Thank you to all at City Catering, and especially Julie our Head Cook, for a fabulous Christmas Dinner today. As usual, the children enjoyed pulling crackers donated by the OSA, and a proper festive lunch, sprouts and all!
Years 4 and 6 were our final year groups to entertain us with their Christmas performance yesterday - and what a cracker it was!
The evil witch was trying to take over all the pantos in the land, and make the baddies win. It was up to 5 courageous Oakwood Pupils to save the day by collecting objects from Panto-Land.
All's well that ends well, and good overcame evil.
Another brilliant performance to make us all proud! Well done Years 4 and 6!
Years 3 and 5 treated us to two magnificent performances yesterday.
They told the story of the fourth Wise Man, Artaban, who was always late for everything!
Luckily, this meant that he was able to help lots of people along the way.
As well as amazing singing from the choir, brilliant acting and slick technical support, we also heard some delightful solos and some of our musicians performed for us too.
We used cereal boxes and our DT skills to create box theatres. We had to create a pivot, slider, lever and flap. We based them on the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
Y1 had a Paddington day to celebrate the end of this terms toys topic. We learnt all about Peru and Paddington's journey from Peru to London. We also made some delcious marmalade sandwiches to enjoy whilst we watched Paddington 2.
Southampton City Mission came to visit Y2 to explore the Christmas Story and the concept of light. The children explored what they understood by light and different sources of light then made their own "stained glass windows" with pictures from the Christmas Story. Thank you Southampton City Mission for a really fun day.
This term in English Year 4 have been busy learning the Green Ship. Inspired by Quentin Blake's story we wrote our own ship stories, and use watercolour and ink to create illustrations to go with them.
We are the Oakwood Cheerleaders! We have had a super term learning lots of new skills including: dance, stunts, jumps and cheers. Here is a little taster of some of the things we have been learning!
Year 3 performed in their very fist Music on the Map Concert today. They wowed us with their time keeping, rhythm and musicality as they played their instruments live and as a whole orchestra. Well done Year 3!
A group of year 5 and year 6 children had a great time taking part in a dance workshop at Redbridge Community School today. Maybe we will see them on 'Strictly' one day?
Year 4 braved the rain today to see both domestic farm animals, as well as some exotic species from around the world.
We learnt how the the body of the bearded dragon is perfectly suited for survival in hot dry countries. We also learnt about how certain characteristics of farm animals have been selected by humans.
Thankfully, as humans, we can prepare for all weather conditions, so our children had a lovely time!
Over the past three weeks Y5 and Y6 have been attending an indoor athletics event at Redbridge School. The children competed in field and track events. They were brilliant and worked their works off! Our overall placing in the city was 7th. Go Oakwood!
The OSA Christmas Fair was a brilliant community event once again! Of course we want it to be a successful fundraiser (we'll let you know how much we raised soon!), but the most important things was that it was so well attended, and it was a reminder of just how lovely our community of children, parents and staff is. Everyone had a smile on their face! (Spot yourself in the video!)
Thanks to every one of you for the part you played in making it so. Special thanks as usual to the OSA Committee, particularly Gill and Gary, who go out of their way to make sure the whole thing comes together, Julie and Kelly in the kitchen, and to Martyn and the cleaning team for getting everything spick and span again.
Y2 were lucky enough to have visitors from Southampton Sight who taught the children about people living with blindness and vision impairments.
It was very interactive giving the children an insight into what living with a vision impairment would be like.
The activities included: walking around using a cane, identifying objects in a feely bag, experiencing a braille book and reading books with glasses which mimic different vision impairments.
Thank you to Southampton Sight for coming to Oakwood for a really enjoyable workshop.
We've had a very busy term, and we've put on a lot of events already...
(Our Macmillan Coffee Morning raised £1132 and Year 6's Victorian Fayre raised £665...) ...so we decided to keep things a little more low key for Children in Need this year.
Nonetheless, our small bits of loose change managed to raise £245.48, so thank you very much... The BBC Children in Need appeal raised over £50 million on Friday evening, with more to come in, and has raised over £1 billion since it first started in 1980. Oakwood is proud to have played its part. Thank You!
