Our task this week was to write and perform a collaborative poem on the theme of 'This is Us'. We looked at some more poetic devices like onomatopoeia and studied how poets perform their poems using voice and body language. Children worked together to come up with lines for the class poem. I'm sat here at my computer, looking out of the window at the torrential rain and hearing the dripping, pitter-patter, and it got me thinking of rainy day poems!
I had a search for some new ones and I particularly like this one by Annette Wynn, called Daisies Standing in the Rain, because it suits the summer rain and reminds me that there is always something positive to look forwards to!
Daisies standing in the rain,
Hold their heads together,
But they never once complain
Of the drenching weather.
Daisies know the sun will dry
All their dripping laces;
They're far too wise to frown and sigh
And spoil their dainty faces.

Hi Oakwood, hope you are all well? I have the pleasure of sharing a poem from my childhood written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Quentin Blake. I bought this book after Michael Rosen visited my primary school and it has been a favourite of mine ever since. I really hope you enjoy it and hopefully you might like to find some more Michael Rosen poetry. Thank you to my son Charlie for videoing this one!

Y6 have been looking at poetry in English recently, so for their homework this week they were asked to look at the poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas'. Then, in class, they performed part or all of the poem in small groups.
The Great Oakwood Poetry off, The Poetry Factor, Oakwood's got Poems - call it what ever you like, the poem performances were brilliant! Each English set nominated groups to represent them in a poetry reading final. Well done to the winning group - a great performance.

Year 6 decided to learn some poetry off by heart to impress parents on Workshare afternoon!
(We even got some parents involved - but most of them were camera-shy!)

This week the children in Year 2 have been rehearsing and performing poetry to inspire them to write their own poem using a similar style.

Remembering how to form letters is not always easy after a six week break, so in Year 3 we found fun ways to practise our "Rocking Round" letter set: following the line and writing on each other's backs before we published our unique poems "This Is Me!".
Year 2 have enjoyed reading and performing nonsense poems. A favourite being The Ning Nang Nong by Spike Milligan.
They have also been reading Limericks and have had a go at writing their own. Some of them have been quite funny and even a little bit silly, which has made them all the more fun!!

Year 2 had a fantastic No Pens Wednesday, learning how to communicate without using their pens.
They learnt sign language, learnt a poem about a magic box, made skeleton shapes, pieced together a world map and made an information book teaching the Year R children about Year 2(using the Ipads).
