Speed Limit Checkers

This week, the two classes responsible for improving school travel investigated the speed of cars around our school (4NM and Willow). We measured them on Sandpiper Road and Woburn Road to check whether they kept to the speed limit.

4NM found that while most cars kept to the speed limit on Sandpiper Road, Woburn Road was much more dangerous to cross because some cars travelled above 30 mph. It is very important to keep looking both ways when crossing the road.

Be Bright Be Seen

Our Travel Team took charge of their own assembly this morning to bring us a very important message. Cyclists and pedestrians must always wear bright clothing to be safe on the road in the evening - especially if they want to grow up to be able to do all of this:

Day 8 in the Chick House

After a weekend holiday to Mrs Rogers' house, the chicks returned to school refreshed and ready for the children.  Seven chicks have successfully hatched and are already developing adult feathers on their wings.  Year 4 have been handling the chicks today and making sure they are clean, watered and fed.

BRAKE Giant Walk

For Road Safety Week, every year group went on a Giant Walk around Sandpiper Road and talked about how to stay safe around the roads. We also learned about being bright as the evening falls sooner.

Scooter training

This week all year 2 children took part in scooter training. The children had the opportunity to learn how to ride their scooter safely. They practised in the playground and were able to put their new skills into practise by scooting on the pavements around the school site.

The children now know what to do if they are on their scooter and they need to cross a road or they are obstructed by a person or dog along the pavement.

Well done to all children!

Year 5 at The Boat Show!

Today Year 5 went to The Boat Show to take a look at the different boats. The Boat Show is part of Southampton's culture but also links in nicely with our current Titanic topic, allowing us to look at different types of boats and how they have changed.

We were very lucky with the weather, with clear blue skies and sunshine! Some of the day's activities were: a look around a pirate ship, a tall ship, a police boat and a Sunseeker cruiser. We also learnt about safety at sea with RNLI and looked at modern life rafts. This year there was also an Aquarium with a 'The Science of Coral Fluorescence' exhibition for us to look around. We also managed to get afloat on a canoe ride.

What an action packed fun day!

Smoothie Bike

Today children from every year group got to experience active travel and healthy eating by trying out our incredible "Smoothie Bike". 

It used nothing but pedal power to  blend fruit juice to make a healthy and delicious concoction!

At the end of the day parents got to see how it worked too.    

Factory Fun.

Over the last couple of days we were lucky enough in year 5 to visit a local Hampshire business, Jude’s Ice cream in Twford. 5FL were the first to experience the joys of the Jude factory (on Tuesday), followed by 5BK (on Wednesday).

While there we met Jude herself and her husband (the businesses founder), we received a detailed talk on how the business started (back in 2002 in their family barn) to the production line today thirteen years later in the factory. In small groups we experienced a tour to observe the factory in action, meet some of the workers and learn about the business process.

We were also fortunate enough to have a taste of the yummy flavours being produced at several points in the ice cream making process. It was a fantastic day out with lots learnt, thank you again to everyone at Jude’s for making us feel so welcome and teaching us so much.

Following a visit from the Hampshire Fire Crew, Year 6 have been made very aware of how to avoid fire hazards particularly in the home.

Reflective Jackets

In year 1 we have been learning about light sources and reflectors. We also read a book called 'The Owl who's Afraid of the Dark'. We designed the main character Plop a reflective jacket to make him feel safe at night. We put all our science skills into action to test different materials and see which ones best suited the purpose.

Chicken...

Year 5 and 6 had an utterly amazing time watching 'Chicken', an original and thought provoking play written by one of the drama teachers at Oasis.

The play taught us a valuable lesson about road safety. The cast consisted of four students from Oasis - one of whom was a former Oakwood pupil. Even though there were only four actors on stage, they cleverly manipulated scenes and represented more than one character.

It was a flawless, professional performance that not only made us think but made us laugh too. We'd give it a 5 star rating and encourage all 8-12 year olds to go and watch it - it might just save your lives!

Brilliant Bikeability

Year 5 have been given the opportunity to learn to cycle safely on the road! They took part in all weathers and successfully completed their training!

The Easter break is a perfect time to get out and about!

Our latest newsletter tells you about 50 Things to do before you are 11¾!

This is a National Trust scheme to get children out and about doing all the things we tell them not to do!



Some examples are:

• Make a mud pie
• Go on a walk barefoot
• Cook on a campfire
• Eat an apple straight from a tree
• Catch a falling leaf
• Build a den!

We often say children can't do things because we think they might be too risky, but with proper thought and supervision, they normally can!

Children: make sure an adult always knows what you're planning to do and ask permission first!

It's time to cycle...

Finally, the mornings are sunny and it's bright when we go home. It's a great time to give the car a rest and enjoy a peaceful bike ride to school!

Chris Stow and his team were back today to make sure all our bike's are in safe working condition. They also gave parent's advice on bike maintenance and they even brought a few freebies to 'bling' our bikes. The stage is set for the Big Pedal on Friday!

Year 5 Internet Safety Day

As part of our important work on keeping safe on the internet, year 5 enjoyed a drama session which depicted problems that might arise from using the web. They needed to create and act out a story based upon cards and they had to show how they should keep safe.
