Indoor Athletics Finals

Following a successful qualifying campaign, the Oakwood Indoor Athletics team took part in the Indoor Athletics Finals after school on Monday.

The separate Girls and Boys teams competed in both 'track' and 'field' events with points being awarded in each discipline.

The team did really well, winning a number of events in both the track and field, and with their scores  combined Tam Oakwood managed 3rd place! Well done everyone.

Girls' Test Park Football Tournament

Earlier this week, Team Oakwood sent sent a group of 8 girls to represent Oakwood at the Test Park Football Tournament.
Oakwood were drawn in Group B so had four group games. Things got off to a great start with Oakwood beating Townhill 3-0. During their second game, try as they might, Oakwood could not find a breakthrough goal against Bitterne C of E - the Bitterne 'keeper making a number of close quarter saves: the score finished 0-0. Oakwood did manage to score in the third game, a 1-0 victory over St Monica 'B'. Nothing but a win against current group leaders Mansbridge would allow Oakwood to progress to the semi-finals  but a defensive effort from Mansbridge kept Oakwood at bay the final score 0-0.

So despite not conceding a single goal whilst winning two and drawing two, Oakwood did not progress to the knock-out rounds on goal difference alone!

Well done to all the girls who represented Oakwood so well and to our three goal scorers: Mia (1), Millie T (1) and Praise (1).

KS2 Sport 4 All

This half term's KS2 Sport 4 All activity has been a big 'hit' with the KS2 children...

They have all had an hours session of table tennis!

With some adaptable table tennis equipment and some table re-organisation, all KS2 classes were able to have a go at table tennis. If your child enjoyed their table tennis session and would like to play more, then why not sign them up for our after-school table tennis club.

School Games - Basketball league Week 4

Today was the last day of the schools' basketball league.

During weeks 1,2 and 3 team 'A' performed very well in their league games. They didn't concede a single goal and scored over 40 points in just 4 games! However, in a very difficult match in the quarter finals Oakwood came up against Orchard House whose main goal shooter was in top form. Oakwood eventually loosing 10-2.

The 'B' team had a mixed set of games in their league, so didn't qualify for main competition - dropping into the 'Plate' competition. They did go on to win their quarter final 4-2 and quickly found themselves back on court in their semi-final. They ran out of steam in towards the end of their semi-final match eventually being beaten 6-2. This did mean that they would compete in the 3rd/4th place playoff match which they won by default as opponents Ludlow withdrew.

Well done to all the players who represented team Oakwood.

School Games - Indoor Athletics Grand Final - The results

The results are in!!!!

Team Oakwood are City Champions!

The boys team amassed 70 points and finished as boys winners, and the girls finished with a mighty 77 points which was enough for 2nd place. However, overall Team Oakwood topped the table by 6 points: Springhill finishing 2nd and Bitterne 3rd.

Well done to all the team!

School Games - Indoor Athletics Grand Final

For the last few weeks, 12 of our best athletes have been representing Oakwood at an indoor athletics competition. After the competition weeks, where the top 6 teams qualified for the Grand Final, Oakwood were ranked as the No. 1 team and the team to beat in the race for gold.

The Grand Final took place at Woodlands Community School on Tuesday and saw Oakwood go head to head with: Springhill, Bassett Green, Bitterne CE, Townhill and Valentine.

The team performed very well and it looked like they had done well! We will however have to wait until the end of the week when all the scores will be collated and the winners declared - so fingers crossed!

It was week one of the schools' basketball league today. As last years winners and current holders of the league trophy, Team Oakwood were determined to do well. And do well they did!

Team A played two games, beating Ludlow A 14-0 and Bassett Green C 12-0. Their scorers were Tymaine (7), Alan (5) and Leah (1). Player of the week was Tymaine!

Team B only had time for one game this week but were equally impressive in their performance - beating Ludlow B 16-6. Scorers: Joe (5) and Zahra (3). Team B Player of the Week was Joe!

Well done to the two teams and good luck next week.

Summer 2 KS2 Sport 4 All

The KS2 Sport 4 All activity this half term was an adaptation of the game volleyball.

One of the most popular sports at the summer Paralympics is sitting volleyball. The net is at the same height as a tennis net and competitors must sit, and have 3 points of contact with the floor at all times. All children had a go, and can now appreciate the skill and athleticism needed to compete in this sport.

The second activity children had a go at was Triball. Again, an adaptation of volleyball; this time however there are three nets and three teams competing at the same time. We used a beach ball to make the games a little more manageable but the children all had great fun trying something new.

KS2 Summer 1 Sport 4 All

The sun is out, the skies are clear, and this half term the Sport 4 All activity was cricket!

It's not a sport which we have done much of at Oakwood over the last few years as our local cricket competition has been cancelled in both the last 2 years due to other teams pulling out, but all our KS2 children were keen to learn more out the great British summer sport.

So children could enjoy all that cricket has to offer...(without all the standing round that comes with Test cricket) we broke the sport down into small, fun skills: hitting the ball as far as you can (otherwise known as batting),  fielding's most glamorous moment (the diving catch) and high intensity kwik cricket. We lost quite a lot of balls into the hedges around the field, but it was all worth it! Thank you TMC.

