Year 1 have been learning about windmills from the pat and present, including what purpose they had here in the UK throughout the years. We then met ‘Mr Tiddles’, a mouse who was looking to have a windmill designed and built to live in. We listened to his ‘preferences’ and then set about designing the 2D ‘nets’ which would later become the ‘structures’ and ‘turbines’. After assembling our structures we then punctured holes and began to assemble the ‘sails’ of the turbine by connecting them to the ‘axle’. Finally, it was time to test them and evaluate them!

After a few weeks they turned into butterflies and today we were able to release Julie, Julia, Juliette, Julian and Julius Caesar into the wild.

While they were there they had a minibeast hunt in the woodland, looked at what they found under microscopes, swept nets through the long grass to find other creatures. They also had a seashore scavenger hunt and safari which included creating some beach art.
After lunch the children had the opportunity to explore the sensory garden and had a play on the park. Lots of fun was had!

1. First we learned about ways to attach fabric together, such as stapling or safety pinning. We assessed the advantages and disadvantages to each and decided to use staples for our puppets.
2. We designed the puppets by labelling the parts and embellishments that will make them look like Kings or Queens.
3. Next we assembled our puppets. We used ‘templates’ to cut out our material and attached them together using staples, making sure they are ‘alligned’.
4. We then embellished our puppets by carefully selecting materials and sing our design as a guide.
5. Finally we evaluated our puppets against the design criteria and thought about how we could possibly improve them next time.

Day.Ever.Today we celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was a fun-packed day to say the least! We started off by designing some decorative bunting and preparing flags to bring along to our lunch. We then had a look at our Jubilee art collection which was created by the whole school, it was VERY impressive!! In the KS2 hall we then had a go on the bouncey castles which were great fun! We then carried our lunches and flags outside to sit together as a school when who should arrive…..THE QUEEN! We couldn’t believe it! We waved our flags and sang, ‘God Save the Queen’. Our wonderful day was topped off with a dognut in class and then a disco! Phew! I think we’re all ready for half-term! Today was full of wonderful memories!

2 spent the day learning about two locations. The first was the city of
Southampton. We found out all about the city and we even conducted a traffic
survey outside of school. We found that there were more vehicles during school
drop off times than during the school day.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 21.3pt;"><span style="font-family: "Sassoon Infant Std",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">We
also looked at Jinja in Uganda. We learned that it is the source of the
River Nile. Jinja has many similarities to Southampton, including that they are
both ports and have rivers running through them. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

the afternoon we had a very special visitor on the computer! We had a video
call with a man called Baker who lives in Jinja, Uganda. He answered all of our
questions and told us all about what it is like to live there. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 21.3pt;"><span style="font-family: "Sassoon Infant Std",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">We had a great day!</span></p>

We were lucky enough to see baby Bella, the doll, being Baptised and to learn about how the special water is blessed and then put into the font on the altar. We then put a little bit of water onto Bella's head and helped to perform a real Baptism!
We also had a look at a gown that a baby may wear during their baptism and also the candle that the church gives each baby to keep. We then listened to the story of how Jesus was Baptised by John the Baptist in the River Jordan!

The children were all a bit shocked at how strict the school teacher was (or at least pretended to be) and how little freedom children had back then. The teacher inspected our fingernails, made us stand to attention and even threatened to make us wear a ‘dunce cap’ if we were being silly! We all agreed that we much prefer present schools as children have much more freedom and can enjoy learning! We also had a look around a home that was over 600 years old and noticed how different things were that far back in the past. For example, there was no electricity and so modern household items like washing machines were of course not available. We had a go at doing some laundry by hand and found it to be very hard work! Phew, time for a break! Cue the picnics!
Photos to follow of us pond dipping and bug hunting.

We strated with digital art and creating letter body shapes, then we designed skulls like Damien Hirst, then we moved onto collaging faces. After that we looked at Julian Opie and Edwina Bridgeman's creations and recreated their work.
Take a look and see which human form creation you like the best!

It was so lovely to see the children all dressed up as their favourite characters and so full of joy for reading! We had a lovely afternoon in the library choosing new books, listening to stories and even making up our own stories as a class! Thank-you to all of the adults at home who put so much effort into the costumes today!

We have been leanring to identify features as either 'human' (man-made) or 'physical' (natural) and label accordingly. We really enjoyed going on a walk through the Lordswood area and saw lots of great features that we could later add to our maps!
