Y4 Greek Pavillions

In Year 4, we had fun designing our own Wonders of the World. First we used sweets and cocktail sticks to see what shapes were strong and stable enough to stand up. Then we had a go planning our own structure made from lollipops, built to honour one of the Greek gods.

Year 5 Board 'The Titanic'

Year 5 had a brilliant day before half term celebrating their fantastic topic of 'The Titanic'.

Buoyancy? What's it all about?

As part of our Titanic hook day, Year 5 spent the afternoon invetigating 'Buoyancy' and 'water displacement'. The children learned all about 'Archimedes' and how the Titanic (which weighs about 50,000 tonnes) actually stays afloat.

What's it like to be an astronaut?

This week in Year 5 we kicked off our Space based topic 'Up, Up and Away' with a hook day and eating of 'Space food'. Mr Crook came in to lead an astronaut fitness session as well. The children learned all about being an astronaut and what space food (made by NASA) actually tastes like.

Year 2 Superhero Day

To introduce our new 'Superhero' topic, Year 2 spent the day all dressed up as their favourite superhero. We showed these off on our catwalk runway and danced to Superman.

The children then enjoyed more superhero themed activities, including making their own marshmellow superheroes.

In the afternoon, each child struck a pose over our superhero display, flying through the sky.

Y4 Roman Day

Today we celebrate 400 years of the Roman Empire in Britain. Our Soldiers completed a final march, our chefs prepared a lavish feast and our artisans designed a marvelous mosaic floor. However, change is coming, as worrying rumours of attacks on Rome suggest that these may be the final days of Imperial control of Britain!

Year 5 had a Boatiful Day!

Year 5 had a fabulous hook day today, with all activities based upon their new topic - Iceberg Ahead! The children produced some lovely artwork using charcoal and watercolours. They had a go at making a raft only using twigs and string, then the children made some energy building, healthy cereal bars. These being linked to what makes a good snack whist out on a sailing trip for the day. Have a look at our photos below.

Y4 Mexico Day

To kick start our week learning all about Mexico, Year 4 have had a Mexico hook day. We spent the morning preparing food for our afternoon fiesta. Whilst some of us were cooking, we learnt about Curiot (a Mexican street artist) and created our own creatures based on his work. During the afternoon we found out all about the modern day Maya people as well as sampling our delicious food!

Superhero Day in Year 2

The children all dressed up for superhero day and did various activities.

They had walked down a "runway" to show off their costumes and had a special superhero photo shoot.

Incredible Instructions Day

Today Year 5 had an exciting Instructions Day to kick start their writing to inform unit this term. They each brought in an item from home that had instructions. They first familiarized themselves with a partners item using the instructions, whilst doing so they identified features of an instruction text and what made instructions good/ bad as a reader. They then had a go at writing a new set of instructions for an item and then had a go at following each others instructions.

We learnt lots about how to make instructions clear and easy to follow, we are now looking forward to applying this to our writing linked to Space throughout the next few weeks.

Y4 Roman Day

On Friday Year 4 had a busy day exploring more about Romans. We started the day off by learning about the Roman invasion. We spent the morning designing shields, cooking up a Roman feasts and designing menus for Oakwood's very own Roman Restaurant. After lunch we ate the food (lying down as the Romans did) we had spent the morning preparing. We even had our very own taste tester, just like Roman Emperors often did, in the form of Mr Taylor who checked our food hadn't been poisoned! Once we had feasted, we then went outside to practice some Roman marching drills using our shields to protect us. What a busy day in the life of a Roman!

Casting off our Titanic topic!

Year 5 have had an action packed day with their Titanic hook day. They started by writing boat related poetry and performing it in an entertaining way to their peers. They then were set the challenge of designing a boat that would float and hold weight. They then put them to the test by putting them on the water. Finally we finished the day with some boat art work.

Year 4 had an absolutely amazing hook day on Friday. Miss Patchett led year 4 in style!!

Year 1 Toy Adventure

To launch our topic "All about Toys" the children were invited to bring in their toys from home for an adventure!

The children enjoyed showing the toys around the classroom. They also played games, explored the playground, had a woodland walk through the leaves and met up with other toy friends.

Year 4 and The Romans

This half term Year 4 have been learning all about the Romans.  From having a Roman Hook Day, to setting up our own museum, dressing up and acting.

Round and round we go!

Before half term and also this week Year 4 have been working around the clock on designing, making, adjusting and completing their fantastic moving carousels. Their Design and Technology unit has all been part of our Circus based topic 'Roll up Roll up'. Which has also included story writing based on the story 'Leon and The Place Between'. Alot of Science learning prior to the carousels had to be done. From safety to circuit building and testing. It has been an electrifying experience!

Year 4 Oh What A Circus!

Today, the circus rolled into Year 4 with clowns, acrobats, lion tamers, strong  men and even some circus animals arriving to entertain their audience in the ring.  We learned about the history of the circus and then had a debate about the use of animals within a circus.  Finally, the afternoon was spent miming and performing their circus acts to each other.  We certainly have got some fantastic clowns in Year 4.

Year 1's African Adventure

This half term, Year 1 have been comparing their local area with Kenya in Africa. They have made comparisons between the different countries including the houses, animals, food, schools, climate and seasons.

The children were very excited when they had the opportunity to go on a virtual African adventure to immerse themselves in African culture. They had the chance to find different animals through their binoculars on safari, hear the various noises that the animals make, see a traditional African dance and even play some African drums.

Once they had returned, the children wrote letters to friends and family telling them all about their amazing adventure.

Who stole the porridge?

The children in Year 1 have got their work cut out after discovering their role play area in such a mess!

However clues had been left such as spilled porridge, a necklace with a "G" on it, a black cloak, red ribbons and a messy bed! Who could have done this?

The children have began to investigate; writing check lists, discussing who this could be with each other as well as searching elsewhere for further clues and escape routes.

It was requested by the children to view CCTV footage to help and have launched our next topic...
