Our June Club of the Month

Yesterday KS2's June Club of the Month was simply sensational. With teachers having successfully completed a rain dance to keep the wet stuff at bay, all 240 KS2 children were able to walk to the Outdoor Sports Centre to take part in the Active Nation TRYathlon.
With over 20 different sports clubs and activities on offer, each child only had time to take part in about half of those on offer.

Not only did every Oakwood pupil at the Sports Centre take part in a range of fantastic sports, but they took part in the Commonwealth Games Batons journey around the world. The Baton has already been to 66 countries around the world and Southampton is one of only 16 cities in the UK which the Baton will visit.

If you were watching BBC South Today or Meridian News at 6:00 then you will even have seen what some pupils had to say!
Friday's Daily Echo also had lots of Oakwood Children in.

Keeping healthy in Year R!

Last week we met a little monkey named, 'Ricco'. We dressed-up as doctors and found-out why Ricco wasn't feeling very well. He said that he was tired all the time, had headaches, didn't have any energy and felt grumpy in the afternoons. After asking him about what he eats and what time he usually goes to bed we decided that he needs to make some changes! We 'brain-stormed' some ways that he could be healthier. We also found-out that Ricco has an iced cake in his lunch every day! We looked at how much sugar that is in a week and in a month! We decided we could help by finding a healthy muffin recipe for him and his parents to try instead. Every day we baked a different flavour of healthy muffins and taste-tested them. At the end of the week we voted. Oak class liked 'peach' the best and Beech liked 'blueberry' the best. We wrote down our recipes and sent them to the Ricco and his family to try! Enjoy!

Year R butterflies

In Year R we have been waiting patiently for our butterflies to emerge from their cocoons. We missed them by 5 hours! They began to slowly emerge from their cocoons just after the children left for their half-term holiday. They were released into a garden nearby and perhaps one day they'll pop over to our playground to say 'hello'.

Year 3 post their letters to Nottingham

Two children from Year 3 had the lucky opportunity to visit our local post office. Their job was to post all of year 3's letters, written by themselves to a Primary School in Nottingham. The children's letters were in reply to theirs, asking all about Lordswood and our current topic 'Lordswood Explorers'. The children included lots of information about The New Forest too and our fabulous trip to Lyndhurst. Whilst at the post office, the children learnt how the letters got weighed, labelled and bagged ready for posting. The children can't wait for their replies!

Sports Road Show in Year R!

We had a 'Sports Road Show' come to visit us! It was raining and pouring outside, but we were inside having a fantastic time! Have a look at us running, jumping, balancing, throwing and hopping!

Fantastic Fairground Carousels

Year four would like to thank all of the fantastic parents who managed to make it into school this afternoon to have a look at their Fairground Carousels school learning exhibition.
They have been working, in English, Science and DT lessons, to plan, design and make a fully functioning toy Carousel. From circuits and switches to themes and final designs - year four have done it all. Not only this, but they managed to produce two pieces of excellent written work as well. An explanation text about the Fairground and an instruction text on how to make a Carousel.

Our May Club of the Month

Our May Club of the Month was a frantic fun filled festival of activity!

We welcomed the Sainsbury's School Games Roadshow to Oakwood and it was Y6 who were lucky enough to kickstart the day in the morning sunshine on the school field.
The School Games Roadshow is in essence a one hour sports day for each year group. Children completed in a range of old favourites, modern events and even few surprise ones for their houses (Azura, Britannia, Ventura and Adonia), earning points as they went round. Cheered on by all the sports coaches and even a couple of mascots.

With so many activities going on it was difficult to photograph it all, but here's a taster of what KS2 got up to.



KS1 are lucky enough to be having the Roadshow at school tomorrow too! So make sure you bring your PE kits.

Year 2 Road Show

To end our 'Off We Go' topic we had a Road Show where we invited our adults in to see what fantastic work we have done over the last few weeks.

We have made vehicles with moving wheels, created an information book, explored forces and friction in science, went to Beaulieu for our trip and did some large scale, outdoor maths!

We hope the adults enjoyed looking at our work as much as we enjoyed doing it.

Year 3 do a spot of planting!

As part of our plants Science topic, year three planted a seed to start growing in school. Then it will be taken home as part of their homework. The children will be keeping a diary of observations over their half term break.

Honey Bees!

In Year R we have been learning about the wonderful Honey Bee! We have talked about how important they are to have in our world because without them we wouldn't have any fruit or vegetables! We have decided that we will try not to pick flowers anymore to help our little bee friends. We also decided that we would like to plant more flowers around the school. We bought special flowers that attract bees and planted them in our courtyard. Some of us used playdough to make bees or flowers for them. We tasted honey and wrote 'thank-you' letters to the bees. We worked together to make a new display for our classroom, making lots of flowers and buzzy bees! We did 'Honey Bee dances' outside in our maze. We pretended the maze was the hive and buzzed around the playground collecting nectar to bring back. We used scarves for our wings! For our home learning this week many of us chose to do some baking using honey as the main ingredient. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
