Y5 Bikeability

Year 5 have had a busy week this week: alongside preparing for their Jude's business pitches for Jude's visit next week they have been busy taking part in bikeability training. The children have been learning how to safely ride a bike- including many children learning how to be safe on the roads when cycling. Thanks to the bikeability team for some great training!

The Big Pedal

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Big Pedal this year. We had a huge number of children involved. Hopefully, they will continue to enjoy coming to school in an active way.

KS2 Star Cycling Demo

The Summer Term began with a bang for KS2 yesterday. They were visited by Grant Fielder, 2004 Free Ride Mountain Bike World Champion, who put on a stunt display in an attempt to inspire more children to get on their bike this summer.

Grant will also be running an after school club at Oakwood this Term. 'Star Cycling' builds on basic cycling skills and provides a range of exciting cycle challenges based away from roads. Please see the clubs letter this term for more information.

The Big Pedal

A huge thank-you to all the parents that made The Big Pedal such a success. The bike-shelter, and the railings nearby, were jam-packed with bikes and scooters.

177 children rode to school on bikes or scooters, and an incredible 300 of our 416 children came to school without a car!

Overall, the winning classes were Cedar Class in Key Stage 1 and 3BK in Key Stage 2. They will be the first recipients of our new class travel prizes: Suzie the Travel Bear (for KS1) and the Class Travel Trophy (KS2). Congratulations!

2014 Susie and The Travel Trophy

We'd love to see the bike shelter that busy every day. If you would like to equip your child with the safety skills they need to make the trip themselves, keep an eye out for free bike safety training in May.

Here is a taste of what happened:

Bike It!

Every member of Year 5 has had the chance to get on their bike over the past fortnight as Alan and Steve from Bikeability joined us to see them safely through the programme.

Sometimes, they were a little hard to find as they ventured out to Woburn Road, round the loop of Sandpiper Road and back again.

It's very important that every child at Oakwood has a good understanding of road safety and can get around safely, whether that's as a cyclist or a pedestrian!

Thanks to Alan and Steve! We'll see you again next year!