On Thursday 15th November, Oakwood pupils became physicists for a time. Each year group explored various aspects of physics with practical activities. Mr Taylor performed 3 excellent experiments to demonstrate the effects of air pressure and how aeroplanes actually fly. Year R explored the forces of gravity, magnetism and water; Year 1 explored floating and sinking; I had the pleasure of teaching Year 2 about gravity and friction. They made accurate predictions and talked about the results they observed with great understanding. They also grasped the concept of fair testing; Year 3 explored light including refraction and linking to understanding of materials by creating shadow puppets in 3CB: "Light travels as a wave. When you put your shadow puppet in between the lamp and the wall, the puppet blocks some of the light waves.
The closer you put your shadow puppet to the lamp, the more light waves are blocked. This makes a bigger shadow. Moving the shadow puppet away from the lamp makes a smaller shadow as fewer light waves are blocked."
Year 5 investigated the effects of air resistance and friction with balloon cars.
Finally, Year 6 created periscopes to explore the law of reflection and combined a little chemistry with electronics. Potato battery anyone?
The children all loved getting stuck in to science today. We are looking forward to the next science day in the spring term, which will be biology based.
We have been working hard making WW2 oat cakes and other goodies ready for our VE celebration that we held this afternoon. We have also been writing Remembrance poems which some of us read this morning at Hollybrook cemetery, as we gathered to remember all the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in War.
A big thank you to all the parents who walked up to the cemetery with us and for all the generous donations for the celebration. There was not only enough for all the parents and children twice over, but the many cakes and biscuits that were left over were gratefully taken by Mrs Mattack to donate to a local homeless shelter.
As well as visiting the Cinema this morning for the 'Into Film' festival, Y6 visited the Southampton Cenotaph to reflect and pay their respects to those who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world.
Year 3 decided to have a bit of Halloween inspired fun today. To help us with our science topic of light Year 3 made some shadow puppets. We were learning not only about shadows but also about different materials and the amount of light that can pass through them. Look at the spooky fun we had:-
A big thank you to all of the parents and friends who were able to attend our English - Reading Workshare event this morning - I've never seen the school so full of reading!
We hope that you found our brief meeting around the Read IT skills and our new Reading Journals informative. If you do have any further questions then class teachers are your first port of call.
We also hope that you enjoyed being able to spend some time reading with your child - lots of the children were very excited to be able to share stories with you in school and there was a great reading 'buzz' everywhere.
Sorry, we forgot to publish our Victorian Fayre Blog!
Yesterday Y6 held their annual 'Victorian Fayre'!
There was a Victorian style sweet stall, a tea and coffee shop filled with copious amounts of cake, a Victorian inspired gallery, a bakery stall, a teddy stall, a bring and buy toys and games stall and a wide variety of Victorian street games to risk a penny.
Every element of the event is organised and run by the children and they did a marvellous job in turning stall holders and street sellers for the afternoon. In just a little over an hour they managed to raise a fantastic £665! Incredible!
Well done year six. AND a big HUGE thank you to everyone you made a donation to the cause or visited and spent a little money!
Today we celebrate 400 years of the Roman Empire in Britain. Our Soldiers completed a final march, our chefs prepared a lavish feast and our artisans designed a marvelous mosaic floor. However, change is coming, as worrying rumours of attacks on Rome suggest that these may be the final days of Imperial control of Britain!
Year 1 have been very busy in Maths this half term. The children have been learning about place value; knowing how many tens and units make a number. They have been enjoying practising their counting to and from 20, especially with the flossing monkey to help them! When learning their number bonds to 10 and 20, the children have been using their wiggly fingers to help them.
The children had the opportunity to bake some bread rolls this half term. They had to use their measuring, mixing, kneading and rolling skills to create the perfect bread rolls. The children had lots of fun during this activity.
This half term, Year 1's topic has been Wonderful Me. We have been learning all about our 5 senses; writing poems using them and learning about Louis Braille. In our RE, we baked some delicious bread rolls and have produced some lovely Autumnal trees in our Art work. We used our knowledge of colour mixing to make the autumn colours for our trees and have been observing the changes within the season.
Year 4 took an exciting trip to Oakwood's very own Roman museum. While we were there we had to work out what each artifact was used for by the Romans, before some of us got into character as some of the different people from the Roman era.
We held our Harvest Festival last week and what a wonderfully generous array of donations we had!
Thank you to everyone who donated for this event. Southampton City Mission volunteers arrived with their van that afternoon to transport the goods back to the Southampton Basics Bank, where it will be distributed to families in need.
As part of our Science morning, Year 4 had a great morning exploring how sound travels. We made our own string telephones and even managed to have some 10 way calls!
