Today, Year 2 were lucky enough to have a visit from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. We learned about what you do if you ever have to phone 999 and how to test a smoke alarm. We also learned about what Firefighters wear to keep them safe. Have a look at how we got on!
Year 4 were lucky enough to be able to go to the theatre to watch Cinderella. They loved seeing inside a real theatre and figuring out how everything works. We were amazed by the talented actors who sung, danced and played instruments as well as acting!
We were invited to join Julian Clegg on his breakfast radio show at BBC Radio Solent today. Oakwood were represented by two members of our Pupil Council who spoke brilliantly about the Plastic Free Day and how we can reduce our use of plastic! Have a listen!
5FL had the best morning at Oasis Academy this morning. We took along our cat mummies to see Tracy Lyons and her amazing art studio. She taught us how to use mudroc and cover our mummies safely and brilliantly. Look out for 5BW's visit and our finished pieces!
Year 4 braved the rain today to see both domestic farm animals, as well as some exotic species from around the world.
We learnt how the the body of the bearded dragon is perfectly suited for survival in hot dry countries. We also learnt about how certain characteristics of farm animals have been selected by humans.
Thankfully, as humans, we can prepare for all weather conditions, so our children had a lovely time!
Year 2 enjoyed a visit to the Tudor House and gardens in Southampton. The children had a workshop which involved handling artifacts and dressing up, as well as a guided tour around the Castle walls as well as the city vaults.
Today Oakwood were luckily to have a visit from Brian at the RNLI. He spoke to everyone in assembly then Year 5 received a workshops learning more about water safety, linking with our Titanic work.
A HUGE thank you to Brian and the RNLI for coming to see us.
Ten children from Year 2 represented Oakwood at Cantell School's Basketball Festival. They were involved in various activities to develop their skills. What a fantastic shot they had!
A group of KS2 able scientists visited West Solent Solar Farm in Lymington last week as part of the charity's community programme.
Even though it was a dull day, the solar farm was still busy making electricity and feeding it into the national grid.
At full capacity, the farm can generate 2000kW and can boil 700 kettles simultaneously, which means that fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas are not being burned instead.
The farm cost over £2.6 million to build and it was funded by over 500 members of the local community.
We learned how the electrons from silicon are released into the circuits embedded into the panels by photons arriving in sunlight. These are then collected and pushed through technology called inverters, which then flow through the site's transformer and substation into the grid.
Have a look at the photos (click below!) as we represent the school out in the community, learning science at the same time!
We had smashing weather and great fun for two days at Fairthorne Manor. Fears were conquered, friends were made and challenges were overcome! We are really proud of the good behaviour and cooperation demonstrated by the whole group.
Last week, both classes walked to the Lordshill Library and were able to borrow three books to get them started on a lifetime of access to free books. How exciting!
Year 5 had a chilly time in Winchester at the Top Secret Headquarters of Jude's Ice Cream...
There, Jude herself and husband Theo took us through the highly secretive process of making frozen confectionery for discerning clients all over Hampshire, the rest of the UK, cruise ships and even Dubai!
It's more complicated than you might think... (You should ask your children about the special feature of the hairnets...!)
Our tour of the factory included the manufacturing rooms and the big walk-in storage freezers!
And why are we going to an Ice Cream factory, you may ask?! Well, it's all part of our Apprentice-Style Team-Working Entrepreneurial Business Project...
We are working together in groups to create a brand new business - plans, budgets, product development, marketing etc. We're using cloud-based systems (G Suite) to share our plans in our group and work on them collaboratively... And when we're done, Jude herself will be coming to school to judge the winners...
A brilliant time was had by everyone and both Jude and Theo said how much they love Oakwood coming to the factory!
