Year 2 Learning How to Divide
Year 2 have been learning what division means. We have worked in teams to practise 2 different strategies, grouping and sharing. Can you work out from our photos which is which?

We have been learning how to multiply using arrays. This week we worked in teams to match arrays to their answers. We then wrote both of the mulitplication number sentences that would match that array and answer.
Elm Class had great fun getting wet and exploring volume and capacity. We predicted and measured different amounts of water using different sized pots and measuring tubes.
We have been looking at 'Talk it...Solve it' Maths questions and discussing our ideas in groups. We have also been justifyng our reasons why we think the answer is correct.
This half term has been extremely busy in Elm class. We have finished our topic 'Changes' focusing on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and the changes they made to nursing and hospitals. We made time lines, made comparisons and wrote a non-chronological report. Some children even took their learning outside of school and went to visit Florence's grave. In maths we learned all about measuring, position and direction and also had the chance to consolidate our learning of multiplaction, which we previously learned at home during lockdown. We completed a topic on the human form in art, which was lots of fun and produced some interesting and funny final pieces that are on display in Year 2. And finally, we even managed to squeeze in swimming lessons. Needless to say, we have had lots of fun, but are ready for our week off! We look forward to our final half term before venturing into the realms of Year 3.

In Year 2 we have been learning all about position and direction in maths. We have learned our left from our right and begun to explore turns, anticlockwise and clockwise. We have loved getting outside to do this!
This week in maths, Y1 have been exploring multiplication and division through making equal groups. They were all given some counters and they had to find someone else who had an equal group to them. They then had to find someone who had an unequal group to them and find a way to make it equal. They all worked brilliantly, well done Year 1!
For the last few weeks, Year 2 have been practising their measuring skills. We have practised using rulers and metre sticks correctly, compared lengths and solved problems. We have also been practising using the vocabulary for height and length, working out which words would be the same for both and which ones would be used for only height or only length.
Elm Class came back to school with a bit of a problem. We were lost in the forest and had to solve a number of maths challenges to unlock the code to the phone with the map on. It really tested all of our maths skills and knowledge! We had a lot of fun working out each clue to find the 8 digit passcode, we got out of the forest just in time for play time.
This is for a message for all our Oakwood Primary children and families.
I love baking with my children, Sophie (9) and Edward (6)!
Edward and I would love you to try baking a carrot cake like we did. We have baked this recipe quite a few times as it always comes out well and we think it is delicious. My mum, who is an amazing cook, uses this recipe now and she has tried many carrot cake recipes over the years!
Baking is a great activity for all the family. As well as enjoyment, there are extra learning opportunities for children in the form of reading, writing, maths and science!
In addition to using the measuring scales to measure the ingredients, here are some of the maths questions I asked Edward as he was baking:
• How many grams are there in 1kg?
• 100g add 150g
• Double 250g
• What fraction of the 500g bag did we use?
• What is 4 tablespoons of butter in grams? 14.3g x 4?
Don’t worry of you do not have the exact ingredients. We used:
• All white self-raising flour as we didn’t have wholemeal.
• 1 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp cinnamon instead of 2 tsp mixed spice (or you could leave out the spice)
• Golden caster sugar instead of icing sugar
We used an electric mixer to make the icing topping but you could also whisk it by hand.
The carrot cake also works well in a round cake tin!
We hope you enjoy the egg yolk in oil video – we thought it was very interesting!
Also, Edward usually says no to cracking the eggs but agreed to do it if I filmed him! He did really well!
Good luck with your baking! Have fun!

The children in YR have been in exploring patterns. They have recognised patterns, continued a pattern and even had a go at making their own!

Parents were invited into school to have a presentation about the way in which our Maths log system works. They also had the opportunity to visit classrooms and work with their children on their particular log.

This week we have learned all about 3D shapes. We have been on 3D shape hunts, played guess my shape and built rockets with them.
We can now talk about the names of cones, cylinders, cubes, cuboids and spheres and have begun to look at their properties such as faces and edges.
On Thursday 15th November, Oakwood pupils became physicists for a time. Each year group explored various aspects of physics with practical activities.
Mr Taylor performed 3 excellent experiments to demonstrate the effects of air pressure and how aeroplanes actually fly.
Year R explored the forces of gravity, magnetism and water;
Year 1 explored floating and sinking;
I had the pleasure of teaching Year 2 about gravity and friction. They made accurate predictions and talked about the results they observed with great understanding. They also grasped the concept of fair testing; Year 3 explored light including refraction and linking to understanding of materials by creating shadow puppets in 3CB:
"Light travels as a wave. When you put your shadow puppet in between the lamp and the wall, the puppet blocks some of the light waves.

Year 1 have been very busy in Maths this half term. The children have been learning about place value; knowing how many tens and units make a number. They have been enjoying practising their counting to and from 20, especially with the flossing monkey to help them! When learning their number bonds to 10 and 20, the children have been using their wiggly fingers to help them.
