Launch of the Attendance Bike Competition
In Assembly today our Federation Attendance Officer and the owner of The Hub cycle shop in Shirley, helped Mr Taylor launch our exciting Attendance Competition.
Every child in Oakwood has the opportunity to win a brand new bicycle, along with a goody bag of safety equipment including a lock, a water bottle and a stylish helmet!
Every Friday, every child with full attendance for that week will be given a raffle ticket to enter the prize draw. The more weeks that they come in on time without missing a day, the more raffle tickets they will be able to enter. The winner's name will be drawn from a tombola at the end of the year.
So keep trying your best to come to school on time, and good luck!

Krypton Factor Federation Maths event
Some of our able mathematicians from year 2 and 3 had the great opportunity of attending our Federation Krypton Factor maths event this week.
Redbridge Primary School hosted. Newlands Primary, Shirley Warren Primary, Mansel Park Primary and Fairisle Junior schools were also represented there.
Our Oakwood pupils were fantastic ambassadors for the school; they enjoyed working alongside the others and persevered with the maths activities, games and puzzles all afternoon.
The first activity was the Numberphile Brussel Sprouts game which they all loved!
Next the children were given time to explore seven different maths activities.
Well done everyone! It was so lovely to see all the children enjoying maths and meeting new friends.

Roving Reporters in Year 6
Our able writers group attended a special two day event at Tanners Brook Primary School: Redbridge and Lordshill Primary Federation newspaper writing workshop. Representatives from other schools in the Federation joined our Oakwood pupils.
It kicked off with a guided workshop run by Rory, one of the Daily Echo editors. The children were then transformed into roving reporters to begin investigating and reporting on a mysterious event. Strange goings on had occurred in the ICT suite - with upturned furniture, silver foil and blue slime!
The following day, the reporters were able to see further photo and video evidence of a blue creature - bizarre! To get the children ready to write, they enjoyed a fun warm up activity which involved writing ideas on paper, scrunching them up and throwing them around the room! They then picked one up and wrote another idea on it. Once we had done this a few times we magpied some of the best phrases - there is a photo of this below!
The children were given time to write their newspaper reports. our reporters represented Oakwood superbly and did some amazing writing. We are very proud of them.
Watch out for the report of Rory's visit to the workshop in the Daily Echo in the next few days and also Oakwood's news articles!

Sam's Half Term Fun!
Well, I'm certainly making the most of my holiday time!
This half term, I was lucky enough to join Bronte and Amelia and their family on a lovely skiing trip in not just one, but three countries in Europe!
Here you will see me enjoying time on the boat from Dover to Dunkirk followed by soaking up the view from St. Michael's Bridge in Ghent, which is in Belgium. I also fitted in time to have a lovely waffle!
Next, I made friends with a street seller who sells 'cuberdon' sweets (or 'little noses'), I am on a boat trip along the Leie river and then I am visiting friends who work as volunteers at a printing factory in Selters, Germany. You will see the biggest printer in Europe. It prints 110,000 magazines an hour!
In the next photos, I spend more time with friends in the printing factory and I even took the time to have my teeth checked to maintain good dental hygiene! The house that I am sat in is in a different country - this time, I'm in the Czech Republic!
Then things got really adventurous - I tried my hand at skiing! I also got to grips with the local currency - 1000 Czech koruna is worth £30. I finished off my week with a visit to Karlovy Vary which is famous for its thermal waters which shoot out from underground! Some people drink the waters out of special cups for health benefits!
Thank you for letting me share your holiday with you Bronte and Amelia!

Oakwood Primary School - Official Opening!
Today was our Official Opening Day!
Even though we became Oakwood Primary School at midnight on 1 January, and our first day with children was 7 January, it's been the first sunny day for our special event!
Everyone, children and adults, released an Oakwood Primary School balloon to celebrate the new school. (Every balloon has a tag, so we'll wait to see which one travels the furthest! Look at a map of finds!)
We also got our youngest and oldest pupils and staff members to cut a commemorative ribbon on our new sign.
A big thank you to everyone who helped decorate and blow up balloons, and to Sainsbury's Lordshill, who donated some new books for our library!
Some of the pictures will be in the Daily Echo on Friday 10 January.

