In RE we have learned how a Candle is used as a symbol. The children were asked to do a Home Learning Project about Fire and they have produced some amazing work!

Year R- Jungle topic Week 1

This was the first week of our new ‘Jungle’ topic. We’ve enjoyed making parrots using paint, glue and tissue paper. We also made our very own binoculars to use for jungle exploring! There has been lots of den-making again this week using various materials and methods. It was so much fun to pretend that we were camping out in the jungle! It has been lovely to see so many children enthusiastic to write about our new topic! In other news, we had to say ‘good-bye’ to our butterflies, who emerged from their cocoons over the weekend. They’ll be fluttering around the school area so no doubt you may see one of the one day soon!

Year R-The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We've been very busy this week learning about the story, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". We've really enjoyed painting symetrical butterfly wings, using our new minibeast cafe and exploring how we can use dance and intruments to retell the story.

Year R Supertato!

This week we have been reading the book, 'Supertato'! We have designed our very own veggie super heroes and have written sentences to describe their super powers. We've also been making our own super hero masks, cooking up some healthy potions for Supertato (to keep his strenth up) and making our own Supertatos to bring home. On Thursday morning we discovered something very suspicious in our classrooms, veggies had been taped to the walls and were trapped! We think the Evil Pea must have snuck in overnight and done this, how rude!

Twisted Tales Recipes

Year 2 have been learning some twisted tales and learned that The Big Bad Wolf wanted to bake something as an apology for his terrible behaviour. So, our home learners have been very creative and created recipes for him to follow and have even been cooking up a storm themselves! Look at how delicious these look! Mrs McInally was even inspired by all the good work at home and baked a little something herself, can you guess which one is hers?

The Lighthouse by Year 3

Year 3 have been working hard on their latest writing journey producing a piece of writing which focused on bringing the setting to life-helping the reader to visualise the scene. We were inspired by this great short film The Lighthouse.  After studying great examples, learning some new writing techniques and vocabulary we produced our final pieces. As it is difficult to share our work at the moment, we decided our audience would be our Oakwood community and with that in mind we will be sharing some of our finished work this week on the blog. We hope you enjoy.

Lordswood Explorers Part 1

3LM had a fabulous local walk today, despite the awful weather.😱

Our Geographers were in small groups, observing and recording man-made and natural features of our local area. We also had a particular focus on identifying things that definitely should not be there.

The children were impeccably behaved, energetic and very enthusiastic. They were also a little damp! But this did not stop them!

They were genuinely shocked at how much litter was around, ruining the aesthetics of the local environment and causing possible danger to animals and humans alike.

We talked about how we could encourage the local community or local council to help reduce rubbish and repair overgrown areas such as Goldcrest pond to encourage wildlife. We also discussed how positive intervention could help globally by recycling the plastic and cans we saw.

At a later date, children will be producing a short persuasive and emotive speech about the litter issue (and other issues) so watch this space!

Wind Poems

Inspired by 'The Sea' by James Reeves, the children in Year 4 wrote, memorised and performed their own poems based on the wind.

Writing Workshare in Year R

In Year R we did our workshare a little differently, it was stay and play time!

We showcased activities that we use to promote writing during the children's own learning, from talk for writing to word building and some of the handwriting jobs that we use to strengthen our hands ready for writing.

Writing Workshare May 2019

Thank you so much to everybody who came this morning to share their child's writing journey and see how they can continue supporting this at home.

Year R: Mr Taylor receives some letters....

Year R received a video message from Mr Taylor requesting information about astronomy! What a coincidence, as we're just wrapping up our topic on 'Outer Space'! Year R were only too happy to write (and decorate) letters for Mr Taylor! They wrote 'memory words' and sounded-out unknown words phonetically. Their teachers were VERY impressed by their fantastic sentence ideas and amazing knowledge of outer space! To finish, they decorated them with pastels and e-mailed him to ask if he could pop by to pick them up! Mr Taylor was very pleased with his letters!

Incredible Instructions Day

Today Year 5 had an exciting Instructions Day to kick start their writing to inform unit this term. They each brought in an item from home that had instructions. They first familiarized themselves with a partners item using the instructions, whilst doing so they identified features of an instruction text and what made instructions good/ bad as a reader. They then had a go at writing a new set of instructions for an item and then had a go at following each others instructions.

We learnt lots about how to make instructions clear and easy to follow, we are now looking forward to applying this to our writing linked to Space throughout the next few weeks.
