Year 2 Geography Day!

Yesterday, Year 2 spent the day learning about two locations. The first was the city of Southampton. We found out all about the city and we even conducted a traffic survey outside of school. We found that there were more vehicles during school drop off times than during the school day.

We also looked at Jinja in Uganda. We learned that it is the source of the River Nile. Jinja has many similarities to Southampton, including that they are both ports and have rivers running through them.

In the afternoon we had a very special visitor on the computer! We had a video call with a man called Baker who lives in Jinja, Uganda. He answered all of our questions and told us all about what it is like to live there.

We had a great day!

Year 2 DT DAY

Today Year 2 had a really fun DT day. We were given the job to design and make a model of a ferris wheel. First we had to learn all about wheels and axles in order to get our model to work. We really enjoyed thinking about the design criteria, creating our designs and then working as a team to build a model of what our wheel might look like. Do you like our designs and models? All of our wheels worked in the end.

Fiery Silhouettes in Year 2

Year 2 focused on their painting skills this week. We thought about how to comfortably hold our paintbrush, loading the brush with the right amount of paint and painting long flowing strokes across the page. By doing all of this the children created a fiery background which they then added a silhouette of buildings to represent the Great Fire of London.

Elm Class at Testwood Lakes

Year 2 went to Testwood Lakes for their trip. We focused on our map reading skills by helping Speckle the Spider find his belongings that he'd lost in the woods and around the site. We then needed to find as many of Speckle's friends as we could by sweeping the long grass and log turning in the woods. It was a very fun day, evenif it was a bit hot!
