End of the football season

Team Oakwood have played their final three games of the School Football Season in the last two weeks.

They had their 5th match night at Holy Family school where they played games against Holy Family and Shirley. In blustery and difficult conditions, Oakwood worked hard and eventually prevailed 2-1 thanks to goals from Vinny and Sonny.
The second game of the night saw Oakwood come from behind to grab a 2-2 draw against Shirley. Sonny grabbing both goals in a difficult game against a well organised team.

Oakwood's final game of the season was against league winners Fairisle Junior School. It was a thrilling match with both teams determined the finish the season with a victory. It was Fairisle who scored first, but, once Oakwood had equalised through a long range strike from Vinny, it was Oakwood who looked more likely to grab the win. However, neither team could find a winning goal and the match finished 1-1.

It has been a good season for Team Oakwood with only one loss, meaning a second place league finish. Well done to all the squad, and thank you to the parents who have supported the team this year.

Oakwood 3 -1 Tanners Brook

The school football season got back underway this week as Oakwood travelled to Tanners Brook Primary school. Although it wasn't the double header that we'd hoped for, the team picked up where they'd left off in early November.

Team Oakwood looked solid in defence and were dangerous in attack, taking two chances in the first half to make it 2-0 before half time. A number of new players made their Oakwood debuts in the second half and all did well on their first outing in green and white. Tanners Brook provided more of a challenge second half but another well taken goal put Oakwood 3-0 up before a Tanners Brook consolation goal just before the end made the final score Oakwood 3-1 Tanners Brook.

Well done to our goal scorers: Vinny (1) and Sonny (2).
Man of the Match: Sonny.

School Football Team

The School Football Team have been very busy during the start of the new season. As well as their weekly training sessions, they have taken part in two 6-a-side tournaments, a City cup fixture and the first two league matches of the season.

Team Oakwood's league campaign got off to a great start against Shirley. Oakwood winning 7-0. Vinny (2), Sonny (2), Radu (1), Ethan (1) and Will (1) grabbing the goals whilst Sonny picked up the Man of the Match award.

The team played St Monica in the City Cup a few days later and played out an exciting 1-2 defeat, 'keeper Dylan making a number of top saves to keep Oakwood in the game, and earn himself the Man of the Match award.

Oakwood kept up their winning start to the league season with a 4-0 win over Holy Family in theire second game. An excellent team performance was topped off with two goals a piece from Vinny and Ethan. Midfielder Will picking up the Man of the Match award.

The games keep coming in the last two weeks of the half term before the weather and light changes and the Winter break begins.

U11 Wide Lane 6-A-Side Football Tournament

This Monday was the turn of the U11s at the annual 6-A-Side tournament.

Oakood played some excellent football and looked fully ready for the season ahead, conceeding just a single goal in their 6 group games. 3 wins, 2 draws and a loss however were not enough for Oakwood to progress to the semi-finals, finishing 3rd in a strong group.

Oakwood 0-0 Newlands
Oakwood 2-0 Bassett Green
Oakwood 1-0 Calmore
Oakwood 0-0 St Monica
Oakwood 0-1 Bitterne Manor
OAkwood 2-0 Townhill

Well done to goal scorers Bleu (1), Ethan (2), and Sonny (2). Players of the day went to Sonny for a set of excellent team performances.

Southampton City U10 6-A-Side Football

Team Oakwood took part in the Annual Wide Lane 6-A-Side football tournament today.

The weather was fantastic and the conditions were great but Team Oakwood didn't manage to qualify for the quarter finals after winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2 of their four group games.
The team played well and got better and better with each game.

They were narrowly beaten by group winners Kanes Hill 1-0, before going down for a second time in two games - losing 0-2 to Abbotswood. Oakwood drew the third game 0-0 but were unlucky not to take the three points having hit the crossbar, post and having a shot cleared off the line. They did however beat Sholing their last group game, winning 2-0 with Radu grabbing both goals.

Well done to all the Oakwood players but Player of the Tournament went to goal scorer Radu.

City Athletics Championships

Team Oakwood went to the Outdoor Sports Centre on Tuesday to take part in the annual City Athletics Championships. 20 schools competed in the all day event, with some of the best athletes in the City competing.

Team Oakwood performed well and picked up some excellent results. The boys team picked up 15 points -enough for 9th place. Whilst the girls team earned 30 points (just 2 points shy of coming 2nd) for 4th place.

A combined Team Oakwood 45 points was enough for 6th place! Another solid performance at the City Athletics against some much bigger Southampton schools.

Well done to all our competitors but special mentions to our new City Champions  - Edward, Sunny-Rose and Praise.

Boys' Test Park 6-A-Side Football Tournament

The school football team played their final matches of the year on Friday afternoon, in the beautiful sunshine at Test Park. It was a last appearance in team colours for a number of players and a final chance to stake a claim for the player of the year awards.

