Send my Friend to School Project 2013

We have made ideal teachers as part of the Send my Friend to School Project. We want to be part of the campaign to highlight the massive global teacher shortage of 1.7 million teachers which are needed in classrooms worldwide. 60 million children are missing out on education, sometimes because of the lack of teachers.

At Oakwood Junior School we support every child’s right to go to school to gain an education. We have posted our ideal teachers to our local MP, Dr Alan Whitehead for him to pass them on to the Prime Minister.

Oakwood's World Link Committee should be mentioned for the great job they have done promoting this project. Well done!

The photos show just a few of our fantastic ideal teachers.

Oakhouse (Friday)

Oakhouse week ended with a fun packed day! The day involved a music session with Mr Orton, an ex pupil at Oakwood Junior School. The children created their own music track using his professional music equipment, this included them mixing: bass, drum, guitar, keyboard and vocals on a launch pad. The children then named and recorded their group tracks: Catch the Flame, Rock Out, Electro Beat and Power Jam.

Mr Orton, then finished the session with a demonstration of his tracks that he is using for his record label. The children also enjoyed playing board games and the afternoon ended with a relaxing DVD.

A great week has been had by all the children and staff during Oakhouse week. We are all looking forward to the return of the Knapp House children and sharing the fun we have had!

Oakhouse (Wednesday)

In the morning, in preparation for our Oakhouse afternoon picnic, we made wraps and fairy cakes. As well as this, we enjoyed some fun drama activities: Guess the Celebrity; 1,2,3; Sheet Game; The Feather Game and Who Moved?

In the afternoon, we had a "friendly" rounders match: Miss Kilburn's and Miss Patchett's team. To the delight of Miss Kilburn, her team won eight and a half to four and a half rounders. The afternoon ended with a delicious picnic.

Knapp House 2013

It's been a fun packed 2 days so far at Knapp House. The children have thrown themselves into every activity with gusto and have already impressed the adults here with their politeness and helpfulness. We have taken loads of photos and videos but unfortunately the internet connection here is extremely limited-it had taken all day to upload the photos so far. We will keep trying but for now enjoy the pictures of everyone surfing!

Quick Knapp Update

Oakwood reporting from Sandpiper Road...

All is well in sleepy, sunny Devon...

The coach arrived safely at lunchtime yesterday and everyone had a peaceful night's sleep!

There are no pictures or blogging yet, as the internet isn't working at Knapp - we hope for something later today. If they can't access the web from the south west, we'll make sure we post a brief update every day so you know what's going on...

Canoe drill this afternoon, ready for the lake tomorrow!

Southampton City Primary Athletics Championships 2013

Despite the horrendous British weather the Oakwood Athletics team took part in the annual Southampton City Primary Athletics Championships at the Southampton Outdoor sports centre yesterday.

The children, teachers and a few brave parents endured the rain and wind to finish with Oakwood's best finish for a number of years. Last year, after several years of not competing Oakwood finished 10th with 25 points. This year the children have been training hard in PE lessons and in Athletics club and both the boys and girls team finished 3rd in their competitions, combining to give Oakwood a 4th place finish overall with a total of 79 points.

A huge well done to all 25 members of the team you did Oakwood proud. But special mention must go to Robbie, who became a City champion, for winning our only Gold medal.

If you would like to see the results in more detail come and have a look at our display in the Y5/6 shared area.

Year 5 become Pharaohs for the day!

Year 5 had a super day on Friday - they became Pharaohs for the day! We enjoyed lots of different activities to launch our new (and final!) Year 5 topic. These included:

- Using Google Earth on the iPads to locate Egypt and some of the country's famous landmarks.
- Making Egyptian flat bread.
- Creating an Egyptian Pharaoh collar.
- Making a Pharaoh's headdress (including one for Oscar).
- Having an Egyptian feast.
- Competing in a 'best mummy dance' competition!

We sent the children home 'walking like Egyptians' in their new Pharaoh accessories. Well done for a fantastic day, Year 5!

Showbiz Comes to Thursday Evening!

A little bit of showbiz was sprinkled onto Thursday evening, as the Songsters put on their show Oakwood at the Musicals!

They sang their hearts out as they took us on a musical journey through Annie, The Sound of Music, Hairspray, Oliver, My Fair Lady, Bugsy Malone and many more.

Oakwood's Songsters have become famous for their hard work and professionalism and this performance was no exception! The audience agreed wholeheartedly!

Big thanks to Miss Patchett, Mrs Larder and Mrs Vaudin for all the rehearsals!

Green Cross Code

Ellie and Sam say:

We made this video beacause the Travel Committee wants everyone to learn the Green Cross Code. If you learn your Green Cross Code off by heart, you win a special Strider Badge!

We have put a link to the Green Cross Code here so that you can print it out and learn it whenever you want!

Repairs to our Play Trail

Thanks to the hard work of the team from Southampton City Council, we've had three of the upright poles replaced on our playtrail today!

They've also done a general service of the whole climbing frame to make sure that it stays safe for everyone who uses it...

As you can see, a few of the poles were getting quite rotten underground, but we have it surveyed ever year so that we can spot problems before they become dangerous.

As soon as the concrete which holds the poles up has dried, we can let everyone back on...!
