Oakwood Groundforce Day

On Wednesday we were joined by volunteers from the Ordnance Survey and some willing parent helpers to dig, cut, chop, pull, push, heave, jump away from frogs, sweat and generally work every muscle they have to prepare some of our outdoor areas for the start of something new. We are so thankful to each and everyone of them, without their hard work we would not be where we are now.

Over the next few months classes will develop their areas, spend the money we raised from our Move'athon and our donation from The Barker Mills Foundation. There may even be another Groundforce day! Ask your child about their area for more information.

School Football Team Match Night 6

Team Oakwood played their final league game of the season on Thursday after school as they took on Fairisle Junior School (who have already been crowned league champions).

Fairisle started the better team and took advantage when the ball fell kindly to them after saves by the Oakwood 'keeper.  Oakwood worked well as a team, but Fairisle deserved their 3-0 half time lead. Oakwood began the second half brightly and Sonny scored quickly after intercepting the ball in the Fairisle box. Another chance quickly followed but the post denied Oakwood a second goal. The game stayed 3-1 until the last minute when somehow Fairisle scored directly from a corner.

Goal Scorer - Sonny (1) Man of the Match - Bleu.

Well done to the team for their efforts this season, they finished a respectable 3rd in the league.

Southampton Schools 5-a-side Competition

The girls' football team did very well in the round robin stages of the Indoor 5-a-side competition today.
Six minute match are notoriously difficult to produce your best football in and results can go either way, so it was great to see Team Oakwood perform so well in their 4 games.

Their results were:
Oakwood 5-0 Hollybrook
Oakwood 2-1 St Monica
Oakwood 6-0 Townhill
Oakwood 3-0 Blackfield.

Well done to our scorers: Praise (3), Cailtin (5), Mia (5), Angel (1) and Summer (2) and special mention to our player of the day, Caitlin.

Football Team - City Cup

As runners up last year, Oakwood had a bye through the previous round of the City Cup. This meant that this evening's game was for a place in the quarter finals.

After a delayed start, Oakwood began the match in confident fashion - creating several promising attacks. However, from an Oakwood corner, Mount Pleasant broke and after a mazy run, managed to find the bottom corner of the net. Oakwood pushed but could not find their passing rhythm before half time.

Three changes at half time seemed to jolt Oakwood back to life and the passing started to improve despite some rugged tackles from Mount Pleasant. Oakwood drew level after a neat shot was saved by the Mount Pleasant 'keeper when the rebound was bundled in. Finding a new gear during the final 5 minutes, Oakwood moved the ball quickly and finally made their domination show - scoring 3 more goals before the final whistle blew.

Well done to Player of the Match - Tom - for a fantastic second half performance.
Goal scorers: Tom (1), Sonny (2) & Caitlin (1).

School Football Team Match Night 3

Match night 3 saw Oakwood play two games. The first was against local rivals Fairisle, who have recently won the Hampshire U10 cup.

The game was exciting with plenty of goal mouth action for both teams and some excellent football on display. Fairisle took a 0-1 lead before half time but an Oakwood equaliser, making it 1-1, after the re-start made it a very interesting game. Towards the end of the game Fairisle capitalised on an Oakwood mistake and moved 1-2 ahead and then held strong for the remaining few minutes. Oakwood could count themselves unlucky with the 1-2 defeat.

The second game was also fast paced, but the good football Oakwood had shown during the first game only made fleeting appearances. Although Oakwood were forced to come from behind again, this time Will scoring the equaliser, more mistakes were punished and Foundry Lane condemned Oakwood to a second 1-2 defeat.

Well done to our scorers: Sonny (1) and Will (1), but our clear man of the match was 'Keeper Bradley.

Girls' Football Team represent Southampton

Following their success at the Southampton Girls' 6-a-side Football Tournament two weeks ago, Team Oakwood represented Southampton in the Hampshire round. Nine of the best teams from across Hampshire gathered at Wide Lane for a winner takes all league.

Oakwood got off to a slow start but did pick up some excellent results. With a bit more luck Oakwood would have had an outstanding day, but we are very proud of the team for finishing 3rd! A fantastic achievement.

Results:
Oakwood 0-0 St Mary's
Oakwood 2-0 Castle School
Oakwood 0-1 Grange
Oakwood 1-2 Herne
Oakwood 1-0 Fair Oak
Oakwood 2-1 Newchurch
Oakwood 0-1 Velmead

Well done to our goal scorers: Summer (3), Caitlin (1), Mia (1) and Praise (2). Special mention to our player of the tournament - Praise.

School Football Team Match Night 1

Yesterday was the first first of the football team's new 'Match Nights'. 3 teams gathered at Oakwood for a set of three matches, Oakwood, Tanner Brook and Shirley Junior.

