Commemorating the Centenary of WWI

Year 6 have been commemorating the centenary of World War I in their work this term.

They have been reading, dramatising and writing, trying to empathise with those involved.

They also watched listened to the radio production of Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo and saw the film at the cinema.

We present evocative pieces of writing by two children, both awarded Level 6 for their achievement.

Year 3 Performance Poetry

Please enjoy a selection from Year 3's poetry performances:

Every Year 3 child selected their own poem to recite in front of the whole year group. They practiced it repeatedly for one lesson with a partner, adding actions and choosing an effective style in order to perform it the next day. Some even memorised their's! These finalists used 'easy-speak' microphones to record their voice and podcast it. Who's is the best? You decide...

Listening to Oakwood!

We're finally getting the hang of making sound clips at Oakwood!

We already share lots of photographs and videos, but you should be hearing a lot more from us in the future too!

Pupils and teachers are learning to use Audacity, a program which lets us edit sound clips, music and sound effects. We can then upload these to Audioboo - a great service which means the sound clips can be played on the web:

or tweeted about like this:

We can also give you a playlist of our latest audioboos, like this:

Year 4 and Year 6 Christmas Production of 'A Pudding for a Chimney Sweep.'

It was Year 4 and Year 6's turn to put on the show this afternoon and tonight!

To capacity crowds in the Oakwood hall, they performed A Pudding for the Chimney Sweep, a sorry tale of downtrodden Victorian workers and evil factory owners. We learned of accidents in the loom machinery, cuts in wages and light-fingered debt collectors.

But hey! It's Christmas, so all worked out well in the end, and the frightfully posh Mortimer sisters got their longed-for brother!

Have a look at the photos below and the videos, which show the making of the Christmas pudding and their rehearsals.

Well done, everyone! A shilling's rise in wages all round!

Christmas News Round-Up... (Part 2)

This week, we have heard some of the most amazing singing in our two productions:

Christmas – Why do we do That? …and… Are we Nearly There Yet? It was lovely to hear some old traditional carols and to hear the storytelling in each performance.

Years 3 and 5 performed, off by heart, ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas and Years 4 and 6 shared the Story of the Nativity, once again, off by heart.

Yesterday morning, we braved the cold and frosty weather for our walk up to Lordshill Church, invited by Nick, Val and the team for our Christmas Service. Thanks to parents who were able to join us up at the church. You heard the best singing ever from the children!

And then it was back to go crackers at our Christmas Dinner…

We were very pleased, once again, to offer Christmas Dinner free for all children! Thanks to Lorraine and her team (plus extras!) in the kitchen for a lovely meal and to the OSA for providing the crackers!

Mrs Heathcock definitely enjoyed her Christmas Dinner...!

We finished with a very informal sing-song in the hall on Friday afternoon.

PS...We also thought you might like to see Year 5 leaving for Christmas by all trying to get into Ms Dowle's car once again! Well done to Kerenza and Elena for making the video.

Have a lovely Christmas!

OJS - Podcasting to the World!

We're really excited that our very first podcast is available!

A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can listen to on your computer or mp3 player. (It works especially well on iPods!) The BBC Podcast Page has a very easy explanation!

If you listen, you'll hear Holli and Cameron telling you all about the Myths which Year 5 have been reading.

It's not hard to do - follow the instructions below:

You can subscribe to the podcast and your computer will download each episode when it's available. You can do that in three ways...

If you have an iPod and iTunes, use this button...

Your podcast is now added, and iTunes will check for new episodes automatically.

If you just want to listen on your computer, use the RSS button...

...and then click on the episode you want to listen to. It will player in your computer's chosen media player.

If you have other podcasting software, copy the Myths and Legends feed URL...

http://www.oakwood-jun.southampton.sch.uk/school/podcasts/OakwoodJunio040308145251/rss.xml

...and paste it into the right place in the software. (That place will vary according to which program you have...)

Happy Listening!

(Let us know if you have any problems and we'll try to sort them out!)
