Achieving Excellence Together at Home.

Well it's been almost a week since we have all been together at school but still the Oakwood School community continues to show what an AMAZING team they are. Even though many of us have switched our place of work and learning temporarily to our homes, this has not stopped everyone achieving excellence. We have been overwhelmed with how positive and enthusiastic you have all been and it has been lovely hearing about all the different types of learning you have been doing. From building shelters, playing maths games, writing stories, drawing beautiful pictures, creating thought provoking songs, daily P.E sessions-you have shown what incredible young people you all are.

Here are a few photos and videos that you have sent to show us what you have been up to. The staff at Oakwood are very proud of you all. Please keep sending in examples of what you are doing-we hope this will be the first blog of many while we are working at home.

And a little something extra from Donny in Year 3 sharing his brilliant home learning project.

Year 6 Disco!

Enjoy these photos from our Year 6 disco - it was fun but also understandably emotional. We will see a few of you next week but hope it's not too long before we see everyone. Look after yourselves, best wishes - Mrs Bateman, Mr Ackland and Miss Patchett.

Welsh National Opera Workshop

On Monday afternoon we were visited by members of the Welsh National Opera to lead a workshop for those of us who are lucky enough to be watching them perform at the Mayflower Theatre next week.

We learned all about the skills needed to be a good opera singer and the orchestra that will be performing with them. We were then taught a song from Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' that we will be singing alongside the Welsh National Opera and other schools next week. Take a look at some of our practice:-

Y6 'come Dine with Me' challenge

Last week, Y6 were set the challenge of researching, cooking, presenting (and eating) a 3 course meal in small groups.

Each course had to be based on a particular main ingredient (starter - peppers, main - salmon and dessert - pineapple) and should be a meal enough for two. The groups divided in to pairs and worked together to produce some excellent cooking. They then tested and scored each of the course their group had cooked.

We had a wonderful range of culinary delights including: Stuffed peppers, Asian steamed salmon, salmon pasta, pan fried salmon with lemon and rosemary drizzle, pineapple cheesecake and pineapple upside down cake.

Whilst not cooking, children learned about the journey that food goes on as it travels from 'farm to fork' and produced a recipe book of Y6 family favourites which are now on display in the library.

Children in Year 4 loved seeing how art has been used through the ages to express ideas and feelings. They also used clay to create a Mayan decoration ready for next half-term's topic.
