Year 1 - Food Journey

Today was our Whole School Geography Day. The theme was 'Let's Make a Difference'. We were thinking about how we could help the planet. Year 1 learned about the 'Food Journey'. We looked at how far food has to travel to get to the UK from other countries and what types of waste this caused.

Walk like an Egyptian!!

What a great hook day Year 5 had last week, learning all about 'The Egyptians'. Food was tried and mummies made out of toilet rolls!! Lots of fun was had and new things learned too!

Federation Sports Day

Oakwood sent 24 children from years 2,4 and 6 to Fairisle Junior School this morning to take part in the Lordshill and Federation Sports Day.

The children compete against other children, of the same age, from other Federation Schools in a range of different sporting events. The children did Oakwood proud and competed with determination and thoroughly enjoyed their morning.

They also finished in 1st place!!!

Well done Tam Oakwood.

Geography Day and our visitor.

Year R were really lucky today to have a scientist visit us. Rachael Shuttleworth is a geologist and taught us all about global warming and its effects.

We were really surprised to learn how much CO2 is warming up our Earth, but really pleased to know that there are things we can do to help our planet.

We did an experiment using hot lamps to heat up bottles of CO2 and air to see which one got the hottest. CO2 was definitely the hottest and this is like the sun warming up Earth.

We are going to make sure from now on that we turn lights off, walk instead of take the car and try and recycle our rubbish instead of creating litter!

Science in Year R

We had a great time testing and experimenting to see what happens when we mix vinegar and bicarb together! We were very surprised to see how they reacted! We tried it with water instead of vinegar and nothing happened!

Year 3 Flip Books

To start off our unit on animation (inspired by the film making in Hugo Cabret) Year 3 had a go at making flip books. Take a look:-

Knapp House Day 3

It's been another terrifically busy day in Devon.

The children have unanimously voted surfing as their favourite activity of the week so far and most want to go again! We have also completed the low ropes/assault course or climbing and abseiling as well as canoe drill training and problem solving/team activities.

It's our busiest day of the week tomorrow with canoe lake in the morning and coastal walk in the afternoon and disco in the evening so we need our sleep tonight!

Fun at Oakhouse

The first few days of Oakhouse have been great fun! Check out all that we have been up to!

Knapp House Day 2

It's been a day of changeable weather in North Devon today. We've had our fair amount of sunshine, as well as some light showers and plenty of cloud but nothing has been able to dampen the spirit and adventurous attitude of our children. Lots of children have done something they said they wouldn't be able to do or giving something a go that they were scared of and they have  loved every minute of it!

Today started with crabbing at Appledore quay and a rib ride up the estuary (as well as an ice cream) before the walk back to Knapp. After a brief rest for lunch it was tree hoist, Jacobs ladder and tree traverse or crate stacking and tunneling. Dinner was Jacket potato, chilli (veg and meat), salad and veg. The evening activity was pedal carts which we shared with our new friends from Fryern School!

Lights have been out for a while and there are lots of tired children already asleep, but there are still a few night owls enjoying sharing a room with their friends!

Knapp House Day 1

Good Evening from Devon!

The weather hasn't been great down here, but no rain yet - just a little windy! But we have managed to pack a lot into the first day. Depending on which group children are in they have either completed the Assault/low ropes course and Ringos or Climbing and abseil tower and ringos.

Dinner was pasta bolognese, Ratatouille or something else I can't remember just now with chips, veg, salad and dessert.

The children are starting to think about bed now but the site is alive with the sound of first night away from home delight (shouting and laughing).

We try and get pictures from as many people as possible, but sorry if we don't get your child each day. Rest assured though, everyone has had a great day and is looking forward to tomorrow.

OSA Summer Fete!

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who planned, prepared, helped, came along, spent money, had a burger or an ice cream, played a game, had a flutter on a raffle, picked a tombola ticket, sang, danced, won a coconut, golfed, kicked a goal, nerfed a target, had their nails or face painted, designed a mask, had a cuppa and a cake, climbed or jumped over obstacles, or, in Ms Patchett's case, got gunged!

The OSA Summer Fete was a massive success and a lovely community event - a wonderful day for the Oakwood Family!

Thank you!

City Athletics Championships

Team Oakwood went to the Outdoor Sports Centre on Tuesday to take part in the annual City Athletics Championships. 20 schools competed in the all day event, with some of the best athletes in the City competing.

Team Oakwood performed well and picked up some excellent results. The boys team picked up 15 points -enough for 9th place. Whilst the girls team earned 30 points (just 2 points shy of coming 2nd) for 4th place.

A combined Team Oakwood 45 points was enough for 6th place! Another solid performance at the City Athletics against some much bigger Southampton schools.

Well done to all our competitors but special mentions to our new City Champions  - Edward, Sunny-Rose and Praise.

They won a Silver award for the Waste Free Lunch Competition. They only had 9.4g of waste per person. The children represented Oakwood very well and the staff at Testwood said they were amazing!

Astrodome Visit at Oakwood!

Y6 open for business

Y6 have been hard at work on their Make 5 Grow enterprise project.

They worked hard on their business plans, pitched for their investment and have placed and received their first orders of goods. This mean that from tomorrow (Wednesday 6th June 2018) they will be open for business.

The 13 small businesses will be selling a wide variety of products at lunchtime and after school for the next 4 weeks on selected days.

Children are invited to bring in any pocket money to buy products. Happy Shopping!
