Elm Class Coding
This half term, Year 2 have began their coding journey. They have completed Level 1! They have learned how to give the computer instructions to make objects move around the screen and how to add 'start events' and 'click events'. This means some objects will start to move automatically when they run the program or they will move or disappear when they are clicked on. The children also learned how to change the scene and the objects they wanted to use. It's safe to say, they have really enjoyed learning how to code.

Year 1 Beebots
Year 1 this half term have been looking at coding and algorithms. We have used an app on our ipads and beebots to give instructions on how they should move. It was a great activity and we will be setting obstacle courses for the beebots next term!

Y1 Apple Field Trip
Year 1 had the opportunity to go and experience a coding workshop at Apple Southampton in WestQuay. The children worked with two members of staff to control and move the Sphero robots. The children learnt how to drive the robots using controls and program them to follow a particular route and maze pattern. We had a fantastic time and learnt lots of new coding skills.

Jude's den
Forget the dragon's den, this afternoon Year 5 have been putting all their hard work into action and have pitched their ice cream businesses to Jude and Aiden (from Jude's ice cream). Year 5 worked in groups of 4 or 5. They had to: design the product; undertake market research and create a market research report; design a logo and packaging; research charities to donate the profits to and create a persuasive charity speech; create a board to inform Jude all about their business; create a presentation and finally pitch all of this to Jude and Aiden. It was a tough decision to decide between the groups (the teachers are glad they didn't have to decide) but the winners of the Oakwood Jude's challenge 2017 are.... Summer Delight!

Learning about Time in Year 1
The children in Year 1 have been learning to tell the time.
First of all they found out what they could do in 1 minute. Completing activities such as:
* How many beads they could thread,
* How many pegs they could put in a board,
* How many times they could write their name,
* How many pieces of multilink could be fitted together
* How many numbers they could write down.
Some were quite surprised by the results.
The children have also explored time practically through puzzles, computer games and using clock faces. Many children are now feeling confident to recognise O'clock and half past.

Year 6 English
Some of our Year 6 children had a fantastic time this morning discovering the 'virtual classroom' on ICT. They managed to log in, watch a short film and complete a task - all on ICT! We are all very happy that our POSITIVE mindset has enabled us to do new things!

Year 2 Computing
This term in computing, Year 2 have been learning about coding.
The children have designed programs to instruct a character to do different things.
They have really enjoyed this and grasped it very easily.
Maybe we are seeing some budding computer programmers?!

Coding at Oakwood!
We are getting into coding at Oakwood, which means the teachers have to learn first...!
Here's a quick game one of our teachers made today using Espresso Coding... When you click a balloon, a new one appears. Which colour gives you the most points? Which colour balloon takes points away?!
You've only got 30 seconds!
