A Busy Time in Year 3
It has been a busy time in Year 3 since we have been back. Take a look:-
Year 3 started their new ICT coding unit by exploring algorithms. After watching a video to help us learn what an algorithm is we watched a dance routine and tried to work out what the algorithm was. After we worked it out we went and had a go to see if we could follow the algorithm. We then had a go at creating our own algorithms. Take a look:-
5FL have worked very hard as a team to write, perform and film a poem all about why play matters to them. They looked at a wide variety poems to inspire them, studied how to perform poetry (thank you Michael Rosen!) and worked together to film their scenes. We think it has turned out great!
Year 6 have gone high-tech in their revision during the last few weeks. They have used Crumble coding to create their own interactive quiz game. They have programmed a question selection system and written piles of testing questions to quiz their friends.
What a brilliant exhibition of home learning projects! Well done Year 5! Such a fantastic show of learning and skills.

To start off our unit on animation (inspired by the film making in Hugo Cabret) Year 3 had a go at making flip books. Take a look:-
Year 1 had the opportunity to go and experience a coding workshop at Apple Southampton in WestQuay. The children worked with two members of staff to control and move the Sphero robots. The children learnt how to drive the robots using controls and program them to follow a particular route and maze pattern. We had a fantastic time and learnt lots of new coding skills.
We can't believe this day has been and gone ... Jude and Charles came today to judge our final pitches to win our Jude's Ice-Cream challenge. They we astounded by the children's hard work and dedication to the project. Well done to the winning team 'The Ice-cream Incredibles' and all the other fantastic groups hard work. What a show you all put on!! A special thanks to Jude and her fabulous team at Jude's :)

It's been a busy 2 days for those of us at Oakthorne. Yesterday after doing some artwork, we made pizzas and brownies (delicious!) which we ate later in our movie time. Today we had a more action packed time at Woodmill doing archery and low ropes. What a great 2 days. Take a look at some of the fun we had:-
Yesterday Year 5 had an electronics day to kick start their English topic of instruction writing. They all brought in electronic (and some non-electronic!) devices/games from home, along with the instructions. They spent the first part of the morning testing out the instructions and identifying features of successful instructions. After break they had a go at creating their own instructions for a device. We then tested out our instructions and evaluated how helpful they were. Year 5 had a busy day, but learnt a lot about the importance of clear and precise instructions.

During our recent Autumn Art Week, Year 3 decided to use the iPads to photograph some of the signs of the season here at Oakwood. In groups we explored outside-observing signs both high and low. Allowed to take as many photos as we wanted, each group then had to decide on our best 5 photos to upload to google drive. Unfortunately, we were interrupted by heavy Autumn rain but we still managed to take a few shots which show the beauty of Autumn here at school. Take a look and watch out for further shots of different seasons in the coming weeks and months.
Some of our Year 6 children had a fantastic time this morning discovering the 'virtual classroom' on ICT. They managed to log in, watch a short film and complete a task - all on ICT! We are all very happy that our POSITIVE mindset has enabled us to do new things!
In year 4, we have been learning how to use stop motion - when animating. Using the I pads, we have put together short films - with an Aztec theme. Tom, in year 4, has completed this video in his own time; it's too good not to give it a public platform, so...enjoy!
Year 5 put on a great exhibition of their fantastic home learning projects, all about 'The Egyptians'. We even had a puppet show! Thank you parents and friends for coming!

Today Oakhouse children wished Mr Bisson (our amazing sewing helper) a very happy birthday. They presented him with a huge card and a box of chocolates.
In the afternoon they played board games, used the iPads and finished off the day with a DVD.
The children have all had a great week, but are now looking forward to their friends returning from Knapp House.
