Hampshire and IOW Athletics Championship

On Tuesday 26 June Primary athletes from across the South competed in the Hampshire and Isle of  Wight Year 5/6 Athletics Championships, this year being held at Southampton Sports Centre.

Twelve children were chosen from each of the ten competing cities/areas.

Oakwood is proud to say that one of our year five girls was chosen to compete for Southampton!

She competed in the:

  • 1KG Chest push
  • Long jump
  • 150m.
She was cheered on all afternoon by her loyal fans and Mrs Worley. There was even a surprise visit from Mr Ackland!

There were five heats for the girls 150m with the times from these used to decide the winners. Oakwood's representative won her heat in a time of 25.2 seconds! Unfortunately, there were quicker times in the other heats, the winning athlete clocking an impressive 22.5seconds!

Southampton did very well during the day and finished the day in third place, bringing home the team bronze! Well done Southampton!

The Hamiltons in Mexico

Sorry it's been a while since our last blog - things have been pretty busy!

We came home to the UK for 3 weeks over Easter and enjoyed seeing a lot of our family and friends. When we returned to Mexico we spent a couple of weeks in a beautiful area called Cuernavaca - it is an old part of Mexico and had some lovely buildings. We were there to attend a language school for 2 weeks, staying with a Mexican family who were great hosts.

At the moment we are in the middle of our 'summer teams'. These are teams that come in, mainly from the US, and work with us - doing what we do all year round. In the last 3 weeks we have served around 2500 people, offering them medical, optical and dental services as well as having a children's and hair/nails area! A lot of the people simply cannot afford to go to the doctor, dentist or optician although they often need treatment. They are very grateful when we offer it to them for free :)

Mexico has now entered the 'rainy season'. Usually, this means we have sunshine for most of the day and somewhere around 4-5pm it will start to rain. The rain is often accompanied by a thunderstorm which lasts about 2 hours. Last week, however, it was cloudy, drizzly and rather chilly during the day - most unusual and, I'm happy to say, the sun has returned this week!

Lucy's school, which follows the American system, finished for the summer on May 30th! Therefore, she is free to work with us during the summer - although some school work, using the internet, is done when we have free time! Their school year starts again on August 16th.

We have been following your school blog with interest at all the different activities going on at Oakwood Junior School. We were impressed with the 5 Olympic rings that you managed to make together on sports day!

Enjoy the rest of your summer term and then your summer holidays!

A few more pictures from Knapp House...

Unfortunately, due to the weather on the last couple of days at Knapp, we were unable to blog. Now back at school we are working on putting some of the video footage and unseen photos together for a very special film-to be shown as part of the Year 6 leaving production. In the meantime we thought we would share a few more photos from the last couple of days.

World Sports Day

We joined in with the Olympic World Sport Day today!

House teams joined volunteers from TMC and Oasis Academy on a very sunny field for our annual Sports Day, which this year took place on the London 2012 World Sport Day!

Have a look at our video of the day and see if you can spot yourself!

We also commemorated London 2012 by forming the Houses and the Staff into the Five Olympic Rings! We think it was quite successful! What do you think?

(You can click on the photo for a really BIG version to try and spot yourself!)

It was a very close run thing, with only 36 points separating the teams, but Arcadia beat Aurora by just 8 points, making it the first time they have won the Sports Day Trophy in over five years!

Well done, Arcadia!

Oakhouse Friday

For their final day of Oakhouse week, Year 6 enjoyed playing on electronic games.

To keep Miss Patchett happy, the children even allowed her to have some Kylie background music on!

Oh What Fun!

Despite the dismal weather outside, Year 6 had a great laugh inside! Art, Drama, Benchball and a relaxing DVD after lunch was the perfect combination to cheer up the day, with all the children going home smiling!

Wicked Wednesday

Even though the heavens literally opened on everyone, a great day was had by all here at Knapp. Lots more fears conquered underground as our young miners elbowed their way to the surface. Take a look:-

That's a Wrap!

The day started with Year 6 catching up with the Knapp House blog. It was then an exploration of iPad apps and then off to the kitchen to make wraps and muffins.

In the afternoon a friendly rounders match was enjoyed by all, the score being:
Miss Patchett's team 5 rounders
Mr Moore's team 3½ rounders

A picnic followed with the muffins and wraps going down a treat. What a wonderful Wednesday!

Every picture tells a story!

Another beautiful morning here at Knapp and no early risers this morning (including staff!). Take a look at all the hungry campers:

Olympics 2020?

31 children from across the school attended the Southampton City Athletics Championships at Southampton Sports Centre yesterday and enjoyed the glorious sunshine and some friendly competition against 15 other Southampton schools!

Children from Years 3 and 4 competed in: 60m, 4x100m relay, 400m, as well as long jump and throwing. Whilst Years 5 and 6 also competed in 80m, 150m, 600m, 1000m, as well as high jump and triple jump.

Oakwood were represented in all the events during the day and we managed to have athletes going for gold in 12 out of the 18 event finals.

Oakwood now has some City Champions too!

We won a gold in the Y5 girls 150m final, while we also won thoroughly deserved their silver and bronze medals in the Y4 boys/girls 60m respectively.

Congratulations to all of those who represented Oakwood so fantastically during the day.

And a big thanks to all the friends and families who came to support team Oakwood.

Terrific Tuesday

All's well in sunny Devon. It's been a fantastically active Tuesday and lots of fun and smiles have been had. Here's a small taster (lots more photos to come!)

Missing You Already!

Year 6 designed and wrote postcards to friends at Knapp House, telling them of their adventures at Woodmill Activity Centre. The main topic of conversation being how Mr Moore did not reach the top of the climbing wall and Miss Patchett did, despite her shrieking!

Morning Sunshine at Knapp House

After rain and rainbows last night, the sun is shining here at Knapp. Everyone got a great night's sleep and rose nice and early (girls very early!!) to enjoy the open space and beautiful countryside here at Knapp. Here are a few photos:-

Coastal Walk, Surfing, Swimming, Low Ropes to come-we might even squeeze in a quick sneaky peak at a certain football match!

Rain and Shine at Knapp House

We've had a great day here at Knapp House - it's been sunny all day, as you can see from our Abseiling and Climbing photo stream...

We also went on the RIB Ride out into the Bristol Channel - it was raining by this point and the spray was really biting into our faces...

We also went crabbing in the rain and saw the most fantastic rainbow...

And this afternoon, the group that wasn't Abseiling and Climbing went Ringo Riding!

If you want to experience the feeling... here you go!

Pharaohs' Day in Year 5

We had a fantastic start to our new topic - 'Awesome Egyptians', featuring LOTS of toilet paper! We baked flat bread, dressed as Pharaohs and danced to the Bangles classic. Please have a look at our photos!

Oakhouse Fun in the Sun!

Year six had a great time at Woodmill Activity Centre. Please take a look at our photo gallery!

Knapp House - Monday's Photo Stream!

We're once again experimenting with "live" blogging!

We hope that the slideshow below will update during the day with photos of the our journey, arrival and first activities...

Year 3 Warhol Style!

Year three had a wonderful day finding out all about Andy Warhol. First, they started off discussing what they already know and then putting together a timeline of his work. They also had the opportunity to do some 'press printing' looking at repeating patterns 'Warhol' style. Both classes worked extremely hard today, well done!
