Year 1- Best. Day.Ever.

Today we celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was a fun-packed day to say the least! We started off by designing some decorative bunting and preparing flags to bring along to our lunch. We then had a look at our Jubilee art collection which was created by the whole school, it was VERY impressive!! In the KS2 hall we then had a go on the bouncey castles which were great fun! We then carried our lunches and flags outside to sit together as a school when who should arrive…..THE QUEEN! We couldn’t believe it! We waved our flags and sang, ‘God Save the Queen’. Our wonderful day was topped off with a dognut in class and then a disco! Phew! I think we’re all ready for half-term! Today was full of wonderful memories!

Year 2 Geography Day!

Yesterday, Year 2 spent the day learning about two locations. The first was the city of Southampton. We found out all about the city and we even conducted a traffic survey outside of school. We found that there were more vehicles during school drop off times than during the school day.

We also looked at Jinja in Uganda. We learned that it is the source of the River Nile. Jinja has many similarities to Southampton, including that they are both ports and have rivers running through them.

In the afternoon we had a very special visitor on the computer! We had a video call with a man called Baker who lives in Jinja, Uganda. He answered all of our questions and told us all about what it is like to live there.

We had a great day!

Year 1 Church Visit

On Tuesday, Year 1 went to visit Lordshill Church to learn about why water is 'precious' to Chrisitans and how it is used in Baptism. We were lucky enough to see baby Bella, the doll, being Baptised and to learn about how the special water is blessed and then put into the font on the altar. We then put a little bit of water onto Bella's head and helped to perform a real Baptism! We also had a look at a gown that a baby may wear during their baptism and also the candle that the church gives each baby to keep. We then listened to the story of how Jesus was Baptised by John the Baptist in the River Jordan!

Year 1 Manor Farm 2 of 2

Year 1 - Manor Farm post 1 of 2

Today Year 1 visited Manor Farm to learn about the ‘Victorian Age’ and experience what it would have been like attending a Victorian school, living in a house without ‘modern conveniences’ and working on a traditional farm. The children were all a bit shocked at how strict the school teacher was (or at least pretended to be) and how little freedom children had back then. The teacher inspected our fingernails, made us stand to attention and even threatened to make us wear a ‘dunce cap’ if we were being silly! We all agreed that we much prefer present schools as children have much more freedom and can enjoy learning! We also had a look around a home that was over 600 years old and noticed how different things were that far back in the past. For example, there was no electricity and so modern household items like washing machines were of course not available. We had a go at doing some laundry by hand and found it to be very hard work! Phew, time for a break! Cue the picnics! Photos to follow of us pond dipping and bug hunting.

Maya Portals to the Past Visitor

Our children loved learning about the Ancient Maya from our expert visitor. They learned about Hunting, Trade, Religion, Sacrifice, Sport and Games, Weapons and Warfare, Everyday Life, Technology, Writing, Maths. They even sacrificed one of their teachers!

We have also included photos of them presenting their understanding of Mayan artefacts earlier in the week.
