First Aid Week at Oakwood

Wow what a fantastic week!

In July 2018, the government published proposals for all school children in England to be given training in first aid and life-saving skills. As we often are, Oakwood Primary is ahead of the game!

Meon Valley HeartStart offer life-saving training for free. We were lucky enough to be able to train with them this week in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6. Mr. Wills said it was really good clear training and much better than previous training he had taken part in.

You can see in pictures that they all seemed to enjoy the training.  They learned about how to deal with making that life saving call, choking, serious bleeding, how to put someone in the recovery position and CPR.

You can look at what was offered here: https://www.heartstartmeonvalley.co.uk/schools

Meon Valley Heartstart are affiliated to the British Heart Foundation Heartstart initiative. As a thank you we managed to raise around £50 for the charity. Its not too late to donate if you wish either. Just check out the website above.

Do you know what DR ABCD means? Please ask you children.

5FL's Awesome Class Assembly!

5FL had great fun this morning performing their class assembly to their parents and friends. Our assembly was all about our plans for the future and how our learning at Oakwood will help us when we grow up. Well done 5FL for a super assembly!

You can also have a go at our super difficult interactive quiz, programmed and coded from "Scratch"!

ChildLine visit Year 5 and Year 6

Article 19
Governments must do all they can to ensure that children are protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and mistreatment by their parents or anyone else who looks after them.

Article 24
Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

As part of our rights respecting and anti bullying work, Year 5 and 6 were visited by experienced ChildLine volunteers. Through a special assembly and guided workshops, they helped us to understand how we can all keep happy and safe. They also showed us what we can do when we we feel unhappy, unsafe and feel we don't have a voice.

SPUDILICIOUS!

It was lovely to welcome the new Year 6 today and what a great start to the year they all made. Administration tasks were carried out quickly and efficiently, and routines established.

Article 29 of the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child states, "Education must develop every child's personality, talents and abilities to the full...." This is one of the articles that Year 6 explored in a creative way in the afternoon. Each child created a potato person that expressed a uniqueness of personality and talents. Take a look at some of our potato characters:-

No Pen's Wednesday in Year 6.

No pens for Year 6 today. Instead we have been exploring how people communicate in different ways.
Through drama and storytelling, we have explored how it must feel like to arrive in a strange land where you do not understand the language and customs. We have used  music to convey our own stories and learnt a little bit about Morse code.

We have also learnt how challenging it is not to be able to use a pen but we have also discovered how important other forms of communication can be.

Year 6 Leavers' Service

We were joined by Trudi from Lordshill Church for our Year 6 Leavers' Service this morning.

As is tradition, Year 3 pupils had made special clay candle holders for Year 6 and they presented them during the service. The candles were lit and Year 6 sung.

Trudi blessed the candles and wished Year 6 well on their way.

Another rite of passage for our leavers and a really magical moment.

Oakwood Needs a Hero (or Heroine!)

It was possibly his most baffling puzzle yet. He couldn't solve it on his own. He needed a hero or heroine to help. Who could possibly assist Sherlock Holmes with "The Case of the Missing iPads"??

Heroes and Heroines wrote persuasively to apply for the position of Sherlock's sidekick. What qualities can they bring to the investigation? Are they brave and fearless? Do they have special powers? Can they stay strong in the face of great adversity?

Once the sidekick was chosen (for his incredible ability to blend seamlessly in with a crowd...!) the investigation had to begin. Clues were found, evidence was interrogated.

Was it Gangsta Granny? Her only alibi was that she was visiting Buckingham palace at the time of the theft?

Or could it have been James Bond? He claims to have been playing swingball with Snoopy!

Little Red Riding Hood and her sweet old granny must surely be blameless? Robin Hood only steals from the rich...

...and Hermione Granger and Matilta are surely just too good?

Well, following some carelessly discarded clues, Sherlock and his new assistant soon found out the culprit!

Keep your eyes peeled for the WANTED posters around school...

