Last Week was Children's Mental Health Week and to support this Oakwood had a 'Dress to Express' Day in each year group. We can all express ourselves in the way we dress, showing everyone who we are and what we like. We accompanied that by expressing ourselves in other ways and being creative. In Year 4, we had fun designing our own Wonders of the World. First we used sweets and cocktail sticks to see what shapes were strong and stable enough to stand up. Then we had a go planning our own structure made from lollipops, built to honour one of the Greek gods.
Year 4 had fun day today organising exhibits for a museum. We looked at statuettes, house-hold items and artists impressions to think about how the way the Ancient Greeks lived was similar and different to how we live today.
Children in Year 4 loved seeing how art has been used through the ages to express ideas and feelings. They also used clay to create a Mayan decoration ready for next half-term's topic.
As part of our journey towards Arts Award Year 4 were lucky enough to have a visit from Southampton's Poet Laureate, Matt West. He shared some of his poetry with us, and helped us to create some of our our own poems!
Year 4 have been busy working away at home on their Rivers Home Learning project. We were amazed at the fantastic work they produced and had a great time sharing with Y1.
For the first time, Year 4 have designed and built catapult cars using lollipop sticks, masking tape and card. They had to design the structure of the chassis and select a body-shape that was strong and streamlined! Here are the results:
As part of Rivers topic Year 4 spent yesterday afternoon constructing a river on the playground. We thought about all the different parts of the river and watched as the water made its way down the river course.
In Year 4, we used what we have learned about solids and liquids to predict which material would be the best for protecting a falling egg.
Yesterday Y4 had a fantastic start to the day, exploring Tanner's Brook. We followed the river for a while, thinking about how different parts of the river behaved.
What a brilliant competition this was today! So many children took part and had great fun running for their house. Thanks to TMC and to all our lovely staff for helping make this event so successful today.
This half term Year 4 have been busy experimenting with mono printing. Inspired by our under the sea topic, they created some fantastic prints to illustrate their calendars with.
Year 4 have been working hard designing and making their own book jackets. Here are a sample of the first ones finished.
Year 4 were lucky enough to be able to go to the theatre to watch Cinderella. They loved seeing inside a real theatre and figuring out how everything works. We were amazed by the talented actors who sung, danced and played instruments as well as acting!
