Personal Best day

A fantastic final personal best day! The sports leaders and TMC organised a jam packed session for each class and the children really enjoyed having a go at the different athletics activities.

We are all looking forward to the personal best days next year.

City Athletics Championships

Today was one of the biggest days in the City's school sport calendar. The City Athletics Championship.

It was an absolutely glorious day of weather, and that seemed to bring the best out of the children competing. A whole number of City records were broken - one twice.

Although we do not yet know where the Oakwood teams finished (but we know it wasn't the top three) we do know that once again we had a very successful day. We now have more City Champions than ever.

Most track events had heats, followed by finals: the first three finishers from each heat progressing to the final. The long distance and field events were straight out finals - a fight for the gold.

Whilst everybody who represented Oakwood deserves a special mention, as they did the school proud, there are a few names I will list who made the podium in their events.

Ethan - Gold - Y3 boys 60m
Praise - Gold - Y3/4 girls throwing
Marcus - Gold - Y5 boys 80m
Amy - Gold - Y5 girls 80m
Ethan/Robbie/Jola/Marcus - Silver - Y5/6 boys 4x100m Relay
Owen - Silver - Y5/6 boys 600m
Shannon - Silver - Y5/6 girls triple jump
Robbie - Bronze - Y6 boys 80m
Jola - Bronze - Y6 boys 150m

Well done to everyone who went today and represented Team Oakwood!

Y3/4 Tag Rugby

Anything Year 5/6 can do, Year 3/4 can do just as well! Well, when it's Tag Rugby anyway.

The team of 9 girls and boys have been waiting since well before Easter for their chance to shine, as their original competition was postponed by the rain. The team were keen to get under way quickly and the first game was a true test...Fairisle.

The team played exceptionally well and got better and better as they went through the tournament. They won all of their 6 matches and scored a great number of tries against some tough opposition!

Having beaten all other schools it meant that Oakwood topped the table and were crowned City Tag-Rugby Champions.

Well done to all the children, and to player of the tournament, Leo.

Oakwood V Foundry Lane

Oakwood played their final league game of the season after school yesterday. In the warm sunshine, and with our biggest crowd of the year, the Team Oakwood welcomed Foundry Lane football team.

The game was always going to be tight, and although it was Oakwood creating chances and pressing the Foundry Lane goal, it was the visitors who found the back of the net first. A chance falling to an unmarked striker who slotted the ball past Ollie the Oakwood 'keeper.

Oakwood continued to press and did find an equaliser through a long range bouncing strike from Reece.

The second half continued without much of a chance for either team due to some excellent defending; meaning the game finished 1-1.

Well done for another top defensive performance from Alan - our man of the match.

City Hockey Champions!

It has been less than a week since the Oakwood Tag-Rugby team were crowned City Champions and they have already been outdone!

The school Hockey team, today after school, were also crowned City Champions.

The A team were top of the table going into the final two fixtures and ensured they finished with a perfect record, beating the Oakwood B team 4-0 and Springhill B team 5-0.

The B team were in 3rd place before today's matches, an even though they lost both games, 4-0 to the Oakwood A team, and 1-0 to Springhill A, we think they still managed to finish the league in 3rd place.

A big well done to all 15 players. And a special thank you to Mr Martin who came as our extra adult on the minibus each week.

Tag Rugby Champions!

Over the last couple of years Oakwood have been very successful at the School Games Tag Rugby competition, reaching the final in each year. This year the team managed to go a step further and after a tense final against Fairisle Junior School, were crowned City champions.

Oakwood took a little while to get warmed up during the first game, with the score level at 3 tries each at half time. However it was all one way traffic from there as Oakwood cruised to a 9-4 victory. The rest of the groups games turned out to be just as high scoring, Oakwood twice touching down ten tries against opponents.

Oakwood faced last years winners Bassett Green in the Semi-final and after a brilliant second half defensive performance managed to come out on top.

