Today children worked on their growth mindset, their balance, their co-ordination and their gymnastics skills as they practiced for the circus. They had a go at tightrope walking, juggling, acrobatics and other circus challenges.

Today we ready the story 'The Dot' in Year 1. We heard about a girl called Vashti who didn't think she could draw. With a little bit of support from her teacher, she found she could!
The children were all provided with a dot on their page. They created their very own piece of art using the dot. There were so many fantastic and unique ideas. Take a look at our creations.

On Wednesday we were joined by volunteers from the Ordnance Survey and some willing parent helpers to dig, cut, chop, pull, push, heave, jump away from frogs, sweat and generally work every muscle they have to prepare some of our outdoor areas for the start of something new. We are so thankful to each and everyone of them, without their hard work we would not be where we are now.
Over the next few months classes will develop their areas, spend the money we raised from our Move'athon and our donation from The Barker Mills Foundation. There may even be another Groundforce day! Ask your child about their area for more information.

Over the last term Year 3 have been learning to sew. We learned a variety of stitches including back stitch, running stitch, chain stitch, criss cross stitching and how to do a French knot. We learned how to follow a pattern, sew on buttons and, very importantly, how to undo any mistakes we made. To show off all our learned skills we produced a piece of embroidered artwork. We worked very hard and used our growth mindset. Take a look at our finished pieces:-
We can't believe this day has been and gone ... Jude and Charles came today to judge our final pitches to win our Jude's Ice-Cream challenge. Year 3 and Year 4 have been working incredibly hard at the start of this academic year. As well as working on some mind boggling maths challenges, delving into the past and asking lots of questions in Science, they have created some lovely art work to brighten up the Year 3 and 4 shared areas. Dream catchers, pots of painted flowers and word tripping Wordles produced on the computers have made their learning environment a colourful and inspiring place to be. Take a look:-

What a GREAT start to the academic year for Year 3-they certainly have impressed all their teachers! They have shown themselves to not only be determined and hard-working but also kind and caring with a great growth mindset.
It has been a busy start to the term with several children already achieving logs, had work in the Gold book or shown to other adults. Their brilliant work is already on display in the classrooms and shared areas so please feel free to come and take a peek.
As Year 3 think about moving on into their new classes, we decided to think about all those things that have made us a great team this year. We then put our science knowledge to the test and worked in teams to take part in the 'Ultimate' paper plane competition. Children worked in teams to build a fleet of four planes to fly in the four different rounds of the competition. These were:- the 'aim for the bullseye' TARGET round where the aim was to get as close to the target as possible; the 'we're going down Fred' HANG-TIME round where the teams had to keep their plane in the air for the longest amount of time; the 'keep it on the road' ACCURACY round where the teams had to try to land their plane on a landing strip in the middle of a straight path and lastly the 'gimme all you got' DISTANCE round where the goal was to fly their plane as far away from the starting line as possible. The winning group were the $$$ group and lots of fun was had by all with lots of great teamwork.

Some paint, some decoupage, some glitter and gold leaf; lots of effort and enjoyment and we finally have completed frames. We chose three colours to represent different aspects of the story Hugo Caberet: black for the smoky station where Hugo lives; red to represent the friendship and love shown in the story and white to represent the automaton. Take a look at the finished frames!

Year 3 have started their new DT work this week. They will be making photo frames based on our current class novel 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. The frame will incorporate the ancient art of papier mache and also 3D wire work.
We started by looking a little closer at the papier mache technique . We learned that it is a french word for chewed paper and that it was even used by the ancient Egyptians to make coffins. We also learned that when done properly it is incredibly strong and long lasting. So to practice the layering technique we papier mached an initial from our name. We learned the importance of layering over the edges, how much glue to use (and not use!) and how using different papers help us to know how many layers we have used.
An important part of our unit is understanding how to create a stable structure. To help us with this, and as part of our European study on France we looked at a range of famous french bridges. We saw examples of arch, beam, truss, suspension and cable stay bridges and looked very carefully at what made them secure and stable. We were then given the challenge of creating a bridge from given materials that would support a cup holding 100 pennies. Some of our bridges were more successful than others but we learned a lot! Take a look:-

During the last half term Year 3 learned and practised lots of different sewing skills each week-from threading and knotting, following a pattern to consolidating basic sewing stitches. This week we have been expanding our repertoire of stitches, in order to produce a sewn piece of artwork. Not only did we learn the lazy daisy, chain, satin and french knot stitches, we also invented a few of our own.
For the artwork we decided to use our hands as templates and create unique hand prints using a variety of stitches. We felt this would represent our own uniqueness and represent how special each of is. We put our growth mind set to good use, persevered, problem solved when things didn't go quite to plan and produced sewn hand prints we are really proud of. Take a look:-
Today Year 3 developed their map reading skills by taking part in a treasure hunt around the school grounds. They related their location and landmarks to the map to find clues - then marked the position of markers on to the map itself! They showed excellent teamwork and used their growth mindset to persevere and locate every single clue. Well done Year 3.

As Part of Y4's PSHE we have been thinking about our Growth mindset and Going for Goals. These are some half and half pictures we produced to remind our Phase of our can do attitude:
'Success comes in a can, not a cannot. Give it a try! This is a can do Phase! You can do it!'

Three of our able readers attended a Redbridge & Lordshill Federation Book Club Event at Southampton Central Library.
Each of the children and staff were tasked with reading a book prior to attending.
Mrs Mahoney enjoyed reading "A Boy Called Hope" by Lara Williamson. This is a wonderful, warm, funny, emotional and sometimes sad story about a boy trying to get in contact with his father.
The other books were:
"Over the Line" by Tom Palmer. A powerful historical novel about one footballer's experience in the First World War.
"Twelve Minutes to Midnight" by Christopher Edge. An exciting atmospheric thriller story.
We met with staff and children from other Federation schools to discuss our books. It was great to make new friends and really get into a great book chat!
Look out for Oakwood's book reviews in the next edition of Oakwood News Bites!

Year R have been building dens of all sorts this week! We have been exploring using different materials and different methods in our building. We had to really put on our thinking hats (just like CAPTAIN THINK) and problem-solve when our dens weren't working.

Some of our able mathematicians from year 2 and 3 had the great opportunity of attending our Federation Krypton Factor maths event this week.
Redbridge Primary School hosted. Newlands Primary, Shirley Warren Primary, Mansel Park Primary and Fairisle Junior schools were also represented there.
Our Oakwood pupils were fantastic ambassadors for the school; they enjoyed working alongside the others and persevered with the maths activities, games and puzzles all afternoon.
The first activity was the Numberphile Brussel Sprouts game which they all loved!
Next the children were given time to explore seven different maths activities.
Well done everyone! It was so lovely to see all the children enjoying maths and meeting new friends.

The new Year 3 children certainly impressed their teachers on their first day in Year 3. On the hottest day of the year, they did not let the heat stop their determination to complete all the challenges they were set. They started by showing off their maths, letting their teachers know some interesting maths facts about themselves. They then moved on to some difficult team challenges-balancing dice on the tip of a lolly stick and building a tower out of spaghetti that could free stand whilst balancing a marshmallow. The children worked brilliantly together, helping each other patiently and setting some impressive class records.
In the afternoon, we thought about our worries and fears and, after a short story, drew some impressive scared faces. The hair was then created by blowing paint with a straw to create that crazy, messy-terrified look. Take a look at all the fun we had;-