Thrilling Thursday at Minstead

Today at Minstead we changed from a group of children into a tribe! We painted our faces and decorated bandanas which reflected our creature or a memory of our trip. ho waAfter that, we explored the whole of Minstead's site in search of several mysterious letters, carved into blocks of wood. These spelt out an important message which summed up our time here in the New Forest - Our Fragile Earth.

In the evening, we sat around a glowing bonfire, told jokes, sang songs and Chris told us a fascinating and magical story. We might even share it in assembly when we get back!

We can't believe we are going home tomorrow! This week has gone by so quickly, probably because we have been so busy and have been having such a brilliant time.

Please see today's photo gallery!

CSI Oakwood

Year 6 C.S.I Forensic Crime Busters!
Last week Year 6 were lucky enough to be visited by Kate and James from Solent University, who also work in the field of forensic science. They came into school with loads of exciting scientific equipment, in order to help us learn how to gather evidence to solve crimes. We learnt how to lift and read fingerprints; make a foot cast; what measurements we would need to take from a suspect and how to test and identify different chemical powders.

We also got to visit Warsash Maritime Museum, where Kate and her team had set up a crime scene for us to investigate. We all had so much fun and learnt a lot about this field of science. We also got to use and apply a lot of the skills we are learning at school:- team work, problem solving and lots and lots of maths. We had a BRILLIANT time!

As we worked hard we managed to solve the clues and crack the crime, therefore we all graduated. Take a look at how smart we all look!

Oscar also enjoyed getting involved. Take a look a at Oscar the crimebusting bear!

The Last Breakfast!

Lots of our Year 6 Leavers' gathered early this morning for a final breakfast together as they faced the tears and emotion (we hope!) of their final day at Oakwood.

Thanks to Mrs DiMaiolo's superb negotiating skills (and determination!), all the food and drink had been donated by Tesco (Every Little Helps!) and Sainsburys (Whatever their slogan is...!)

It was a really lovely way to end the term and the start of a day of celebration and remembering...

We will miss you, Year 6!

(And in other news, 6CD's lunch trolley made it to the end of term! Hooray! - see photos above!)

Celebrating with Mrs Rogers

Congratulations are in order for Zita Rogers who has successfully completed the National PSHE CPD Certification Programme.

This is a nationally recognised qualification run by the Healthy Schools programme and Roehampton University, and Zita was amongst the first group of teachers and school nurses to achieve this very important award.

Here she is receiving her certificate from Paul Nugent, head of School Standards in Southampton...

The award is important because it means that the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education at Oakwood Junior School, which Zita has planned and oversees, is of an extremely high standard!

Well done to all the recipients!

5LD's Charter for Children.

As part of our SEAL topic' Good to be Me' 5LD have been looking at the lives of children in other places and times, and with different values and customs.

We examined the life of other children in the world who are not as fortunate as ourselves and it made us realise just how lucky we were- that it really was good to be us!! Here are some of the things we learnt:-

  • If we had been born a couple of centuries ago we might have had to start work at the age of four or five.
  • There are over 246 million child labourers in the world today.
  • Many children work in dangerous jobs with little money and no free time.
  • Many children lose their eyesight in poorly lit sweatshops or damage their lungs in work places which are full of fumes.
  • Many children are forced to work as soldiers and put their lives at risk.

We looked at the work of UNICEF and Save the Children who are organisations dedicated to protecting children from violence abuse and explotation. We learnt that money from special days like Comic Relief and Sports Relief help lots of children all over the world.

We decided to produce our own Children's Charters to express what we believe are the rights that every child should have. Here are a few examples:-

Racing Rockets in Year 5!!!

Yesterday Year 5 were set another problem solving challenge. We were given the task of designing our own rockets. Our success criteria were:-

  • The Rocket must be able to stand up.
  • Rocket must include boosters and other attachments.
  • The Rocket must be decorated -looking awesome!!!
  • Work co-operatively as a group - everybody must contribute.
  • Work co-operatively as a class-sharing resources and helping each other.

Here are the results-we hope you agree we did a great job!