The School Football Team have been very busy during the start of the new season. As well as their weekly training sessions, they have taken part in two 6-a-side tournaments, a City cup fixture and the first two league matches of the season.
Team Oakwood's league campaign got off to a great start against Shirley. Oakwood winning 7-0. Vinny (2), Sonny (2), Radu (1), Ethan (1) and Will (1) grabbing the goals whilst Sonny picked up the Man of the Match award.
The team played St Monica in the City Cup a few days later and played out an exciting 1-2 defeat, 'keeper Dylan making a number of top saves to keep Oakwood in the game, and earn himself the Man of the Match award.
Oakwood kept up their winning start to the league season with a 4-0 win over Holy Family in theire second game. An excellent team performance was topped off with two goals a piece from Vinny and Ethan. Midfielder Will picking up the Man of the Match award.
The games keep coming in the last two weeks of the half term before the weather and light changes and the Winter break begins.
Year 2 had a very busy Monday morning this week! They took part in a Year 2 spelling morning to encourage them to revise spellings they already know and to learn new ones. They played fun games in teams and enjoyed independent activities, learning new spelling rules from their white spelling logs. The children can now use these games and activities to practice their spellings at home, ready to get more signed off! Well done Year 2.
Brian Masters from the RNLI came to present an assembly today about the RNLI and being safe in the water. Year 5 were then lucky enough to have a workshop with each class. This fitted in well with our current topic - Iceberg Ahead.
We had such a great turn out across the school last week to mark 'National Fitness Day'. Thanks so much to all the children who came to join in and the staff!
This Monday was the turn of the U11s at the annual 6-A-Side tournament.
Oakood played some excellent football and looked fully ready for the season ahead, conceeding just a single goal in their 6 group games. 3 wins, 2 draws and a loss however were not enough for Oakwood to progress to the semi-finals, finishing 3rd in a strong group.
Oakwood have just added around 200 of the latest books to the school library for children to check out and Read IT.
There is a new 'New Books' section of the library which will host the range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry books. There are books suitable for Yr R up to Y6 including: graphic novels, picture books as well as short and long novels.
Y6 were a group of scruffy, unclean, uneducated group of street urchins today...well, most of them...But they had an excuse...Today was Victorian Day!
The children experienced the worst and best of Victorian schooling. From the 3R's to studying the humble potato. From Drill and playground games to Calligraphy and the Dunce's hat.
The children took everything in the best of spirits and had lots to say about their Victorian experience.
Year 5 had an absolutely windy but wonderful day on Wednesday, visiting SeaCity Museum and the Southampton Boat Show. We started at SeaCity, discovering all about Southampton's links to the Titanic, life of board the ship and the disaster which caused the loss of so many lives. The children also took part in a fascinating workshop, where an expert explained more about the voyage, the sinking and the mistakes that caused the tragedy.
In the afternoon, we had a windy walk down to the Southampton Boat Show. Unfortunately, the marina was closed due to the high winds but this did not stop us from exploring the rest of the show and deciding which boat would be our future purchase!
Team Oakwood took part in the Annual Wide Lane 6-A-Side football tournament today.
The weather was fantastic and the conditions were great but Team Oakwood didn't manage to qualify for the quarter finals after winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2 of their four group games.
The team played well and got better and better with each game.
They were narrowly beaten by group winners Kanes Hill 1-0, before going down for a second time in two games - losing 0-2 to Abbotswood. Oakwood drew the third game 0-0 but were unlucky not to take the three points having hit the crossbar, post and having a shot cleared off the line. They did however beat Sholing their last group game, winning 2-0 with Radu grabbing both goals.
Well done to all the Oakwood players but Player of the Tournament went to goal scorer Radu.
Year 5 were very lucky today to have Stephen from My Bnk visit them to do the first of three workshops with us. Some of the things we learnt about about were habits, persistence and temptations. We also met the characters Super Saver and Big Spender.
We can't wait for our next workshop in two weeks time!
Year 5 had a fabulous hook day today, with all activities based upon their new topic - Iceberg Ahead! The children produced some lovely artwork using charcoal and watercolours. They had a go at making a raft only using twigs and string, then the children made some energy building, healthy cereal bars. These being linked to what makes a good snack whist out on a sailing trip for the day.
Have a look at our photos below.
Year six have had such an exciting first week back after their long summer holidays. They took part in a Design Technology and Science week - Wacky Races.
The children worked in small groups during the course of the week to design, make and power 'wacky' racing cars. These were put to the test on Friday afternoon as the groups competed for three winners' awards (Fastest Car, Best Design and Best Teamwork).
