Year 3 write letters in French for travelling journal.

Year 3 were  recently lucky enough to come into the possession of a young French Canadian's travelling journal. The young student had the idea of starting her journal and then passing it on and seeing how far it could travel. We had fun reading all the letters in French and then composing our own letters to be included in the journal. We then passed the journal on so it could continue its journey. Take a look at our letters:-

French Day

On Friday 6th July, most of Oakwood took part in a French Day - to aid their understanding of different cultures and enjoy the opportunity to speak in French.

Year R enjoyed the story of La chenille qui fait des trous - The Hungry Caterpillar, learned to count to 10 and did some French Flag coloured butterflies. Well done Year R!

Year 1 learned the vocabulary for different fruits and did their own art in the style of Henri Matisse. Fantastic art, I'm sure you'll agree!

Year 2 researched  the Tour Eiffel and tried building them from art straws and modelling clay. They said it was très difficile!

Years 3 and 4 were given the opportunity to have le petit déjeuner - croissants, pain au chocolat et jus d'orange and Year 4 took part in some role play.

Year 3 were taking the parts of both waiter and customer and they also learned how to play pétanque in their PE lesson.Great fun!

Year 5 watched a video on how to make the perfect croque monsieur and then made their own toasted versions. They also researched Bastille Day and created art in the style of Cezanne. A full on french filled day. Well done Year 5!

Year 6 were busy rehearsing their end of year production, but they managed squeeze in a little role play a la café. Well done to Miss Patchet in her sparkly - J'adore Dior!

Très bien!

Learning French with Mr Fernandes-Berger

Mr Fernandes-Berger visited Year 3 today to help them with their French pronunciation.

Originally from Belgium, Mr Fernandes-Berger's first language is French and so he came to talk with Year 3. We went through the French alphabet and talked to our visitor using the conversational language we have learned this year. We even quizzed our visitor on his home country of Belgium as part of our European studies.

Fun with French

A little bit of French:

Over the last couple of weeks Oakwood children have been lucky enough to have a very special visitor: Lucia DiMaiolo.

Lucia studies languages at university and spent several months studying in France, so not only is she fluent in speaking French, her accent is also authentic.

She came in to help with written french and talk to Year 6 and Year 5 (featured below) about her favourite subjects, what it is like to live in France and her favourite / tasting experiences, which include frogs legs, Croque monsieur and dare I say it...McDo, an affectionate french term for MacDonalds.

On that note, you can also see some of the delicious sandwiches designed by Year 4.

In case you're interested, here is a croque monsieur recipe to try at home :

Let's Go!

Oakwood would like to say a really big Well Done and Thank You to everyone at Testlands Multisports Coaching (TMC)!

To our pupils, they are the best sports coaches in the world; to our staff they are valued colleagues (and some ex-pupils!)

In the summer, they undertook a charity bike ride from Lordshill to Paris, raising money for their charity, the Testlands Support Project.

We were very proud to be invited to the World Première of Let's Go - the film they made about the experience.

Have a look at the trailer here:

TSP helped us financially to complete the fencing for our basketball playground. We are very proud of them!

Thanks Luke and the team!

A New Outfit for Ms D-shopping, budgeting and French in Year 6.

Inspired by our French topic of clothing, and trying to help Ms D beat the winter blues, 6LD maths set were armed with the difficult task of buying her a new winter outfit.  Firstly, they had to browse different fashion pages and try to spend as much as possible of the £250.00 they were allowed to spend. It was explained that it was imperative they kept within the allotted budget-a feat which proved quite difficult for some of the more eager shoppers! They kept a running record of all costs and any change they had. Lastly, they practised their written and spoken French on the topic of clothing and adjectives. A lot of fun was had by all and lots of stylish new outfits chosen for Ms D. Take a look:-

Le Tour de France (...at Oakwood!)

It was a damp start for the cyclists from Testlands Support Project as they did their second warm-up ride of the morning here at Oakwood!

They'd already ridden several times around Southampton Common before they came to Oakwood to do an hour looping Sandpiper Road.

Create Maps or search from 80 million at MapMyRide

Next they are off to Oasis Academy for another warm-up, and they start their long journey to Portsmouth, across the channel and then on to Paris.

Keep in touch with them by following their Twitter feed - you can also see an interactive map of their progress!

Bon chance!

Oscar - En Vacances!

Oscar is enjoying his first few days of retirement by practising his French in the small Brittany village of Saint-Pol-de-Léon.

He went to the beach to go rock-pooling, had a few treats and visited the cathedral.

Finally, he caught the ferry safely back to Plymouth - so we'll see him in September.

Au revoir, Oscar!

French Food Fun!

While some of our classmates have been having fun at Fairthorne Manor, Oakthorne children have been having a lot of (messy!) fun at school!

We had a special French themed day today, and some of us even dressed up for the occasion!

We started with some music, followed by a special French breakfast of hot chocolate and croissants.

Then, we read a story called "Je m'habille et... je te croque!". See if you can work out from our painted picture what the story is about...

We finished our day with a busy time in the kitchen, making crêpes We learned how to weigh ingredients, how to crack an egg, how to sieve flour and best of all for practising at home....how to wash up!!

We then ate our pancakes with the toppings of our choice! Quelle journée!

Bonjour, tout le monde!

And read all about it!

We had an excellent French Day in school on Wednesday to celebrate the launch of learning French at Oakwood!

Year 4 have been learning French since September and starting now, all children will be learning French too!

Every child had a chance to speak in French during the day and learn more about France, its culture and the French language.

Our latest edition of OJS Pupil News tells you everything you need to know about the day's activities.

One of the activities was to construct a new version of the Eiffel Tower and you can see the girls making a good start here!
