OSA Summer Fete!

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who planned, prepared, helped, came along, spent money, had a burger or an ice cream, played a game, had a flutter on a raffle, picked a tombola ticket, sang, danced, won a coconut, golfed, kicked a goal, nerfed a target, had their nails or face painted, designed a mask, had a cuppa and a cake, climbed or jumped over obstacles, or, in Ms Patchett's case, got gunged!

The OSA Summer Fete was a massive success and a lovely community event - a wonderful day for the Oakwood Family!

Thank you!

Logs on the playground

It was very hot in our classroom this afternoon so we decided to take our learning outside in the shade. We practised our number skills and handwriting on the playground using chalk.

Year 6 Oakhouse Wednesday

Wow - what a day! Freezing cold and pouring with rain but there we were paddling around like ducks! Check out who got stuck in the bushes! Watch this space for more Oakhouse antics!!

Year 6 Oakhouse Fun!

Year 6 are having a fantastic week so far....Monday was spent becoming wonderful budding artists and we even created a new display of our finished pieces!

In amongst the creativity we have made sausage rolls, wraps and muffins and had a sunny picnic followed by a super game of rounders on the field....
Watch this space for more news of what we are getting up to this week.....

Don't We Look Posh?!

On Wednesday, Year 6 returned to Oakwood in the evening for one last, celebratory Goodbye...

Here they are arriving...

And here they are inside - the bit their parents don't get to see...!

Getting a breather outside in their groups...

And letting go... of their balloons, and of Oakwood (*sobs*)...

Imagine The Future...!

Oakwood was really privileged to be involved in Southampton City Council's Imagine the Future event today...!

Our pupil representatives boarded the Red Funnel Isle of Wight Ferry this morning (thanks to our friends at Fairisle and their minibus!) and spent the day being involved in workshops about the future of the city of Southampton.

We talked about how we could improve the lives of young people in the city and what would be the best use of the city's money...

Thanks to the City Council, Red Funnel, Bitterne Park Sixth Form, Richard Taunton College, St Anne's Sixth Form and City College for a brilliant day!

Have a look at our Twitter storyboard below to see how the day unfolded!

A Lovely Summer's Day!

What a fantastic afternoon everyone had at the OSA Summer Fete on Friday!

It was our busiest yet, and the new Barbecue was a real hit if you were feeling peckish!

There were lots of new games to try - balancing coins on lemons was particularly frustrating and Mr Rumble was challenging to make anything out of balloons -and there were lots of old favourites too - what's a summer fete without a coconut shie?!

We also had the very talented ladies and gentlemen of the Lordswood Community Choir joining us. (They have a concert here at Oakwood on 11 July if you want to come along!)

Thanks to the amazing support and the hard work of all the volunteers, and especially Gill Handley-Garland and Gary Chafe (our chair and treasurer respectively), a great time was had by all.

We will let you know the total raised for the OSA as soon as it's been counted!

Summer coleslaw challenge!

Today Year 2 worked in groups to plan and make coleslaw, choosing from a variety of ingredients.

They all worked together to chop the vegetables, grate the carrots and mix it all together. The final products were judged by Mr Taylor, who enjoyed tasting them all and deciding which the tastiest and tangiest bowl of coleslaw was!

What do you like in your coleslaw?

Going Up, Up, Up!

Well...

It hardly seems a year since Oakwood was at Knapp House last, but it is! And they now have wifi! (Which means we might be able to blog more reliably!)

This afternoon, Groups 3 and 4 went Ringo Riding out in the estuary - more about that in a later blog...

...and Groups 1 and 2 stayed on site to tackle the newly-refurbished climb and abseil tower!

There are four different climbs and the abseil to have a go at and everyone challenged their personal best and got a little bit higher each time - most to the top.

Some even had a go... blindfolded! (This relied on great teamwork to do the spotting of the more difficult holds - you couldn't just say "Right hand up to the yellow one!")

The weather is fantastic and looks good for the week too!

Keep an eye on our Twitter Feed, as we might be posting there too...!

YR 'Munch and Crunch' snack time

To kick off our week about vegetables, YR had a very special snack time today. The children brought in samples of their favourite vegetables for everyone to share, and we went down to the field for a picnic. A lot children decided to try something new, and we talked about whether the veg might grow underground or overground. We finished off with a playtime in the sun!

Thank you to everyone who brought in snacks, we have enough to do it all again tomorrow!

Year 2 Swimming

This term Year 2 are lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn to swim and develop their swimming skills, as part of the PE curriculum.

Each Thursday the children walk to Oaklands swimming pool where they are met by instructors and coached to develop their swimming skills.

Some of the children work in the small pool while others work in big pool depending on ability and experience.

This is an important and vital skill to learn, while having fun at the the same time.

Thank you to all those who are able to help, walking to and from the pool, parents and staff members, for making this opportunity happen!

Oakie Bear on Holday

Oakie Bear went to Guernsey for his summer holiday.

He travelled on the ferry and while he was there he visited lots of interesting places and had a great time camping.

When he had written his postcard and posted it in the postbox, he noticed something was different. Can you see what it was?

Memories Will Hold Them Close...

Year 6 said the next stage of their goodbyes this morning as they took part in their leavers' service.

As always, Year 3 children had made individual, unique candle holders for Year 6 children - they used these in the service and they will take them home as keepsakes.

Robert and Trudi from Lordshill Church joined us to lead our memories, share our hopes and to bless the candles.

Year One Alien Day

Crazy times were had by all on Alien day in year 1. Children (and teachers) dressed up as Aliens and spent the day doing some fun alien-based activities. We baked some alien cupcakes, made clay models of aliens and wrote some alien poetry.
Here are some photos of the children's costumes.

Fun on a Summer Evening!

The OSA Summer Fete was a little different this year!

Instead of taking place on a Saturday afternoon, it all happened on a Friday evening and, for the first time in several years, it was sunny and we were outdoors!

We had a great range of stalls and activities - the boat races went particularly well and got everyone wet!

Miss Patchett kept us all in check as Mistress of Ceremonies (and played lots of loud music!)

Thanks to you all, we raised just over £2000 - a record for a summer fete at Oakwood!

Big thanks to Mrs Handley-Garland, all members of the OSA Committee and everyone who helped make it a huge success!

St Barbe Museum comes to visit Year 2

Today we had an exciting visitor called Laura from St Barbe Museum in Lymington.

She helped the children to compare seaside holidays now and in the past by showing them lots of interesting artifacts, photos and costumes for them to handle and try on.

We learned that some swimming costumes were even knitted from dad's old jumpers, imagine that!!!!

Sam's Summer (Part 2)

And he thought he was coming home for a rest!

Hot on the heels of a wildlife trip to Sri Lanka, Sam was on a plane to Barcelona in Spain.

This time, however, it wasn't animals he was looking out for, but beautiful buildings instead.

As well as lots of Roman buildings in the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona is famous for more modern buildings designed by an architect called Gaudi. Barcelona was also home to the 1992 Olympic Games.

Listen out for more information in an assembly soon...

Sam really has made the most of his summer holidays! Now he's ready and raring to go for the first day of term tomorrow! See you then!
