Dress to Express

Last Week was Children's Mental Health Week and to support this Oakwood had a 'Dress to Express' Day in each year group. We can all express ourselves in the way we dress, showing everyone who we are and what we like. We accompanied that by expressing ourselves in other ways and being creative. Can you spot any of these in the photos?

New Year 3-Worries and Superheroes!

What a FANTASTIC first day for the new Year 3 children! Not only did they impress their new teachers with how BRILLIANT they were, they also produced some terrific artwork. This work was done to reflect the discussions and stories they heard today, to help them think about changes and expectations in Year 3.

Firstly, we thought about any worries we might have about our new class and we shared a short film and story. We then made worry dolls to share our worries with-inspired by our story 'Silly Billy' by Anthony Browne. Later, in the afternoon, we thought about what it means to be a superhero and how we could be superheroes in Year 3. We drew pictures of our-self as superheroes. Take a look:-

Day 8 in the Chick House

After a weekend holiday to Mrs Rogers' house, the chicks returned to school refreshed and ready for the children.  Seven chicks have successfully hatched and are already developing adult feathers on their wings.  Year 4 have been handling the chicks today and making sure they are clean, watered and fed.

Year 4 Eggciting Times

It is an eggciting time in Year 4 today, as we were greeted this morning by the arrival of four chicks in the incubator.  Currently two more eggs are pipping, so we hope to have some more arrivals by the end of the day.  Keep watching the blog for a chick update.

Healthy Schools Week in YR

Last week it was Healthy Schools week throughout the school. In Year R we focused mainly on dental health, and most of us have started brushing our teeth in school! We each have our own toothbrush that is kept in a special 'bus' to make sure they don't touch anybody else's. Some children practiced brushing using the giant teeth. We also thought about other ways to stay healthy, like eating healthy food, getting enough sleep and doing lots of exercise. Lots of us were very pleased when we got a sticker for eating all our fruit and veg at lunchtime!

50 Things to do before you're 11¾!

The Easter break is a perfect time to get out and about!

Our latest newsletter tells you about 50 Things to do before you are 11¾!

This is a National Trust scheme to get children out and about doing all the things we tell them not to do!

Some examples are:

  • Make a mud pie
  • Go on a walk barefoot
  • Cook on a campfire
  • Eat an apple straight from a tree
  • Catch a falling leaf
  • Build a den!
Here's the full list!

We often say children can't do things because we think they might be too risky, but with proper thought and supervision, they normally can!

Children: make sure an adult always knows what you're planning to do and ask permission first!

Week 3 of Y4's 'Eggciting' cooking project

Last week was the third week of the Y4 cooking project which has been inspired by egg.

With previous groups having already made Omlettes and Pancakes this weeks groups learnt how to make Veggie Egg Fried rice. A simple, healthy dish like this is an import part of learning to cook and the two groups certainly enjoyed eating theirs!
