The library is open weekly on these days:
Mondays - Years R, 1 and 2
Tuesdays - Years 3 and 4
Thursdays - Years 5 and 6
There will be a member of staff from the year groups present at each session, who can be on hand to chat to about books, help you navigate the library and sign books in and out.
Oakwood have just added around 200 of the latest books to the school library for children to check out and Read IT.
There is a new 'New Books' section of the library which will host the range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry books. There are books suitable for Yr R up to Y6 including: graphic novels, picture books as well as short and long novels.
Read IT...Enjoy IT!
This week Maple Class walked to library. Some children became members and chose books for the first time while other children changed their library books and took out new books.
We had a lovely afternoon. Thank you to the parents and grandparents who walked with us.
On Tuesday, the sun was shining and Elm Class walked to Lordshill Library. The children had a great time listening to stories, exploring the wide selection of books and choosing a book to borrow. The children have been given time in class to read and enjoy their new library books. Thank you to all our parent helpers for joining us. We had a brilliant afternoon.
Last week, both classes walked to the Lordshill Library and were able to borrow three books to get them started on a lifetime of access to free books. How exciting!
Three of our able readers attended a Redbridge & Lordshill Federation Book Club Event at Southampton Central Library.
Each of the children and staff were tasked with reading a book prior to attending.
Mrs Mahoney enjoyed reading "A Boy Called Hope" by Lara Williamson. This is a wonderful, warm, funny, emotional and sometimes sad story about a boy trying to get in contact with his father.
The other books were:
"Over the Line" by Tom Palmer. A powerful historical novel about one footballer's experience in the First World War.
"Twelve Minutes to Midnight" by Christopher Edge. An exciting atmospheric thriller story.
We met with staff and children from other Federation schools to discuss our books. It was great to make new friends and really get into a great book chat!

We visited the library for the first time today. We loved exploring all the interesting story and non-fiction books. From now on, we will be visiting every Friday. Mrs Handley-Garland gave us some lovely bookmarks to take home, thank-you!
In our Reading Champions Committee today we decided to remind children and teachers of two important things. The first was to remind teachers to share poetry in the class. To do this we each chose a poetry book to take back to our class to share with them. Our second task was to remind more children to use the library after school and during lunchtimes. So we made the following video:-
The Library Committee met for the first time today. Our first decision was to rename our committee 'The Reading Champions Committee'. We decided that we preferred this name because ultimately we wanted to champion a love of reading.
After getting to know one another with a game of 'Find someone who' (which involved finding out Mr Taylor's favourite author - do you know?) we talked about our ideas for the coming year. We decided we wanted to promote the library opening times; ensure that a range of genres - poetry and non fiction amongst others - are also read for pleasure with, and to, classes and visit other libraries to establish links and magpie some good ideas from them.
We finished with a couple of poems from a great poetry book in our terrific library. A productive first meeting!
Our new library was opened earlier this term!
It's in the Key Stage 1 building, and forms part of our Linkway which will join the two buildings later on this year.
Mrs Handley-Garland (and some of her family!), Mr Barrett and Mr Chafe have worked really hard to move all the furniture and get everything set up. Children from all classes have already been visiting, borrowing books and doing research.
We think it's a really special place to be and looks amazing!
We also dug out some old photos - (going back to 2003) - which show the old junior library being set up. This slideshow goes right up to "moving out" day this year, so it's a real history of our library!
The English Committee have had a busy day. Firstly, we fed back what exciting activities we all got up to on World Book Day. All classes reported that they really enjoyed having stories read to them by another teacher.
Our task today was to explore all the wonderful picture books that we have in our KS2 library, in order to take recommendations back to our class teachers and our peers. Only a few of us had taken these books from the library before because we believed they were for younger children. We all agreed that this is certainly not the case and we would be taking more pictures books out in the future. We all thought that it would be a good idea if every teacher could read at least one picture book a week to us as there is such a great selection.
We have been celebrating World Book Day by sharing our favourite books today. We have listened to lots of stories, laughed and giggled and started to create a dance based on Traditional Stories (final piece to be shown next week!)

We have created a display in the Year 1 base with reasons for our choices. Come and find out our favourite stories, even Mr Charlesworth and Mrs Vanes.
As part of our Poetry English unit, 3BK spent a lesson in the Library reading poems in pairs then sharing their favorite poems in groups. We discussed what we enjoyed about the poems and what was our favorite poems and why.
We then came back to the class room and made a fantastic display about the poems we shared with each other.

There was a first for Oakwood Junior School last night, as the biggest group of published authors the school has ever seen assembled in the hall for their book launch!
The best bit was that all the published authors were Oakwood pupils!
Proud parents and friends raised a glass of "champagne" (!) to these talented writers and illustrators as they signed their Chocolate Muffin books.
A big Thank You to Claire and Kate from Chocolate Muffin, and also thanks to Elisha-Jade, who took the amazing photos, really capturing the atmosphere!
Many of year 4 arrived for the Roman Feast Day dressed in terrific togas.
They spent the day researching what Romans ate and found some interesting answers, for example dormice rolled in honey and poppy seeds, peacock brains and flamingo tongues.
Year 4 enjoyed a breakfast of bread, honey, dates and figs. Later on, they ate a feast of Roman stew, cucumber and eggs (no flamingo tongues in sight
Year 4 look forward to researching about the Roman army, leisure activities and much more...
Work will soon begin on the Roman Home Learning Projects which we expect to be outstanding!
Year 5's boatastic boat projects have now docked at Lordshill library. You will find them in the the children's section of the library so go and check them out!

As the school begins it end of year book return to the library, the ECT Committee have been doing their bit to ensure that the library has some exciting new literature ready for September.
After the last committee afternoon 2 members of the ECT organised a visit from the school library service. On Monday 29th June 2009 Chris Thomas joined the committee for the afternoon. Chris came armed with boxes of books to help the committee implement one of their previous ideas - to get pupils involved in choosing books for the library.
After formulating criteria by which to evaluate the books, the committee spent the afternoon reviewing and choosing new books (fiction and non fiction) for all the pupils of Oakwood to enjoy. Books about pirates, beautiful picture books and lots of humorous and exciting new story books were all chosen, with every member of the committee having at least a couple of their choices added to the school collection.
The ECT team hope to continue their good work in the new academic year and would like to thank the Year 6 members for all their hard work and wish them all the best in their new schools.

Although the 'Excellent Curriculum Team' think our library is great, we think we can make it even better. We have been working very hard all afternoon to think of interesting ideas to improve our library. We want to make it a place that all people connected with the school can use and enjoy.
