St Margaret's Church- Year 2 Visit

Year 2 have been learning all about superheroes. This week we have started learning about real life superheroes, including Florence Nightingale.

On Tuesday this week, ten children from Year 2 visited St Margaret's Church in Wellow. They went to see where Florence Nightingale was buried.

They had a brilliant time finding out lots of interesting facts about Florence Nightingale's life and the church in which she is buried.

Did you know Florence Nightingale wished that only her initials F.N were on her grave stone?

Did you know St Margaret's Church is 804 years old?

It would be a great place to visit in half term!

5FL Street Dance

5FL have been really enjoying our 'Street dance' unit this half term. This week the children have been working on choreographing their own routines from moves we learned together, also making sure they have a starting and finishing position. I will keep the blog updated with their progress.

First Aid Week at Oakwood

Wow what a fantastic week!

In July 2018, the government published proposals for all school children in England to be given training in first aid and life-saving skills. As we often are, Oakwood Primary is ahead of the game!

Meon Valley HeartStart offer life-saving training for free. We were lucky enough to be able to train with them this week in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6. Mr. Wills said it was really good clear training and much better than previous training he had taken part in.

You can see in pictures that they all seemed to enjoy the training.  They learned about how to deal with making that life saving call, choking, serious bleeding, how to put someone in the recovery position and CPR.

You can look at what was offered here: https://www.heartstartmeonvalley.co.uk/schools

Meon Valley Heartstart are affiliated to the British Heart Foundation Heartstart initiative. As a thank you we managed to raise around £50 for the charity. Its not too late to donate if you wish either. Just check out the website above.

Do you know what DR ABCD means? Please ask you children.

3D Shapes in Year R

This week we have learned all about 3D shapes. We have been on 3D shape hunts, played guess my shape and built rockets with them.
We can now talk about the names of cones, cylinders, cubes, cuboids and spheres and have begun to look at their properties such as faces and edges.

What's it like to be an astronaut?

This week in Year 5 we kicked off our Space based topic 'Up, Up and Away' with a hook day and eating of 'Space food'. Mr Crook came in to lead an astronaut fitness session as well. The children learned all about being an astronaut and what space food (made by NASA) actually tastes like.

Year 2 Superhero Day

To introduce our new 'Superhero' topic, Year 2 spent the day all dressed up as their favourite superhero. We showed these off on our catwalk runway and danced to Superman.

The children then enjoyed more superhero themed activities, including making their own marshmellow superheroes.

In the afternoon, each child struck a pose over our superhero display, flying through the sky.

Which is your favourite superhero and why?

Year 4 have an egg-cellent time!

This week Year 4 have been busy experimenting, using different solids and liquids to try and protect an egg whilst being dropped from a height. We discovered that some materials work much better than others at protecting our precious eggs!