The children enjoyed their first week back and are looking forward to a successful year in Y6.
Over the summer holidays, Oakie Bear and Sam went to stay with Miss Torjussen. They had a wonderful time exploring Devon and the weather was beautiful! Some of their highlights were going for lots of long walks through the fields, looking at all of the farm animals, visiting little villages and going to the seaside. They stayed in a lovely cottage and enjoyed relaxing with cups of tea, chocolate cookies and playing games. Oakie and Sam had fun playing hide and seek... can you spot Sam up high? Oakie and Sam even made a new friend, Kofi the dog!
Oakie and Sam are excited to be back at school to see all the children again.
Year 3 and 4 were challenged to get 40 logs in the final few weeks of term with the promise of gunging Ms Dowle if they were successful.
Well done Year 3 and 4 you smashed the target and achieved over 50 logs! Unfortunately for Ms Dowle this meant being covered with a rather smelly gunge...
Year 2 have had a fun filled day and looked amazing in their costumes.
Activities included: making ships with tomatoes and cucumber, practiced a dance to the "Sailor's Hornpipe", used origami skills to make pirate boats and found out what their Pirate name is.
The children also found out how to talk like a pirate and had a treasure hunt.
Year 5 were very lucky today to have a visit from a Jane a volunteer at Naomi House. She came in to receive our cheque of funds we raised from our Jude's ice-cream sale. We raised a total of £316.30!
What a sports Day we had! Stunning weather, a morning full of fun and a sports day with KS1 and KS2 was a definite winning combination.
Congratulations to all of our wonderful Oakwood Pupils who took part, and especially to the winning house 'Adonia'!
In preparation for Year 2 moving into Year 3 the children had a closer look at their new classroom and sketched their observations in their sketch books.
On Friday Year 4 spent an exciting day exploring the new John Hansard Gallery, an art gallery in town and being introduced to the world of Gerhard Richter, a modern artist. We had an engaging tour of the gallery, then we got to create some of our own works inspired by him.
After investigating the stability of different materials and shapes, a 'build your own bridge' challenge to support a given weight, Year 3 made and decorated their own Hugo Cabret inspired photo frames. All frames stand up securely and the ingenious inclusion of a bullclip means that it fits its design purpose of ensuring different photos can be displayed when required. Take a look at the finished frames:-
This week year 4 (with the help of some kind parents) have been busy making some fantastic carousels. We put our science and D.T. skills to good use to make the circuit and construct the design.
Year 2 had a whole spelling day to encourage children to revise spellings they already know and learn new ones. The children had a brilliant and fun day doing many different activities all about spelling! Well done Year 2.
Today was our Whole School Geography Day. The theme was 'Let's Make a Difference'. We were thinking about how we could help the planet. Year 1 learned about the 'Food Journey'. We looked at how far food has to travel to get to the UK from other countries and what types of waste this caused.
What a great hook day Year 5 had last week, learning all about 'The Egyptians'. Food was tried and mummies made out of toilet rolls!! Lots of fun was had and new things learned too!
Oakwood sent 24 children from years 2,4 and 6 to Fairisle Junior School this morning to take part in the Lordshill and Federation Sports Day.
The children compete against other children, of the same age, from other Federation Schools in a range of different sporting events. The children did Oakwood proud and competed with determination and thoroughly enjoyed their morning.
Year R were really lucky today to have a scientist visit us. Rachael Shuttleworth is a geologist and taught us all about global warming and its effects.
We were really surprised to learn how much CO2 is warming up our Earth, but really pleased to know that there are things we can do to help our planet.
We did an experiment using hot lamps to heat up bottles of CO2 and air to see which one got the hottest. CO2 was definitely the hottest and this is like the sun warming up Earth.
We are going to make sure from now on that we turn lights off, walk instead of take the car and try and recycle our rubbish instead of creating litter!
We had a great time testing and experimenting to see what happens when we mix vinegar and bicarb together! We were very surprised to see how they reacted! We tried it with water instead of vinegar and nothing happened!
Year 4 have had a fantastic week exploring science. Today, we had a visitor from Southampton Uni who is a Brain Scientist. She told us all about the brain - we found out lots of exciting new facts from her.
We have also been learning about digestion, including doing some exciting experiments with cola and bread!
Year 5 have had a wonderful day with Teresa and her team from Southampton City Mission (SCM) learning all about 'God'. Where we can look for him? and What represents God?