The final saw Oakwood take on local (friendly) rivals Fairisle Junior School. It was a game of excellent Tag Rugby, but it was Oakwood who triumphed - winning 7-5.

Player of the tournament and Oakwood's top scorer was, the rocket propelled, Robbie.

Well done Team Oakwood.

Hockey League Week 3

On Tuesday, Team Oakwood travelled to Redbridge for week 3 of the school's hockey league. Oakwood have two teams taking part in the competition and both have been doing well - but how did they get on this week? And how did the B team do under the temporary management of Mr. McPhillamy?

Week 3 results:
Oakwood B 1 - 3 Bassett Green
Oakwood B 1 - 1 Bitterne
Oakwood B 1 - 0 Springhill B

Scorers; Alex (1), Sam (1) and Paolo (1)
Player of the week - Ezra

Oakwood A 7 - 0 Bassett Green
Oakwood A 7 - 1 Bitterne
Oakwood A 3 - 0 Thornhill

Scorers; Dan (9), Jola (1), Rhys (3), Ollie (3), Cerys (1)
Player of the week - Rhys

Well done to all the players, there is just one more week left of the league and the two Oakwood teams sit in 1st and 3rd places respectively.

Team Oakwood to Team Southampton

Last week two children from Oakwood qualified and competed for Team Southampton at the Hampshire cross country championships.

Following consistent race finishes in the Southampton cross country races, both children were asked to join Team Southampton at the regional event.

The race took place on Tuesday afternoon at Gang warily in the New Forest. Ethan finished the boys race in 66th and Amy the girls race in 49th. The standard of runners was exceptionally high, with only the best of the best competing, so well done to both on this great achievement.

We are all very proud of your achievements.

The girls team finished 7th overall and the boys finished 4th.

Key stage 1 personal best day

What a fantastic day! The year 5 and 6 sports leaders did a fantastic job of planning and organising the day for all key stage 1 children to enjoy. The theme focused on the Olympics, so the children practised their athletics skills and were challenged by the sports leaders.

Well done to everyone who took part in personal best day. We're already looking forward to the next one...

Oakwood v Holy Family

After the disappointment of last weeks football match against Tanners Brook, the school football team were eager to beat Holy Family Primary School - who had turned out to be a very strong team in our match earlier this season.

Oakwood were quick to put their front foot forward, and actually had the ball in the Holy Family net before they had even touched the ball! Passing the ball around directly from kick off, Oakwood moved down the pitch and scored with their first shot of the game. It turned in to a half that Oakwood dominated and only some last minute goal line clearances stopped Team Oakwood chalking up more than the two they had by half time.

During the second half Oakwood were finally tested but they could always rely on Ollie in goal to clean up any defences errors. Oakwood scored two more goals in the second half meaning a final score of 4-0 with was thoroughly deserved.

Man of the match Ethan. Scorers Reece (3) and Ethan (1)

Hockey League Week 2

The two school hockey teams took part in week two of their schools' hockey league in the miserable weather on Tuesday afternoon.

The 'B' team were on pitch first, taking on Bitterne. It was a close game; as the two evenly matched teams neutralised each others attacking threat early on. But Oakwood did finally make the breakthrough - Sam sweeping the ball into the net. It stayed 1-0 for the rest of game, but it did take a goal line clearance from Paolo in the dying seconds to ensure Oakwood 'B' made it 2 wins out of 2.

Team 'A' were on second and also took on Bitterne, however they played Bitterne's 'Blades' team. Oakwood started brightly and controlled the game throughout. Taking the early lead with a breakaway goal for Jola after good work through the middle of the pitch by Reece. Oakwood continued to improve as the game went on, scoring 7 times in total. Daniel (3), Jola (2), Rhys (1) and an own goal.

Well done to players of the week Daniel and Paolo.

Both teams still have a number of games to play so will endeavour to play them over the next two weeks.

Keep it up Team Oakwood!

KS2 Sport 4 All

Wednesday was Sport 4 All day in KS2 this week.