The team got off to a solid start in a tough game against St Mary's - drawing 1-1 having fallen behind. The team's second game was against Bassett Green - Oakwood prevailing 1-0 in a game the team played very well in. The two final group games, against Beechwood and Fairisle B, were both 0-0 draws. This meant that Oakwood finished unbeaten in their group games but only picked up 6 points meaning Oakwood needed either Fairisle B or Beechwood to beat the other in order to progress to the quarter finals. However, they played out a 0-0 draw - eliminating Oakwood from the competition.

Well done to our goal scorers: Tom (1) and Sonny (1) and to our Man of the Match - Fin.

Girls' Test Park 6-A-Side Football Tournament

Team Oakwood were represented on Thursday afternoon by 7 year 5&6 girls at the Girls' Test Park 6-A-Side tournament.

Oakwood were drawn in group B and played games against Townhill, Springhill B and Holy Family. The results were:
Oakwood 1-0 Townhill
Oakwood 4-0 Springhill B
Oakwood 1-0 Holy Family

Oakwood won all three of their group games so qualified top of their group for the quarter finals where the team met Bitterne Park, Oakwood winning 2-0.

The semi-final saw Oakwood take on Springhill's A side which the team won 1-0.

With horrible weather, Oakwood took to the pitch for the final against Ludlow Junior School. In a game with quite a few chances it was Oakwood who took the lead and looked on course for a 6th consecutive clean sheet when Ludlow equalised with just 4 seconds remaining of the game - taking the game to penalties.

Mia scored Oakwood's first penalty, with Ludlow hitting their over the bar. Both second penalty takers scored their strikes, which meant Oakwood's 3rd converted penalty secured the win and a second City competition win for the girls' football team this year.

Goal scorers: Mia (7), Praise (2) and Angel (1). Player of the Day was top scorer Mia. Well done Team Oakwood.

Hampshire School Games

The Hampshire School Games is a Level 3 sports competition between schools across Hampshire and the IOW. Schools qualify through being successful in their local (Level 2) events. It is a celebration of sport for primary and secondary school children.

Oakwood have already competed in one Level three event this year (Our Indoor Athletics team competed in the Hampshire competition in April) but we also qualified to represent the Southampton School Games area the the Hampshire Games in Tag-Rugby.

Although the RFU - who were running the event today did so as a festival - (meaning there would be no winners and losers - meaning no medals and trophies etc) Team Oakwood were very successful, finishing a hypothetical 2nd!

The morning group stages were drawn geographically ensuring schools faced other Hampshire areas. Oakwood had excellent results and finished the morning games with a 100% record and topped the group results.
Oakwood's results:
Oakwood 4 - 2 Binstead
Oakwood 4 - 3 Park Gate
Oakwood 3 - 2 Stamore Primary
Oakwood 4 - 3 Park View

During the afternoon, the groups were re-sorted with schools playing other schools with similar results. Oakwood continued to play excellent rugby and again did well against some tough opposition. Oakwood were finally beaten in their last game, but this was their only defeat of the day. By our calculations, this meant Team Oakwood finished the -not a competition- in 2nd place.

Well done to all our players for their performance and behaviour on the day especially our player of the day, Alan!
Try scorers: Jenson (3), Marcus (7), Alan (7), Joe (3), Praise (2), Sonny (3) and Nathaniel (3)

City Athletics Championship

Oakwood's athletics team went to the City Athletics Championships yesterday to compete again 21 other schools on the track and out in the field (and a few sandpits).

There were some fantastic individual performances on the day as a number of children managed to reach the podium. Oakwood's most successful performances came in the Y6 80m where we grabbed gold in both the Girls and Boys races - 2 City Champions!

Neither the Girls/Boys or the overall team made it into the top 3, so we will have to wait until the results are sent out later this week to confirm our position.

Well done to every child who went with the team and did their best! Whether is was in just 1 race, or they managed to reach the finals we are proud of the performance of every child!

There are a number of photos on the daily echo site and there will be a write up in 'The Pink' this weekend.

Y5/6 Tri-Golf Competition

Well, we had the weather for it!

12 children from Y5 visited the Southampton Golf Course this afternoon to take part in the Southampton School Games Y5/6 Tri-Golf competition.

We won't know the results of the competition for a few days, but the children enjoyed the sunshine and had a great afternoon testing their golf skills.

School Games Hockey League Week 2

Today was week two of the Schools' Hockey League. Both Oakwood teams had another two games to play and were hopeful for good results. The sunshine made the 15 minute games very hard work but Team Oakwood gave it their all.

The 'A' team followed up last weeks wins with a 4-0 victory over Bitterne Primary and despite dominating against Valentine it took a last second goal to salvage a 1-1 draw.
Scorers this week: Nathaniel (3) and Marcus (2). This week's player of the week - Marcus!

The 'B' team battled hard in their first game but lost out to a single goal - going down 0-1 to Ludlow. Oakwood struggled to cope with Valentine's star player in their second match and suffered a 0-3 loss.
This week's player of the week - James.

Both teams have their final group games next week.

School Games Hockey League

Well done to the two Oakwood teams who represented us at at the 1st week of the school games hockey league last night.

Oakwood 'B' lost heavily in their first game which was against Springhill A, but made big improvements in their second game as they lost 4-1 to Bitterne C of E. Jimmy grabbed the Oakwood goal and the player of the day for the Team 'B'.