Sam's Summer (Part 2)
And he thought he was coming home for a rest!
Hot on the heels of a wildlife trip to Sri Lanka, Sam was on a plane to Barcelona in Spain.
This time, however, it wasn't animals he was looking out for, but beautiful buildings instead.
As well as lots of Roman buildings in the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona is famous for more modern buildings designed by an architect called Gaudi. Barcelona was also home to the 1992 Olympic Games.
Listen out for more information in an assembly soon...
Sam really has made the most of his summer holidays! Now he's ready and raring to go for the first day of term tomorrow! See you then!
Sam's Summer (Part 1)
Sam has had an extremely busy summer, with lots of stories to tell!
His first trip took him to Sri Lanka, a tear-drop shaped island off the south coast of India.
He started off in Colombo, the capital, which is next to a beautiful beach:
However, Sam isn't one for sitting around, so it wasn't long before he was off on some adventures. His first stop was a tea factory. Tea production is one of Sri Lanka's biggest industries - the climate provides perfect conditions for growing tea leaves:
He then went for a walk in a National Park called Horton Plains which is high in the mountains, 1800 metres above sea level. This park sits in the 'wet zone', and he was lucky to avoid a monsoon!
He walked for 8 kilometres to see 'World's End' - a magnificent view overlooking the land below:
It wasn't long before he gave his feet a break, and instead of lots of walking, he sat in a jeep to go on several safaris. Have a look at some of the animals he saw:
You might also have noticed the wave sculpture and memorial - listen out for the story behind this in assembly soon.
To finish his trip, Sam sampled some of the local highlights - a food market, drinking from a king coconut, visiting the elephant transit home and seeing a local turtle hatchery.
After a holiday like this, he needed to come home for a rest!

Our Last Few Days...
We've had a very exciting last few days of the summer term...
Firstly, we were wowed by Oakwood's Got Talent and all the acts from every year group - and especially a surprise act making use of Miss Patchett's dressing up box. It's a bit blurry, but see if you can work out who it is...!
We also had our final Celebration Assembly at which we paid tribute to our Sports Personality of the Year, our House Point Winners, our 100% Attenders, our winning sports teams and our nine Pupils of the Year.
Here are Oscar and Sam guarding the trophies!
And we also said a temporary goodbye to Mrs Latto, as she starts her maternity leave! We wish her well!

Thank you to all the parents and family who visited the exhibition.
Year 5 and 6 were also impressed with Year 4's work.

Year 4 Roaming Romans
Many of year 4 arrived for the Roman Feast Day dressed in terrific togas.
They spent the day researching what Romans ate and found some interesting answers, for example dormice rolled in honey and poppy seeds, peacock brains and flamingo tongues.
Year 4 enjoyed a breakfast of bread, honey, dates and figs. Later on, they ate a feast of Roman stew, cucumber and eggs (no flamingo tongues in sight
Year 4 look forward to researching about the Roman army, leisure activities and much more...

SAM and ODO Visit Assembly
SAM and ODO visited assembly yesterday morning and reminded us of their important messages.
SAM's message is that School Attendance Matters.
ODO's special message is that Odd Days Off can lead to bad habits which will be a problem when you're older and have a job.
Our current whole school attendance is 96.3%, which is really good news. Keep up the good work!

Sleeping Beauty
M&M Productions once again made our first day after the Christmas break a really good day - they entertained us royally with a brilliant show.
In fine panto tradition, Sleeping Beauty did fall asleep and there was no Handsome Prince to wake her from her slumber! What to do?!
Just in the nick of time, the King knighted our hero and, as a new Prince, he fell in love and woke the Princess with a kiss.
And they all lived happily ever after!
(Apart from the evil old crone who cast the spell in the first place, of course!)

Hej från Sverige!
Hej!
(That's how you say "Hello" in Swedish!)
I went to Sweden during the summer holidays to a little town called Värmdö, which is near Stockholm, the capital city...
As you can see from the map, this part of Sweden is made up of thousands and thousands of little islands, so there's lots of water... - change to the satellite view and zoom in for a proper look round!
What do you think the Swedish words on the safety ring in my photo mean?
from SAM
PS I am in both photos, I'm just a little harder to spot in one of them!
