Celebrating Summer!

Continuing the Country and Western theme from the Yee-Haa! Concert earlier in the week, Gill Handley-Garland, Gary Chafe and the OSA organised a fantastic Summer Fete today!

It's the first time in three years that the weather was good and we were able to hold the Fete outside!

Everyone had a brilliant time - there was so much to do, lots to buy and many, many games to have a go at! Lots of hot dogs were eaten too!

The Songsters performed and the Respect Drummers ran a workshop for everyone to have a go...

Thanks if you came along and spent some money - we'll let you know how much we raised soon!

We Can Animate...

Year 5 want to make some movies about The Hatseller story which we have been learning and rewriting.

Four of us have learned how to use stop motion animation so that we can think about storyboarding our movies and getting them filmed.

We haven't made any characters yet, because we needed to see how big they needed to be and if we needed to build special staging. (Turns out we do...!)

The software is called I Can Animate and is very easy to use. We only started half an hour ago and we've already made our first "test" movie - It's called "The Flip and the Mug." (See if you can guess why!)

Yee-Haaaaaaaa!

Foot kickin' - finger clickin' - leather slappin' - hand clappin' -
hip bumpin' - music thumpin' - knee hitchin' - heel and toe -
floor scuffin' - leg shufflin' - big grinnin' - body spinnin' -
rompin' stompin' - pumpin' jumpin' - slidin' glidin'...

...here we go!

What a fantastic Country'n'Western concert!

Songsters entertained two audiences of children and parents and grandparents and friends today with a boot-scootin' selection of songs and dances and instrumental performances.

From Dolly Parton to Taylor Swift, there was something for everyone...

We even had a visit from Black Rose, a Year 9 band from Oasis Academy Lord's Hill who performed two of their songs and, along with Paul Ibbot, provided live backing for our songs! (Three members of Black Rose used to go to Oakwood - Mrs Heathcock says it was her music lessons which made them so talented!)

Thanks also go to Mrs Peregrine and Mrs Larder who have worked with the children every week to prepare them to such a high standard.

Well done Songsters! We're really proud of you!

Concert Cooking!

There have been lots of preparations and hard work going towards our "Yee-Ha!" Songster's Concert this Wednesday.

Year 3 have been helping out by making some delicious chocolate crispie cakes which will be available as refreshments for the matinée and evening performances.

Be sure to have one if you are part of the audience!

Fabulous Footballers

All of Year 3 went to Fairisle Junior School to support our Year 3 football team in the Oaklands Family Tournament. Five other schools took part in the competition including Oakwood Infants. It came to an all Oakwood final, with Oakwood Juniors finally winning on penalties! We made it a hat trick by bringing the trophy home for the third year in a row. Well done Year 3.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Year 4 had an absolutely fantastic day at the Nuffield Theatre last week. The children spent time learning all about staging, how music is used in the theatre, costumes and actors then having a go at performing themselves.

Chicks, Chicks Chicks!

Year 4 have been lucky enough to have some very special visitors stay in their classroom.

Everyday Year 4 have been able to observe the chicks hatching from their eggs to now growing wings and feathers. The children are having a wonderful time handling, cleaning, feeding and learning all about the chicks.

Welcome to the 788th Mayor!

On Wednesday 12 May 2010, two year 5 school councillors went to the Mayor Making Ceremony at the Guildhall in the city centre of Southampton.

The Mayor Making Ceremony is where people elect a new Mayor for the city of Southampton. The new Mayor is the 788th Mayor of the city and her name is Carol Cunio.

Local councillors nominate and second the Mayor. When the Mayor walks on to the stage soldiers line up on either sides of the seats. The Councillors and the new Mayor walk inbetween the soldiers and walk up to the stage.

When the Mayor is on the stage she goes behind the curtain to the right and changes from her blue Sheriff's robes into her red Mayoral robes. When she is seated, the Town Sergeants walk up to the table she has in front of her and put a gold sceptre on a stand on the table.

After that a school choir sings for everyone. This year, the school was from St Monica Junior School.

Afterwards, the Mayor gives her first speech. Before the Mayor speaks the Town Crier says "All stand!" When the Mayor has walked to the table and when she has sat down, she says "Please be seated."

After that she signs declaration of acceptance of office as requied by law.

As School Councillors, going to the Mayor Making Ceremony made us realise what a real Council works like. We would like to thank Mrs DiMaiolo for taking us to the ceremony.

A healthy way to start the day...

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so Year 6 started today as they meant to go on...

It's also a very social way to start the day, gives you some energy and makes sure tummies don't rumble during the Year 6 tests!

On the menu: Rice Krispies, Cornflakes, toast and jam! There was even Marmite - which everyone either loves or hates! (A bit like the SATs, really!)

Thanks to Chef Worley and all the other staff who are helping this week!
