Year 6 at Saints Study Support Centre

About 16 people from Year 6 have been spending our Tuesday evenings for the last ten weeks at the St Mary's Stadium in Southampton for Study Support.

Amongst other things we have been...

• Improving their tables by using a torture square


• Improving punctuation in English by writing poems


• Using control technology to move lego robots


• Using Powerpoint to learn about Southampton Football Club


• making movies using stop motion technique - here's an example:

Last night, our parents and friends came along to see what we had been up to and be part of our Awards Ceremony!

OJS - Podcasting to the World!

We're really excited that our very first podcast is available!

A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can listen to on your computer or mp3 player. (It works especially well on iPods!) The BBC Podcast Page has a very easy explanation!

If you listen, you'll hear Holli and Cameron telling you all about the Myths which Year 5 have been reading.

Mrs Vaudin's Big Day Out...

Mrs Vaudin had a very special day out on Friday.

You might not know this, but she has worked at Oakwood Junior School for 25 years!

This means that she knows you all very well, but also knows lots of your parents very well too, because they knew her when they were at school!

Southampton City Council gives a very special award and certificate to people who have worked in schools for 25 years and Mrs Vaudin got hers today from the Mayor at a special ceremony at the Civic Centre...



Remember to say Congratulations to her when you see her next!

Thank you for all your hard work, Mrs Vaudin!!

(PS She gets another one when she's worked at Oakwood for 40 years!!)

Keeping Active...

We're really pleased to have been awarded Activemark for 2007.

Schools receive the mark if 90% or more of pupils across the school are doing at least 2 hours high quality PE and school sport a week



We also offer a very big range of after school sports clubs, so there are plenty of opportunities to get fit and stay fit at Oakwood!

(And that's not even mentioning all the walking we are doing at the moment!)

We had an excellent French Day in school on Wednesday to celebrate the launch of learning French at Oakwood!

Year 4 have been learning French since September and starting now, all children will be learning French too!

Every child had a chance to speak in French during the day and learn more about France, its culture and the French language.

Our latest edition of OJS Pupil News tells you everything you need to know about the day's activities.



One of the activities was to construct a new version of the Eiffel Tower and you can see the girls making a good start here!

A Visit from the Police...

It's all smiles at our Pupil of the Week Assembly!

We celebrate pupils from every class who have worked hard, behaved well, set an example, achieved targets or done something extra special. We always have important guests who present certificates and congratulate our pupils.

Today, PCSOs French and Plummer, who are good friends of the school, were our special visitors.



We see them quite often around the school and in the playground. They give us advice about keeping safe and being a helpful member of the community.

At this assembly, we also presented certificates to Farmers of the Week and Explorers of the Week who earned their special awards in Year 5's activities week. Well done to everyone!

Recycling

Have a look at our recycling display. Mr Barrett has made us a fantastic recycling lorry to collect a variety of objects e.g. batteries, milk bottle tops etc. We are also recycling paper into our new recycling bins.

Our Fantastic New Wobble Bridge...

We are really enjoying using our new Wobble Bridge in our playground.
Year R pretended they were the 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' and trip trapped
over the bridge. Luckily the troll did not appear!

We've been having a few problems with the blog over the last couple of weeks, and we've not been able to add anything new.

We are back in business now, so there'll soon be new posts about Wick Court, the RNLI Assembly, The Life Education Bus and French Day.
