Wicked Wizard Maths!

In year 2 this week we have been learning all about measures.

We have had a wicked wizard maths session where the children created potions, using different capacities of ingredients.

Some followed recipes and others created their own deadly combinations, practising accurately reading a scale! ingredients included pigs spit, pixie sprinkles and dragons blood.

We hope nobody had a potion put on them!

Year One Local Walk

As part of our 'Save our World' topic, year one went on a walk around Sandpiper Road to look at ways we might want to improve our local environment. Despite some litter and graffiti,  we felt that the area was well maintained. We were, however a bit disappointed with the park area. There were only 2 swings and lots of litter! After the walk we wrote letters to the local councilor suggesting ways to improve the park. 

Year 1 Gardening

During our topic this term - It's Alive, we have planted some sunflower seeds in our garden area. All the children followed instructions carefully to give the seeds the best chance of growing. Who will grow the tallest sunflower?



Watch out for a cheeky squirrel in the garden! One afternoon a bag of seeds had been torn open and scattered everywhere...next to them a squirrel filling his cheeks with pleasure!!!

Minibeasts in Year R!

We have been learning about minibeasts! We began our topic by looking for minibeasts in the Science Walkway and carefully putting them into our ‘minibeast house’ for observation. After 2 days we released them because they are living things and need to be cared for. We have discovered that some minibeasts have wings, shells, legs and antennae. We had a go at sorting them into hoops according to our own criteria. We created our own ‘disgusting’ minibeast menu to put in our new role-play, ‘The Minibeast Café’. We also made our own masks for role-playing. We have been very luck to have some caterpillars visiting our class and have watched them grow bigger, and bigger and…….now they’re making cocoons! In 2 weeks they will emerge as butterflies! We have been retelling the story of the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ using the puppets and costumes outside. In maths, we have been learning to double. We followed a very disgusting recipe for ‘Minibeast Soup’ and doubled all the ingredients so there would be enough for both classes. Yuck! Stayed tuned for more on honey bees!

Sensational Sounds

Year 5 have been exploring how sounds are made and have been having a great deal of fun making their own musical instruments!

Sainsbury's School Games Tag Rugby tournaments

Following the Sainbury's School Games football tournament last week, Oakwood sent a Y4 and a Y6 Tag-rugby team to Test Park for a boys and girls mixed tag rugby tournament.

It was the first time either of the sets of players had played in rugby matches for school so it promised to be an exciting day.

The Y4 team  made a great start to the tournament drawing one and winning all the other games in their group - meaning they qualified for the semi-finals. Springhill proved to be a tough game but Oakwood came out on top with a couple of fantastic tries. Oakwood were then drawn against Fairisle in the final which turned out to be a high scoring game, with Oakwood winning 5-3.

The Y6 team made an even better start by winning all of their group games and flying into the semi final where they met St Marks who they had already beaten in the group stage. Oakwood triumphed again making their way to the final with a perfect record. The final proved to be a very impressive game with the teams trading tries, Bassett Green did however pull ahead and Oakwood ran out of time losing 4-5.

Well done to both teams who represented Oakwood so well.

April Club of the Month

Our April Club of the month was perhaps our best yet. Not content with just getting their dancing shoes on (for the giant dance mats in the hall) Years 3-6 also put their Samba football skills to the test in the inflatable football pitch on the top playground.

All the children, and teachers, recorded a dance score which will be submitted into the Southampton Schools dance mat competition being run by Solent University.

Look out for our May and June Club of the month events which promise to get even bigger.

Sainsbury's School Games Y5/6 football Tournament

On Wednesday, Oakwood took both a boys and girls football team to the the Test Park Sainsbury's School Games football tournament.

Having only started training in January it was the girls team's first competition and their first ever competitive matches against other schools. Under the guidance of Mr Ship the girls team battled their way to 1 win, two draws and two loses - narrowly missing out on qualification for the quarter final in their last group game.
A huge well done to the girls who all enjoyed their first taste of competitive football for team Oakwood.

The boys found qualification from their group much easier and topped the table with three wins from three games. In reaching the quarter finals the boys were drawn to play against St Monica Junior School, who beat Oakwood only a few weeks ago in the final of the City Cup, however the team took their revenge with a 1-0 win. Up next in the semi-final were Townhill Junior school, Oakwood triumphed by the same scoreline again, 1-0.
The final, against the much fancied Shirley junior school, was a close game. However two quick goals gave Shirley the lead and try as they might Oakwood couldn't find a way back into the game. Finishing runners up in cup competition for the second time this season.

Well done to both teams who represented the school so well.

Brilliant Bikeability

Year 5 have been given the opportunity to learn to cycle safely on the road! They took part in all weathers and successfully completed their training!

Counting Litter!

On Friday some of the Key Stage 1 Eco School Monitors went for a walk around Sandpiper Road to count the litter!

We have taken part in a nationwide survey by 'Keep Britain Tidy' to see which brands are most commonly found lying around our streets and parks.

The children really enjoyed filling in the survey and seeing what we could find. Close to school we found no litter, so we thought our luck was in. But the further we got away from the gate, the more we found.

Mars products such as Bounty, Galaxy, Skittles and Starbursts were the most common bits of litter that we found. I wonder what it will be nationwide?