City Hockey Champions!

It has been less than a week since the Oakwood Tag-Rugby team were crowned City Champions and they have already been outdone!

The school Hockey team, today after school, were also crowned City Champions.

The A team were top of the table going into the final two fixtures and ensured they finished with a perfect record, beating the Oakwood B team 4-0 and Springhill B team 5-0.

The B team were in 3rd place before today's matches, an even though they lost both games, 4-0 to the Oakwood A team, and 1-0 to Springhill A, we think they still managed to finish the league in 3rd place.

A big well done to all 15 players. And a special thank you to Mr Martin who came as our extra adult on the minibus each week.

KS2 Sport 4 All

Wednesday was Sport 4 All day in KS2 this week.

As it is currently the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament, our sports activity for all our pupils was Tag Rugby! Jim, from Milbrook rugby club, visited and gave each class a very muddy tag rugby session.

The children practised skills such as catching and throwing the rugby ball with proper form; movement games; and some small sided touch rugby games.

Every child enjoyed their session, even if they did get a little wet and muddy!!

Team Oakwood, Double City Champions!

The girls and boys badminton teams played in their final matches yesterday knowing victory would secure them 1st place in the leagues.

The girls team, who were undefeated, continued their domination of the league by beating both Ludlow and Springhill for the second time. So after winning 6/6 the girls really earned their gold medals (don't worry girls, they will arrive at school soon).

The boys A team were in equally fine form, winning their final three matches 3 games to nil; meaning that they also secured the league title. Well done boys.

The boys B team played very well again and also won their final two matches. The team have done exceptionally well, however we have not yet received the final table so we are unsure what position the 'B' team has finished.

Keep your eyes peeled for the update.

Federation Fitness Festival

On Friday, 15 boys and girls from Year 4 and Year 6 went to Fairisle to represent Oakwood in the Federation Fitness Festival.

It's as it sounds really...It's all those things normal people hate. Cross Country against the clock; The Bleep Test; Circuit training and just overall grit to complete a challenge. And we did it all without our Year 5 children who were off on a trip to Winchester! That meant we took extra Year 4 children - some of whom were competing against children two years older than themselves!

Well done to all the children who represented Oakwood so well, looking great in the new multi-use sports kit too might I say!

Sport 4 All Spring Term

All KS2 children have taken part in their Spring Term, Sport 4 All activity over the last two Thursday mornings.

Having already had trampolining and swimming sessions in the Autumn term, each year group had an hour long dance marathon with Miss Collins from TMC.

Children put their best foot forward (and backards, and left and right) and danced to cheesy disco, Youtube mega hits and modern pop music. All children did manage to pick up a routine or two and there were definitely some moves on show at last night's disco!!

As with all the extra sports children do at Oakwood (that aren't PE lessons, or outside school clubs) children earnt another step on their Road 2 Rio cards.

Well done everyone.

Badminton Week 3

It was another successful week for the Team Oakwood Badminton teams on Tuesday after school.

The Boys A team beat Springhill A 3-0 and Ludlow A 3-0 putting them in a commanding league position with only 2 schools/teams left to play.

The Boys B team beat Springhill B 3-0 to continue their push towards the medal places.

And finally the Girls team were victorious against Bassett Green 2-1, meaning they stay top of the girls league!

Well done all.

Badminton League Week 2

Following the great start all three teams made last week as the school's badminton league kicked off; Team Oakwood were determined to do their best again this week.

Having beaten Bassett Green 3-0 in the first week the girls team again came out on top. This time beating both Ludlow and Springhill 2-1 to ensure maximum points!
The girls have now played three, won three and we will await to see if that means we are champions, or if there will be a second round of games.

The boys A team won both of their games during week 1, however they were outplayed this week by only themselves...well, the Oakwood B team who were victorious 0-3.
Meaning the A team are now played three, won two, lost one.

As well as beating the boys A the Oakwood B team took on Bassett Green A, who squeezed past them 1-2 in three very tight games.
Oakwood B have now played four, won two, lost two.

Well done teams.

Basketball Grand Final 2015

Blogging on a Saturday is a bit of novelty! But it's not every Saturday we have two basketball teams playing in finals events!

Oakwood B and Oakwood A both finished in the top two of their respective School Games leagues so had to fight it out in the championship games.

Oakwood B were on court first, taking on Springhill B. It was fascinating to watch the end to end game with both schools making a number of shots count. At half time the scores were even at 6-6. The team continued to play well and attack, unfortunately Oakwood didn't manage to score again until 6-12 down. The final score as the hooter blew Oakood 8 - 12 Springhill.

Oakwood A took to the court second, looking to beat current trophy holders Bassett Green. Oakwood stormed into the lead 6-0 and fought tooth and nail to keep their noses in front. Slowly Bassett clawed their way back but could only narrow the score to 6-4. As the noisy crowd counted down the clock Oakwood A celebrated! Oakwood 6 - 4 Bassett Green.

A huge well done to all the players!