Oakwood 'A' got off to a better start, beating Springhill B 4-0 before having to come from behind against Bassett Green to triumph 4-1. Well done to the 'A' team player of the day - Jessica. Goal scorers Hannah (1), Nathaniel (2), Jess (2), Tymaine (3) and Marcus (1).

Girls' Test Park Football Tournament

Earlier this week, Team Oakwood sent sent a group of 8 girls to represent Oakwood at the Test Park Football Tournament.
Oakwood were drawn in Group B so had four group games. Things got off to a great start with Oakwood beating Townhill 3-0. During their second game, try as they might, Oakwood could not find a breakthrough goal against Bitterne C of E - the Bitterne 'keeper making a number of close quarter saves: the score finished 0-0. Oakwood did manage to score in the third game, a 1-0 victory over St Monica 'B'. Nothing but a win against current group leaders Mansbridge would allow Oakwood to progress to the semi-finals  but a defensive effort from Mansbridge kept Oakwood at bay the final score 0-0.

So despite not conceding a single goal whilst winning two and drawing two, Oakwood did not progress to the knock-out rounds on goal difference alone!

Well done to all the girls who represented Oakwood so well and to our three goal scorers: Mia (1), Millie T (1) and Praise (1).

Hampshire Indoor Athletics Competition

Having won the Southampton Indoor Athletics competition in November, Team Oakwood went to the Hampshire event yesterday to compete against 15 other local area winners.

It was the first time Oakwood had competed at Hampshire level events for a number of years, so it was a new experience for the whole team. The level of competition was higher than the Southampton events and several of the events had changed too, so Team Oakwood had to raise their game to do well.

The team performed brilliantly throughout the afternoon and picked up some great results across a range of events. They finished a very credible 9th place, just a few points behind 8th and 7th.

Pictures were hard to come by but we did manage a couple of the sprint races as well as a video.

Y5/6 Tag-Rugby

Team Oakwood were in action today at the School Games Y5/6 Tag-Rugby event at Test Park. Oakwood are the current holders of the trophy so were very keen to bring the trophy back to Oawkood once again.

Oakwood had five group games to navigate before any possible semi-final and they were keen to ensure they got the job done properly! Their group results were as follows:

Oakwood 8 - 4 Thornhill
Oakwood 11 - 1 Ludlow B
Oakwood 7 - 0 Springhill
Oakwood 7 - 1 Bitterne B
Oakwood 4 - 5 Bassett Green

Losing their final group game was tough as it had been a very even game until the last minute. It meant that Oakwood progressed as group runners up and played Bitterne A in the semi-final. Oakwood again dominated, winning 8 - 3.

A final - against group nemesis Bassett Green - called. At half time Oakwood were in control and looked unplayable at 3-1 up. But a succession of mistakes slowly let Bassett Green back into the game: they pulled level at 4 - 4 with just a minute to play. Unfortunately a final mistake led to Bassett scoring again and taking a 4 - 5 lead with just seconds left on the clock. Bassett fully deserved to win on their second half performance but the game showed just how cruel sport can be.

Well done to all of Oakwood's 7 players who were OUTSTANDING! Special mention to player of the day, Marcus.

City Cross County Championships

On Friday it was the turn of Y5/6 children to attend the City Cross Country Championship race at the Sports Centre.

Some of the children were running for the first time, having not run in the league before Christmas, and did really well. See their results below.

A big well done to everyone who raced from Y3/4/5& 6 over the last two weeks.

Y3/4 Tag-Rugby Competition

Team Oakwood has been very busy recently. This time is was Y3/4 Tag-Rugby; as 8 children 'Tryed' and 'Tagged' to keep hold of the trophy we won last year.

Oakwood were drawn in Pool 'A', which on reflection, was definitely the trickiest group! Oakwood had to wait a game before they got underway, but their first game saw them take on Bitterne C of E Primary - winning 8-5. Their next game followed straight away and turned into a little bit of a one-sided game, Oakwood beating Springhill B 7-2. With no rest, Oakwood then played out a very exciting 4-4 draw with Fairisle.

With 2 wins and a draw Oakwood qualified top of the group and played Springhill A in the quarter-final. Oakwood were again victorious - 6-4 the final score.

The semi-final bought back Fairisle Junior, who took advantage of a tired Oakwood, to race into a 0-2 lead. Oakwood rallied, but eventually lost 4-5. (Fairisle did then go on to win the Final)

A final 'Bronze' play-off against Bitterne C of E saw Oakwood go 2-0 up before suffering a mini collapse and going 2-4 down. Again, Oakwood rallied and this time came on on top - winning 5-4.

Well done to all the players for representing Oakwood so well.

LKS2 Cross County Championship

On Friday last week Team Oakwood sent a group of children from Lower Key Stage 2 to the City Cross Country Championships which were held at the Outdoor Sports Centre. There are separate girls and boys races and both races see competitors complete a simple lap of the entire sports centre. The race distance is just over a mile and is the same course the Y5/6 children will be running this week!

Well done to all the children who took part,
