Y6 Victorian Day

Year 6 children stepped back in time today as they experienced a day in a Victorian school (well most of it).

The children went through the daily routine of inspections and health checks; the 3 Rs - Reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic; Drill, playground games and they even had a go at using ink and pen during a calligraphy lessons.

The children's costumes were great and certainly looked the part! But could they keep a straight face? Could they follow instructions without talking? Would they make a mistake and find out how a Victorian teacher sorted out behaviour in their classroom.

Y6 Victorian Day

Y6 were a group of scruffy, unclean, uneducated group of street urchins today...well, most of them...But they had an excuse...Today was Victorian Day!

The children experienced the worst and best of Victorian schooling. From the 3R's to studying the humble potato. From Drill and playground games to Calligraphy and the Dunce's hat.

The children took everything in the best of spirits and had lots to say about their Victorian experience.

Y6 Victorian Fayre

A big THANK YOU to everyone who visited the Y6 Victorian Fayre yesterday afternoon. There were: arts and crafts, toys, games, cakes and even a tea shop (with a mountain of cake).

The children did a great job in running everything and raised a super amount of money!

Victorian Day Year 6

The bell rang and out stepped three scary Victorian teachers with an enormous class of 59 ruffians! We had drills, handwriting, dictation as well as reciting. It truly was a taste of school long ago. This afternoon was finished off with sewing, technical drawing and art. We think the children were glad to get their usual teachers back this afternoon!

Y6 Victorian Day

Year six children got to experience what it would be like to attend a Victorian school this morning. Some found it a a real eye opener and now think themselves very lucky that schools have developed significantly in the last 100-150 years.

There was the 3Rs, handwriting, drill, inspections, arithmetic and dictation. Children were also told about schools expectations and everyday activities such as reciting the Lords prayer and singing hymms and the national anthem.

Children who dressed up for the occasion looked fantastic! So a huge well done to children (and parents) for putting the extra effort in.

This afternoon children have had the option of sewing/embroidery or technical drawing - two very Victorian single sex activities - both of which were enjoyed by all.

Y6 time travelers...visit Milestones

On Tuesday Y6 travelled back in time as they travelled to Milestones museum in Basingstoke.

Children explored everyday life for Victorian people, as well as taking part in a short Victorian school day. (I can still hear the scratching chalk boards now!) One group even went as far as to explore the everyday Victorian clothing, although I'm not sure some of them got the costumes right.

Armed with this new knowledge Y6 will now start their Victorian topic in earnest.

Year 2 seaside visitor

Instead of Year 2 visiting the museum, the museum came to us courtesy of St Barbes, Lymington.

Rebecca gave a detailed presentation featuring photographs showing how the seaside has changed since the Victorian times. There are many similarities but there are also lots of differences.

The children had the opportunity to dress up and handle different artifacts; including an old fashioned camera, a penny lick and a metal bucket and a wooden spade. They even got to see a woolen swimming costume!

After seeing old fashioned and original postcards, the children had a go at writing and designing their own postcards.

Thank you to Rebecca and St Barbes museum, we have learned a great deal.

Willow Class Victorians and Spring crafts

This week has been very exciting for Willow class. I was really proud of them for their performance in our first class assembly together. They made some pretty convincing Victorians.
We also spent time creating some rather fantastic Easter bunny hats, flowery garland alternatives and spring pictures or hatching chicks. You may spot an after crafts' and 'after tidy up' picture. I had to take those photos to show what a jolly good job of tidying up they made.

Year 6 Victorian Fayre

After lots of hard work and much preparation, Year 6 held their Victorian Fayre yesterday. Parents, family, friends and fellow pupils visited and enjoyed an afternoon of cakes, crafts, and games.Lots of fun was had by all and lots of money was raised (the exact total is a secret for now-to be revealed to Year 6 very soon).

Year 6 Victorian Fayre Preparations.

Year 6 are busy cooking, making, designing and researching as preparations for our Victorian Fayre this Friday get underway. All manner of amazing (and affordable) gifts are being created and some delicious, appetizing treats lovingly prepared ready to share with our Year 6 parents and friends. It should be a lot of fun!

Blackboard, Easel and Dunce's Cap - A Day in a Victorian School

Year 6 left their brown uniforms at home today as they took a step back into the Victorian era.
Donning their Victorian clothes and clasping an authentic Victorian penny in their hands, they stood nervously awaiting drill before they were allowed into the building.

Once inside, after a very thorough inspection of hands, shoes and fingernails, they were instructed in the 3Rs.

After a brief lunch (not gruel) the children got to write with real nibs, ink and blotting paper, worked together to produce a portrait of Queen Victoria and worked on their needlework skills.

A Step Back in Time

The summer break is always a good time to catch up with a few jobs...

Our outgoing Year 6 ICT gurus, Jack and Ryan, scanned a lot of old photos which we found in a dusty cupboard. This is the first time we've had to make them public!

Year 6's visit to Milestones Museum

On the 22nd of November 2012, Year 6 visited Milestones Museum in Basingstoke. We had a fantastic time walking through Victorian London streets and visiting shops and homes. Steam trains and antique cars were among the marvelous things we saw. Many people visited the 1940's sweet shop for their ration of the sugary treats. They were meant to last us the whole week, but most of them were gone in minutes!We also had a school session with a Victorian teacher where we used slates and slate pencils.

There were so many other extraordinary things that happened that day and (just to prove it) here are some pictures from that fabulous day!

Year 6 Victorian Day

On the 15th of November 2012, Year 6 took a step back in time as they experienced a vile Victorian school day. They were under very strict instructions: hands on desks at all times; only speak when you are spoken to. Break these rules, and you could end up in the corner, wearing the Dunce Hat! The teachers were very strict and for those who they shouted at, it wasn't very amusing!

But we won't tell every thing that happened! You can find out for yourself with these pictures.