Have a look at the photos below.
The children have unanimously voted surfing as their favourite activity of the week so far and most want to go again! We have also completed the low ropes/assault course or climbing and abseiling as well as canoe drill training and problem solving/team activities.
It's our busiest day of the week tomorrow with canoe lake in the morning and coastal walk in the afternoon and disco in the evening so we need our sleep tonight!
It's been a day of changeable weather in North Devon today. We've had our fair amount of sunshine, as well as some light showers and plenty of cloud but nothing has been able to dampen the spirit and adventurous attitude of our children. Lots of children have done something they said they wouldn't be able to do or giving something a go that they were scared of and they have loved every minute of it!
Today started with crabbing at Appledore quay and a rib ride up the estuary (as well as an ice cream) before the walk back to Knapp. After a brief rest for lunch it was tree hoist, Jacobs ladder and tree traverse or crate stacking and tunneling. Dinner was Jacket potato, chilli (veg and meat), salad and veg. The evening activity was pedal carts which we shared with our new friends from Fryern School!
Lights have been out for a while and there are lots of tired children already asleep, but there are still a few night owls enjoying sharing a room with their friends!
The weather hasn't been great down here, but no rain yet - just a little windy! But we have managed to pack a lot into the first day. Depending on which group children are in they have either completed the Assault/low ropes course and Ringos or Climbing and abseil tower and ringos.
Dinner was pasta bolognese, Ratatouille or something else I can't remember just now with chips, veg, salad and dessert.
The children are starting to think about bed now but the site is alive with the sound of first night away from home delight (shouting and laughing).
We try and get pictures from as many people as possible, but sorry if we don't get your child each day. Rest assured though, everyone has had a great day and is looking forward to tomorrow.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who planned, prepared, helped, came along, spent money, had a burger or an ice cream, played a game, had a flutter on a raffle, picked a tombola ticket, sang, danced, won a coconut, golfed, kicked a goal, nerfed a target, had their nails or face painted, designed a mask, had a cuppa and a cake, climbed or jumped over obstacles, or, in Ms Patchett's case, got gunged!
The OSA Summer Fete was a massive success and a lovely community event - a wonderful day for the Oakwood Family!
Team Oakwood went to the Outdoor Sports Centre on Tuesday to take part in the annual City Athletics Championships. 20 schools competed in the all day event, with some of the best athletes in the City competing.
Team Oakwood performed well and picked up some excellent results. The boys team picked up 15 points -enough for 9th place. Whilst the girls team earned 30 points (just 2 points shy of coming 2nd) for 4th place.
A combined Team Oakwood 45 points was enough for 6th place! Another solid performance at the City Athletics against some much bigger Southampton schools.
Well done to all our competitors but special mentions to our new City Champions - Edward, Sunny-Rose and Praise.
Last week all of Oakwood took part in Arts Week- exploring architecture around the world. We all got to try out lots of different mediums including clay, collage, drawing and painting; as well as learning about different buildings around the world. Have a look at what we created!
Willow class visited Testwood Lakes Today. They had a great time learning about different animals and plants. They even had a go at pond dipping. They won a Silver award for the Waste Free Lunch Competition. They only had 9.4g of waste per person. The children represented Oakwood very well and the staff at Testwood said they were amazing!
Today Year 5 and Year 6 were lucky enough to have an astrodome experience in our hall, from The University of Southampton. Each class had a 45 minute show and learnt lots about our solar system.
Thanks again to the university for providing us with the excellent opportunity.
Y6 have been hard at work on their Make 5 Grow enterprise project.
They worked hard on their business plans, pitched for their investment and have placed and received their first orders of goods. This mean that from tomorrow (Wednesday 6th June 2018) they will be open for business.
The 13 small businesses will be selling a wide variety of products at lunchtime and after school for the next 4 weeks on selected days.
Children are invited to bring in any pocket money to buy products. Happy Shopping!
The children in Year 2 have been learning about Snails and can tell you many interesting facts! Such as they travel at the top speed of 45 meters per hour!
Having collected a few it was decided that we should have a "snail race"!
This week Maple Class walked to library. Some children became members and chose books for the first time while other children changed their library books and took out new books.
We had a lovely afternoon. Thank you to the parents and grandparents who walked with us.
We have been very impressed with the selection of home learning projects that the children have done this term. The children could choose from a "Pick and Mix" and they have had the opportunity to share what they did with their friends in class.
