Oakwood's Last Night of the Proms

Oakwood Junior School staged a rousing celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this evening with a performance of songs and music fit for The Royal Albert Hall and a Regal Audience!

The songsters were in fine form and gave us some fantastic performances of songs from the Young Voices Concert at the Oand some Proms classics: Jerusalem, Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and, of course, God Save the Queen!

The orchestra accompanied them very professionally under the leadership of Emily from Oasis Academy - we would like to say a huge thank you to her for her hard work!

Have a very relaxing half-term and enjoy the Jubilee Celebrations!

Three cheers for Her Majesty, and for Oakwood!

Summer Fun in Year 6

Reward Time for Year 6.

What an incredibly busy and productive time its been in Year 6-so busy we haven't blogged since December!! So now here we are-S.A.T.s completed-ready to bring you up-to-date on some of the exciting events that have recently been enjoyed by the Year 6 children (and staff)!

Last Tuesday afternoon the children undertook a challenging orienteering activity at Itchen Valley Country Park. The course was completed by all participants and despite blistering heat, two children achieved an amazing finishing time of 13mins and 3 secs.

The very next day we were off for our long awaited visit to the Mayflower Theatre to see 'Oliver'. The children worked so hard to raise money for this event (through their Victorian Fayre and Sponsored Spell) that the excess allowed Year 6 to enjoy an appetizing buffet lunch before setting off. The show exceeded all expectations and will no doubt be remembered for a long time to come.

Year 3 Become Lordswood Explorers

Last week Year 3 had a lovely afternoon (in the sun) exploring their local area. The children had many tasks along the way including looking out for different types of housing and keeping a tally ready for their maths lessons.

A healthy, safe school

In my capacity as governor with a Health and Safety interest, I attended a walk round the school. A group of us does this every term. As a relatively new governor to the school, it was good for me to have a proper look round. We were very thorough and I'm pleased to say that there was nothing very serious to be sorted out. The school is healthy and safe!

Something's Cooking!

At ICT Club, we are learning how to blog. Blogging is where you put things on the internet and it is a bit like a magazine or a diary.

We decided to blog about Cookery Club.

Cookery Club is on Tuesday and starts at 3:15 and ends at 4:00. At the first meeting they were making tortilla chips. They’re cutting peppers, cucumber and carrots. They are having so much fun, the teachers that are running it are Miss Hutchinson and Mrs Whitmarsh. This club is going on in the kitchen of Oakwood Junior School.

We learned how to use the digital cameras to take really good photos of people learning new skills, like cutting with sharp knives and peeling.

We also learned how to use the Easi-Speak microphone to record interviews. We learned how to put sound clips together to make it sound like one interview.

On Your Bike!

Year 5 pupils have been out in all weathers this week - whether it has been blowing a gale or lashing down with rain!

They have been learning to ride their bikes safely on the road. This involves knowing good road sense and keeping all their senses alert to traffic and other dangers.

Matthew Griffin and Nicola Spiers from Bikeability have been very impressed with the children and their new skills!

Here's why it's important to learn good Bike Sense...
