Charity Fundraising by Pupils of Oakwood.

We all know what AMAZING and thoughtful children we have at Oakwood and in the past couple of days we have received a couple of emails which illustrate just this.

Incredibly, just like Captain Tom Moore, two Oakwood pupils have gone that extra mile during lock down and have been doing some fundraising.

A very proud sister in 5FL let us know about her very special young brother, Callum in Year 1, who has just finished running a staggering 27 miles for charity-that is a whole marathon! Callum started on the 11th May and finished on the 31st May. He raised a stupendous £686 for Cancer research.  Unbelievably,  he is not stopping there but is going to carry on till the end of July when he hopes he will have run a whooping 100 miles. A-MAZ-ING Callum!

But that is not all.

For another incredible pupil Lilia in Year 4 has also been fundraising for a very important cause. Dreamflight is a UK charity that changes the young lives of children with a serious illness or disability by taking them on the holiday of a lifetime to Florida. Lilia raised over £530 for the charity- which would pay for a whole day on Dreamflight. She did this by being incredibly selfless and getting sponsored for cutting lots of her hair off. Afterwards she donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust who make wigs for children who, for different reasons, have lost their hair. Dreamflight were incredibly impressed and emailed the school to let us know.

Well done!

Oakwood is very proud of you.

Oakwood Groundforce Day

On Wednesday we were joined by volunteers from the Ordnance Survey and some willing parent helpers to dig, cut, chop, pull, push, heave, jump away from frogs, sweat and generally work every muscle they have to prepare some of our outdoor areas for the start of something new. We are so thankful to each and everyone of them, without their hard work we would not be where we are now.

Over the next few months classes will develop their areas, spend the money we raised from our Move'athon and our donation from The Barker Mills Foundation. There may even be another Groundforce day! Ask your child about their area for more information.

Rights Respecting School Week

Last week, we had a focus on our Rights Respecting School learning.

As a Rights Respecting School, the Unicef Convention on the Rights of the Child is threaded through all of our learning at Oakwood. We have whole school, class, playground and restaurant charters which remind us of our rights and how we can respect them. We learn about our rights in assemblies and in our lessons. Our whole school PSHE theme for this half term is 'This is Me', and we are learning about ourselves, and how our words and actions portray our character.

Last week, we learned more about the rights of children in other countries, particularly those children who, for one reason or another, are forced to leave their homes. We also took part in the Send My Friend to School Campaign. This year, the focus for this is 'Let's Unlock Education for Everyone'.

Our learning included reading books, completing research, drama and freeze frames - to name but a few. Every child has also written to our MP as part of the Send My Friend to School campaign, and we will be sending off our letters very soon.

Groundforce Move-a-Thon!

We had a fantastic day completing our non-stop 15 minutes of activity for our Groundforce Move-a-Thon. Thank you to everyone who managed to collect sponsorship money - all of this will go towards our plans for improving our school grounds!

A big thank you to TMC who supported us with the day and made it lots of fun!

OSA Christmas Fair

The OSA Christmas Fair was a brilliant community event once again! Of course we want it to be a successful fundraiser (we'll let you know how much we raised soon!), but the most important things was that it was so well attended, and it was a reminder of just how lovely our community of children, parents and staff is. Everyone had a smile on their face! (Spot yourself in the video!)

Thanks to every one of you for the part you played in making it so. Special thanks as usual to the OSA Committee, particularly Gill and Gary, who go out of their way to make sure the whole thing comes together, Julie and Kelly in the kitchen, and to Martyn and the cleaning team for getting everything spick and span again.

(Thank you to Lidl for providing the food!)

Children In Need

We've had a very busy term, and we've put on a lot of events already...

(Our Macmillan Coffee Morning raised £1132 and Year 6's Victorian Fayre raised £665...)

...so we decided to keep things a little more low key for Children in Need this year.

Nonetheless, our small bits of loose change managed to raise £245.48, so thank you very much...

The BBC Children in Need appeal raised over £50 million on Friday evening, with more to come in, and has raised over £1 billion since it first started in 1980.

Oakwood is proud to have played its part. Thank You!

The final stages of Jude's challenge!

Over the last week the winning team 'Malteaser Meltdown' have been busy completing the final stages of their Jude's Challenge: selling the ice cream and donating their funds raised to their chosen charity (SCRATCH; Basics Banks). Today they went to Basics Bank in the Oakwood minibus to meet Duncan from Basics Bank, talk to him about what the charity does for the local area and how their money will support this. In total they raised an amazing £240!

Thank you again to Jude's Ice Cream for making this fantastic project possible!
