Reading Dens in Y2

For World Book Day Year 2 created "Reading Dens" to enjoy with their friends and soft toys.

After reading "The Book with No Pictures" the children then designed their own page in the style of the author.

Foot Squishingly Good Wednesday at Minstead!

Today we were joined by Mr Crook for a ice cold, foot numbing, body bouncing march across one of amazing boglands in the New Forest. Those of us who were brave enough to walk across the boglands with no boots (and that did not include Mr Crook!) yelped our way to the middle where we shown how incredibly deep the marsh was. We rounded off a terrific day with homemade sausages, a lantern parade and stargazing. We were also visited by Miss K who brought some Oakwood cheer to our hot chocolate session.

Ancient Architects set to work!

In Year 5 we have been learning about how the Egyptians built the pyramids. To apply our learning and put our maths to the test our teachers presented us with a challenge, to build the Pyramids of Giza, using sugar cubes.

The challenge began with some mathematical calculations. We were told how many boxes of sugar cubes our teachers had bought, we then had to work out how many sugar cubes were in each box, how many there were in total across the year group, then how many each group could have. Then before we could get to work we had to calculate the dimensions of our pyramids and how many bricks we would need for each one.

Having worked hard on the planning process, we set to work on building them. Keep your eye out for future blogs showing our pyramids being made part of our 3D Egyptian lands.

Poetry share

In Year 5 we have been enjoying reading poetry, both at school and at home!

As part of this our homework was to find and present a poem or to write our own poem. We then shared these with our friends and some of us read them aloud to the rest of the class. Here our some photos of us enjoying each others poetry.

Last week to kick off our brand new business topic Jude's Ice - Cream challenge year 5 had a go at really fun team building challenge. This gave them a chance in their new teams to work as a team and find their strengths and weaknesses. The challenge was to make the longest paper chain only using: one piece of A3 card, glue and scissors.

Oakstead went down to the woods today!

As part of Oakstead week, we had a great morning out on a local walk to Lordswood woods to explore and collect natural resources to contribute towards the decoration of our willow weaved frames we made on Monday.

As you can see by our footwear in the photos we came across a few muddy puddles!

Year 1 Marvellous Maths Investigations

On the week commencing 26th January, Year 1 took part in four exciting maths investigations.

They had to apply their skills of counting, reasoning and group discussion. The main focus was to persevere and innovate. We were very impressed with how they recognised where they had not followed patterns and kept going until they succeeded.

You can see that they were so excited, Willow class chose to continue with their investigations during snack time.

What a fantastic maths week!

Let's Go!

Oakwood would like to say a really big Well Done and Thank You to everyone at Testlands Multisports Coaching (TMC)!

To our pupils, they are the best sports coaches in the world; to our staff they are valued colleagues (and some ex-pupils!)

In the summer, they undertook a charity bike ride from Lordshill to Paris, raising money for their charity, the Testlands Support Project.

We were very proud to be invited to the World Première of Let's Go - the film they made about the experience.

Have a look at the trailer here:

TSP helped us financially to complete the fencing for our basketball playground. We are very proud of them!

Thanks Luke and the team!

Titanic Day - Year 5

In the morning we designed our own passports and tickets in preparation for our journey.

We then lined up to have our tickets and passports checked and stamped before climbing aboard the Oakwood Titanic.

We celebrated our departure from Southampton with dancing (the Irish Jig and the Waltz) and then ate the scones we baked the day before.

As we crossed the Atlantic our celebrations were interrupted with an unexpected bump in the night. After reenacting the scene, the fate of the passengers was revealed. Each pupil has been writing as a Titanic passenger from 1912, for this half term.

Interhouse Assault Course Competition

The whole school took part in an Interhouse assault course competition a few weeks ago. All classes competed for their house to get around in the quickest time. Bonus time deductions were given for team effort and sportsmanship. Thank you to our amazing house captains for organising it!

Postal Delivery Arrives!

This week Year 3 recieved their replies from the children they wrote to in Nottingham.

Everyone was really excited to see what their letter said and learn about the topics they have been learning about at Robert Mellors (London and how to filter dirty water).

We read our replies and shared them with each other then as our Big Write on Friday we wrote a reply.

Everyone really enjoyed this writing activity!

Oakie in New Zealand!

Hello! This is my very first blog post and it's from New Zealand!

I'm on the other side of the world after 24 hours on several aeroplanes. (That's a long time for a bear!) You can see me looking at the aeroplane map when we were over the Indian Ocean.

I've been to lots of places already, but my favourite is Hanmer Springs, where you can have a hot thermal bath and a hot chocolate!

Here's my journey! Have a zoom into New Zealand to see where I've been!

Making the Link!

Look what's happening...

Over the Easter break, we're pulling apart Green Base and putting it back together again in a different order...!

We'll have a brand new primary library for the whole school, and a new corridor which will help us get from one building to the other more easily.

Thanks Daryl at Tynwood for all your hard work while we are away!

Minstead: The Video (PG*)

(* Contains scenes of mild mud....)

After much hard work in the editing suite, Minstead: The Video (2014) is now available.

It stars Years 4 and 5 and is set in the glorious surroundings of the New Forest.

Although it was too late for the Oscars this year, we know you will enjoy it!

Oakwood Primary School - Official Opening!

Today was our Official Opening Day!

Even though we became Oakwood Primary School at midnight on 1 January, and our first day with children was 7 January, it's been the first sunny day for our special event!

Everyone, children and adults, released an Oakwood Primary School balloon to celebrate the new school. (Every balloon has a tag, so we'll wait to see which one travels the furthest! Look at a map of finds!)

We also got our youngest and oldest pupils and staff members to cut a commemorative ribbon on our new sign.

A big thank you to everyone who helped decorate and blow up balloons, and to Sainsbury's Lordshill, who donated some new books for our library!

Some of the pictures will be in the Daily Echo on Friday 10 January.

Friendship Week!

This week has been 'Friendship Week'!

At Key Stage 1 we began the week with one of our favourite stories, "Rainbow Fish". Just like the main character in the story, we gave away (pretend) sparkly fish scales to people who were good friends.

We learned that in order to have good friends you need to be one. Our new 'Playground Helpers' were introduced to the school. They will be outside every play-time from now on and will be wearing bright orange bibs.

They will be leading a special game every day that everyone can join! This helps us to make new friends across the school and make sure nobody is lonely. On Wednesday afternoon we met in our House Teams and had 'Play-Clap-Sing' out in the playground. What fun!

All week we have been nominating friends in our classes for our 'Friendship Wall' and giving them special stickers. We competed in our House Teams to see who could work together the best to win the most points. Our challenge was to run up the ladder, go under the arch, grab a beanbag and then race back to our team.

Our teammates cheered each other on! To celebrate the Tawny Owls winning, they had a special picnic in the hall and played some games with Miss Shore. Next week, to follow-on, we will be learning about bullying and learning how we can prevent it from happening in our school and what to do if you need help.
