Cookery Club Week 1

Wow! We had a fantastic first week at Cookery Club.
The plan is to enjoy cooking a variety of simple yummy meals that can easily be repeated at home.

This week we kept it nice and simple: locating equipment, peeling and cutting safely and teamwork for the clean up.

The children were brilliant and quickly prepared and cooked a British favourite of sausages and mash.

Sadly we discovered we had no proper potato masher, so we ended up with less attractive but equally tasty buttered, slightly mushed boiled potatoes.

The next day Katie's mum said how much Katie enjoyed cooking and eating it all, including the carrots, which is apparently a first. Great news!

Next week is home made nachos and Jamie Oliver's salsa.

September Club of the Month

The new year 3 children had a great welcome to KS2 last week as they experienced their first Club of the Month.

The Y3 children, as well as all the other KS2 children, were put through their Karate Kicks and punches paces (and shouting) by Rachel from Sama Karate.

Rachel holds a Karate session for both KS1 and KS2 every week right here at Oakwood. If your child enjoyed their session then why not drop in to the office to see about booking a place for them to continue the sport of discipline.

KS2 Star Cycling Demo

The Summer Term began with a bang for KS2 yesterday. They were visited by Grant Fielder, 2004 Free Ride Mountain Bike World Champion, who put on a stunt display in an attempt to inspire more children to get on their bike this summer.

Grant will also be running an after school club at Oakwood this Term. 'Star Cycling' builds on basic cycling skills and provides a range of exciting cycle challenges based away from roads. Please see the clubs letter this term for more information.

Junior PCSOs Report for Duty

No criminal within the grounds of Oakwood School was safe on Monday 21st October, as our very own Junior PCSOs were out on patrol. After being issued with radios, and being instructed on how to use them correctly, they were sent out to find suspects known to be lurking in our school grounds.

Markers revealing the names of fictitious criminals were placed at various points. All criminals were successfully located, and after radioing in for further details, our officers celebrated the identification of two shoplifters and even a stolen car. Does anyone recognise the registration - N5 JAP?

City U11 Football Tournament

On Monday eight boys traveled the short distance to the Southampton Solent Wide Lane Sports Ground where they took part in the annual City U11 Football Tournament. As the previous year's U10 winners, Oakwood were one of the hot favourites to pick up the trophy this year too.

Having not conceded a goal and with four wins and a draw, team Oakwood topped the group and progressed to the semi-final where they met a very strong Bartley School. Despite having the better opportunities, it was Bartley who managed to claim a 0-2 win and progress to the final where they would play Fairisle Junior School.

Oakwood's Results were as follows:

Oakwood 3 - 0 Townhill
Oakwood 1 - 0 Charlton
Oakwood 0 - 0 Bitterne CE
Oakwood 2 - 0 Bassett Green
Oakwood 3 - 0 St Marks

Oakwood 0 - 2 Bartley

We were very proud of the entire team and will be celebrating them at school soon, including our goal scores and Man of the Match!

Oakwood's Songsters have become famous for their hard work and professionalism and this performance was no exception! The audience agreed wholeheartedly!

Big thanks to Miss Patchett, Mrs Larder and Mrs Vaudin for all the rehearsals!

ICT Club iPatterns

ICT Club would like to share some of the patterns they created this week...

How did they do it?

  • They took photos using PhotoBooth on the iPads
  • They uploaded the photos to their own Google Drive using their OakwoodLive IDs
  • They went to the PCs and imported the photos into a Google Presentation

See if you can spot Miss Patchett's skirt! It appears more than once!

Apprentice Club: Cinema

We knew it would be tough to beat the £30 profit made by the BC Landline Cookie Company, but the Howlers Cinema was extremely popular. So much so, that it will be running again next Wednesday too!

Our March 'Club of the Month'

March's 'Club of the Month' came to Oakwood in the back of a Van, with a little help from the Solent Sport Partnership run by Solent University.

Friday was Dance mat day! Instead of using one or two dance mats in the front room at home, each class had the opportunity to use the 15 full size portable mats attached to the main screen in the school hall. Where two students from Solent University guided the children through a selection of songs testing their dancing shoes and co-ordination to the max.

Take a look at our pictures and see if you can spot the next Fred Astaire or Diversity Dance Troop member!

Team Oakwood!

It's nearing the end of the football season...

The Oakwood school football team have played twice in recent weeks picking up important 1-0 home victories against Table toppers St Marks Junior School and Hollybrook Junior School.

This means they have now won four out of five league games played and are still in with a chance of challenging St Marks for the league title!

Unfortunately the away match against Fairisle on Friday was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, but the team still has two games after school on Monday against Tanners Brook. We will try our hardest to re-arrange the Fairisle game before the league finishes on the 15th of March.

Introducing our February 'Club of the Month' Southampton Gymnastics Club

Our February club of the month started with a demonstration from a pair of Hampshire champions who are also one of the top gymnastic pairs in the country. Kieran and Frei showed us some of their best moves, which were quite simply astonishing.

Three coaches from Southampton Gymnastics Club; Keri, Karen and Kieran, then spent the day with us at Oakwood Junior School and worked with each of our nine classes - so a huge thank you to them! They shared their vast gymnastic coaching knowledge giving out many hints and tips to all children throughout the day.

Southampton Gymnastics Club is based in its own purpose built gym at Redbridge Community School and operates a large range of gymnastic opportunities for all children from tots to teens through to adults. They even host birthday parties! If your child enjoyed taking part in a their gymnastics session on Monday and would like to have another go, every child was given a free taster session letter (if they have lost this then the school office has a few spare). All you need to do is contact the club to arrange this. Or visit their website.

Introducing our January 'Club of the Month'

Oakwood’s sporting New Year got off to a shouting start with Sama Karake instructor Rachel!
Rachel is already a regular visitor to school but on Tuesday she spent the day giving each class a taster of Karate. She talked to the children about the values of hard work but having fun whilst doing it; she also discussed how Karate teaches virtues such as self discipline and dedication. If that wasn’t enough the children got to hit stuff too!

Rachel brought some of Karate clubs training equipment with her and the children thoroughly enjoyed their controlled ‘hitting drills’ and basic Karate moves.

By 3:20 there was already a number of children joining Karate club after school. If your child enjoyed their session of Karate, with the excellent Rachel, and would like to join and become a black belt themselves, Karate club take place on a Tuesday after school in the school hall. If you would like to join please ask at the school office.

A Paralympian Visits!

Aaron Phipps, a member of the Paralympics GB Wheelchair Rugby Team, visited Oakwood last week.

He told us about his life, how he came to lose his legs and parts of his fingers, and how his determination led him to represent his country at London 2012.

He gave us all a clear message - when unexpected things happen, you can either moan, or you can pick yourself up, get on with life and work hard! No prizes for guessing which he chose to do... If you watch this video of his training, you can see the effort he puts in seven days a week!

Have a look at his website to find out more!