As it is currently the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament, our sports activity for all our pupils was Tag Rugby! Jim, from Milbrook rugby club, visited and gave each class a very muddy tag rugby session.

The children practised skills such as catching and throwing the rugby ball with proper form; movement games; and some small sided touch rugby games.

Every child enjoyed their session, even if they did get a little wet and muddy!!

Semi-Final win for Team Oakwood

The School Football Team played their City Cup semi-final against Orchard Primary school on Wednesday after school.

Oakwood started the better team, but were punished by Orchard when they scored direct from a free kick within the first 10 minutes. Oakwood rallied and just before half time pulled level when Reece drilled into the bottom corner from distance.

The game stayed even until midway through the second half when Oakwood's substitutes began to make their mark, Ethan eventually touching home after a great piece of team inter-play.

Oakwood held strong and could have had a third, but finished 2-1 winners. Meaning Oakwood reach the City Cup final for the 4th year in a row.

Man of the match Robbie; scorers; Reece (1) and Ethan (1).

Key Stage 1 Personal Best Day

This half term's personal best day was focused speed and agility. The children had fun working through each station, which challenged them each time.

Thank you to TMC and the Year 5 Sports leaders who organised the day, which was enjoyable for everyone!

Year 2 Racket Skills festival

Yesterday, 10 children went to St George's Catholic school to take part in a fun racket skills festival.

They had to work in a team or in pairs to work through each station. Some of the activities were; to use a tennis racket to hit a target on the floor, they bounced balls off the ball to their partner and they raced against each other to move balls from one coloured cone to the matching colour on the other side of the hall.

The children had fun and enjoyed the competition against each other! Well done to all the children who participated, you represented Oakwood with excellent behaviour.

Team Oakwood, Double City Champions!

The girls and boys badminton teams played in their final matches yesterday knowing victory would secure them 1st place in the leagues.

The girls team, who were undefeated, continued their domination of the league by beating both Ludlow and Springhill for the second time. So after winning 6/6 the girls really earned their gold medals (don't worry girls, they will arrive at school soon).

The boys A team were in equally fine form, winning their final three matches 3 games to nil; meaning that they also secured the league title. Well done boys.

The boys B team played very well again and also won their final two matches. The team have done exceptionally well, however we have not yet received the final table so we are unsure what position the 'B' team has finished.

Keep your eyes peeled for the update.

Federation Fitness Festival

On Friday, 15 boys and girls from Year 4 and Year 6 went to Fairisle to represent Oakwood in the Federation Fitness Festival.

It's as it sounds really...It's all those things normal people hate. Cross Country against the clock; The Bleep Test; Circuit training and just overall grit to complete a challenge. And we did it all without our Year 5 children who were off on a trip to Winchester! That meant we took extra Year 4 children - some of whom were competing against children two years older than themselves!

Well done to all the children who represented Oakwood so well, looking great in the new multi-use sports kit too might I say!

Sport 4 All Spring Term

All KS2 children have taken part in their Spring Term, Sport 4 All activity over the last two Thursday mornings.

Having already had trampolining and swimming sessions in the Autumn term, each year group had an hour long dance marathon with Miss Collins from TMC.

Children put their best foot forward (and backards, and left and right) and danced to cheesy disco, Youtube mega hits and modern pop music. All children did manage to pick up a routine or two and there were definitely some moves on show at last night's disco!!

As with all the extra sports children do at Oakwood (that aren't PE lessons, or outside school clubs) children earnt another step on their Road 2 Rio cards.

Well done everyone.

Badminton Week 3

It was another successful week for the Team Oakwood Badminton teams on Tuesday after school.

The Boys A team beat Springhill A 3-0 and Ludlow A 3-0 putting them in a commanding league position with only 2 schools/teams left to play.

The Boys B team beat Springhill B 3-0 to continue their push towards the medal places.

And finally the Girls team were victorious against Bassett Green 2-1, meaning they stay top of the girls league!

Well done all.