Oakwood played Tanners Brook in the first game. Oakwood created some very good chances, often 1-1 with the 'keeper, but failed to capitalise and were eventually punished by Tanners Brook who took a 0-1 lead. Oakwood continued to create chances but were unable to find the back of the net meaning the final whistle blew with Oakwood losing 0-1.

In their second game, Oakwood were quick off the mark and dominated the opening 10 minutes but their finishing was wayward and they failed to beat the 'keeper from a string of shots. Shirley actually took the lead against the run of play but were unable to sustain it. Will and Sonny scoring to put Oakwood in the lead. After Shirley equalised to make it 2-2, Oakwood finished with a flourish as both Sonny and Leo scored excellent goals making the final score 4-2.

Well done to the scorers, Sonny(2), Will (1) and Leo (1) as well as Man of the Match, on his debut, Sonny.

U11 Wide Lane 6-A-sides

Following the fantastic success of the Girls' team on Friday, the U11 team were keen to do well today. Things did get off to a good start, a 1-0 win over Shirley - Sonny grabbing the important goal. Oakwood battled to a well deserved 1-1 draw in their second game against Bitterne Manor. Unfortunately, successive 0-1 defeats to Ludlow and Hollybrook ended the team's hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals and a final 0-0 draw with Portswood rounded off the results.

Oakwood played well throughout the tournament and things look promising for the team's league campaign which gets underway on Thursday after school.

Well done to our Player of the Day, Josh! And to our two goalscorers: Sonny (1) and Caitlin (1).

Girls 6-a-side Football

This afternoon Team Oakwood took part in the Southampton 6-A-Side Girls football tournament at Wide Lane.

The 8 girls performed magnificently in their eight matches, scoring 31 goals and conceding only 1!

During their group games Oakwood played some excellent football and scored some amazing goals in their 6 games.
Oakwood 5-0 Foundry Lane
Oakwood 5-0 Bassett Green A
Oakwood 7-0 Bassett Green B
Oakwood 1-0 Abbotswood
Oakwood 2-1 Foxhills
Oakwood 6-0 Townhill

Oakwood were just as dominant during the semi-final against Springhill, winning 4-0. Meaning Oakwood progressed to the final in high spirits.

The final was to be played against Bartley, who had also progressed to the final with a 4-0 win in the other semi-final. The Oakwood defence ensured they kept the Bartley attackers at bay with a disciplined display and the midfield battled for every tackle. After 10 minutes the game was still 0-0 and extra time was needed. Then, following a fantastic run by defender, Angel, and a smart one-two on the edge of the box, Angel slotted the ball into the bottom corner - Oakwood taking a 1-0 lead. Oakwood held their nerve for the final minute and were victorious!

City Champions!

Well done to all the players. It was impossible to pick a player of the day so well done to the whole team! Goal scorers: Mia (7), Praise (7), Caitlin (7), Summer (7) and Angel (2).

U10 Wide Lane Football Tournament

The school football season got underway on Monday with the yearly U10 Wide Lane tournament.

Oakwood were drawn in group 'C' which meant they had 6 games to play during the group stages.
Things got off to a solid start with a 0-0 draw against Sholing which was then followed by a 3-0 win over St Mary's. Unfortunately two 0-2 losses and a 0-3 defeat to Bitterne Park, Calmore and Foxhills respectively meant the final 0-0 draw with Townhill was in vain as Oakwood were unable to qualify as group winners or runners up.

Well done to all the players, but special mention to player of the day - Dylan. Goalscorers Vinny (2) and Summer (1)

Football Team match night

Following their City Cup Semi-Final win on Monday, the school football team were back in action yesterday as they took part in a double match night with Holy Family and Fairisle.

Oakwood played Holy Family first and started the game positively, putting together some good attacking moves and looking organised in defence. A very good, long range strike from Holy Family drew an excellent save from Tom, the Oakwood 'Keeper, but he could only push to ball to the Holy Family striker who scored from the rebound.
A deflected header and a long range free-kick put Holy Family 3-0 up in the second half and it was tough to take for the Oakwood players. The team continued to try, but the final whistle went and the 3-0 score still stood.

After a quick break, Oakwood were back on the pitch against Fairisle. The quality of football on show dipped as a large number of fouls disrupted the flow of the game and Oakwood struggled to concentrate on their passing game. Fairisle snatched a 1-0 lead and faught hard to protect it. The game finished 1-0.

Well done to all the players on what was a disappointing night for results.

When Oakstead went to the woods today...

Today has been another busy day at Oakstead. This morning we headed into the woods for a muddy walk. On our way we collected natural resources for our afternoon activity. We made it back in time to catch up with what our friends are getting up to down at Minstead. In the afternoon we were set a challenge to use the things we had created on our walk and turn them into an animal scene, inspired by the animals we had seen at Marwell. Another busy day: 1 more day to go!
