Indoor Athletics

On Tuesday evening 12 children from Y5&6, 6 boys and 6 girls, represented Team Oakwood in the Southampton Indoor Athletics competition at Bittren Park School.

The girls and boys teams had to compete in a number of 'lapped' relay races in the sports hall and a range of indoor athletics field events. Children earned points for their finishing position in each race and event, the winning school being the one with the highest number of points.

We are having to wait for the results as there has been some...inaccuracies...with some of the results which need to be addressed before winners are announced.

Sainsbury's School Games Benchball tournament

Oakwood sent two teams today to the School Games Benchball tournament at Chamberlayne Leisure Centre.

Each match was the best of 3 games, with 10 players on each side.

Both the Oakwood teams, Y5 and Y6 did very well, coming runners up in their groups and progressing through to the knockout stages and then on to the semi-finals. Y6 Oakwood beating Bassett Green to progress to the final, Y5 Oakwood loosing to Valentine to drop into the 3rd/4th place play off.

Unfortunately Both teams lost their final game meaning the two teams finished a very respectable 2nd and 4th. Well done to all 21 players who did their very best and represented Oakwood impeccably.

GoRunForFun

Two teams of children, one from Y5 and one from Y2, made the walk up to the Outdoor Sports Centre today to take part in Southampton's GoRunForFun school event.

The children had to complete a cross county race around a mile of the Sports Centre's toughest hills. There were children from a whole range of Southampton schools to compete against. During the morning session Oakwood runners came home in a very impressive 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Well done to all the children who went and took part, and earned their race t-shirt! And a big thank you to Mrs Vaudin, Mrs Morgan, Ms Pratt and Mrs Wheeler for accompanying the teams.

Sainsbury's School Games Mark Award

Oakwood has heard today that our efforts during the last academic year, to provide our children with sporting opportunities for all, was enough to meet the standard of a Silver School Games Mark School.

This is a great achievement for us, as we had previously missed out on the Bronze version of the same award, in 2012-13.

To achieve the Silver Games Mark we had a number of in school criteria to meet, in addition to criteria which stipulated how many children and in how many sports school teams must compete in during the year.

Well done to all the children and staff who worked towards this award!!

Sainsbury's school games Tri-Golf festival

12 children from Y4 made the short journey to the Southampton City Golf course this afternoon to take part in the Sainsbury's school games Tri-Golf Festival.

Although the wind meant that the children were unable to play Tri-Golf, they did try their hand at full golf and once in the swing of things all the children had a great time. There were no winners and losers as the festival was all about trying something new and enjoying sport.

Our May Club of the Month

Our May Club of the Month was a frantic fun filled festival of activity!

We welcomed the Sainsbury's School Games Roadshow to Oakwood and it was Y6 who were lucky enough to kickstart the day in the morning sunshine on the school field.
The School Games Roadshow is in essence a one hour sports day for each year group. Children completed in a range of old favourites, modern events and even few surprise ones for their houses (Azura, Britannia, Ventura and Adonia), earning points as they went round. Cheered on by all the sports coaches and even a couple of mascots.

With so many activities going on it was difficult to photograph it all, but here's a taster of what KS2 got up to.

KS1 are lucky enough to be having the Roadshow at school tomorrow too! So make sure you bring your PE kits.

Y5 finish second

Last week a team of Y5s competed in the Souhampton Sainsbury's School Games Benchball tournament at Chamberlayne leisure centre.

The team battled through all their games picking up some great results along the way, however they were just pipped to first place by Bassett Green. The team showed great sportsmanship throughout and Mr Shipp was delighted with team effort.

We will post the results as soon as they arrive.
