All the children of Willow class should be very proud of themselves for performing such a brilliant assembly yesterday morning.
This term the children have been learning all about Africa and were excited to show their friends and family all that they have learned.
First of all the children entertained their audience by acting out an African fable which highlighted the importance of sharing. The assembly also included a traditional African song, a video of the class's virtual African adventure and readings of letters that the children had written.
Thank you to parents and friends for coming to watch this performance.

Year 3 have been looking at the Easter Story and reflecting on the suffering of Jesus. We thought not only about the physical suffering but also the emotional suffering. We also reflected on what suffering meant to us and how we are affected by suffering. We decided to try to show the emotional turmoil suffering entails and the suffering of Jesus on the cross in a piece of abstract art. Take a look:-
In preparation for our new topic next term we have been reading James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The children created art work by collaging a peach, sketching James and using water colours to show Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. Come and look at our role play area where their art work will be displayed.

Year 6 children have had a tough Spring term. They have been exceptionally busy, working hard on their English and Maths. They have even completed their Mock SATs week with a smile. So this week, as well as finishing off some bits of work, they have been taking it a bit easier.
They have completed in the Southampton Sumdog maths competition, had an extra PE lesson with Mr Crook from TMC and even tried their hands (or brains) at Sodukus.
It has been less than a week since the Oakwood Tag-Rugby team were crowned City Champions and they have already been outdone!
The school Hockey team, today after school, were also crowned City Champions.
The A team were top of the table going into the final two fixtures and ensured they finished with a perfect record, beating the Oakwood B team 4-0 and Springhill B team 5-0.
The B team were in 3rd place before today's matches, an even though they lost both games, 4-0 to the Oakwood A team, and 1-0 to Springhill A, we think they still managed to finish the league in 3rd place.
A big well done to all 15 players. And a special thank you to Mr Martin who came as our extra adult on the minibus each week.

As part of our topic, Year 1 have explored different fruits. First of all, the children had a tasting session where they discussed how tropical fruits tasted, what they looked like and how they smelt.
After this, in groups the children designed their very own smoothie choosing which ingredients to include.
Working as a group, the children chopped and prepared the food before putting it into a blender. They then tasted and evaluated their smoothies.

This half term, Year 1 have been comparing their local area with Kenya in Africa. They have made comparisons between the different countries including the houses, animals, food, schools, climate and seasons.
The children were very excited when they had the opportunity to go on a virtual African adventure to immerse themselves in African culture. They had the chance to find different animals through their binoculars on safari, hear the various noises that the animals make, see a traditional African dance and even play some African drums.
Once they had returned, the children wrote letters to friends and family telling them all about their amazing adventure.

This term Year 1 have explored their local area with a walk around Sandpiper Road.
The children made observations about the environment as part of their Geography work and took note of what they saw. They found out what material the houses are made from, the type of houses around our school and the plants and flowers that are growing near by.
We were very lucky with the weather, as it was a beautiful Spring day.
Thank you to our Year 1 mums who came with us on our walk.

This week we have been learning about Easter and spring time, and what it means to us. Today the children in year 2 enjoyed a lovely afternoon decorating a cake with a bumblebee laying on some grass with flowers, with the help of a parent who is a professional baker.
They were shown how to decorate cakes with buttercream, chocolate and icing to create different spring themed cakes.
Thank you to Josh's mum and Jane who came in and delivered a fun, tasty lesson!

In Year R we have learned that Easter is about new life and new beginnings so we decided to get baking and make some yummy Easter egg nests.
We hope they were as delicious as they looked and smelt.
This week we have been colouring, cutting, sticking, finger-painting and even problem-solving to get ready for Easter! We found some mysterious rhyming clues and managed to solve them, finding a basket of Easter eggs as our reward! We have also been busy in the kitchen baking some delicious Easter nests as a special treat to take home and enjoy. Happy Easter everyone!

It was the school football team who capped of a fantastic week of school sport by, again, beating Fairisle Junior School in the Schools' football league.
The weather was much better than the horrendous conditions the reverse fixture was played in and it made for much more entertaining football. Oakwood looked in control for the majority of the game and deserved their 5-2 win.
Scorers; Reece (3), Levi (1) and Robbie (1)

Over the last couple of years Oakwood have been very successful at the School Games Tag Rugby competition, reaching the final in each year. This year the team managed to go a step further and after a tense final against Fairisle Junior School, were crowned City champions.
Oakwood took a little while to get warmed up during the first game, with the score level at 3 tries each at half time. However it was all one way traffic from there as Oakwood cruised to a 9-4 victory. The rest of the groups games turned out to be just as high scoring, Oakwood twice touching down ten tries against opponents.
Oakwood faced last years winners Bassett Green in the Semi-final and after a brilliant second half defensive performance managed to come out on top.
The final saw Oakwood take on local (friendly) rivals Fairisle Junior School. It was a game of excellent Tag Rugby, but it was Oakwood who triumphed - winning 7-5.
Player of the tournament and Oakwood's top scorer was, the rocket propelled, Robbie.
Well done Team Oakwood.

On Tuesday, Team Oakwood travelled to Redbridge for week 3 of the school's hockey league. Oakwood have two teams taking part in the competition and both have been doing well - but how did they get on this week? And how did the B team do under the temporary management of Mr. McPhillamy?

Oakwood you did yourself proud. Well done!
It's been a busy 2 days for those of us at Oakthorne. Yesterday after doing some artwork, we made pizzas and brownies (delicious!) which we ate later in our movie time. Today we had a more action packed time at Woodmill doing archery and low ropes. What a great 2 days. Take a look at some of the fun we had:-
As part of our Science, Year 4 have been thinking about the environmental and human impact on habitats. Following in the footsteps of Marwell Zoo, we made our own rhinos out of clay and painted them with vibrant colours and patterns, in order to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino. We are in good company as Prince William is also currently campaigning to save the rhino.

Last week two children from Oakwood qualified and competed for Team Southampton at the Hampshire cross country championships.
Following consistent race finishes in the Southampton cross country races, both children were asked to join Team Southampton at the regional event.
The race took place on Tuesday afternoon at Gang warily in the New Forest. Ethan finished the boys race in 66th and Amy the girls race in 49th. The standard of runners was exceptionally high, with only the best of the best competing, so well done to both on this great achievement.
We are all very proud of your achievements.
The girls team finished 7th overall and the boys finished 4th.

What a fantastic day! The year 5 and 6 sports leaders did a fantastic job of planning and organising the day for all key stage 1 children to enjoy. The theme focused on the Olympics, so the children practised their athletics skills and were challenged by the sports leaders.
Well done to everyone who took part in personal best day. We're already looking forward to the next one...

Last week, children in Year 3 made their own watches with the minutes clearly marked, so that they could have a close look - at any time that they liked!
Today Year 3 performed their second concert, and really have raised the bar. They controlled their notes, their timing and also played at the same time as other instruments. I'm sure parents are already looking forward to the Summer concert at Central Hall!
Today the children shared their homework all about sea explorers, which links to our topic 'Beyond the sea'. The children worked really hard to research an explorer and present the information in any way they liked. There were amazing posters, leaflets and booklets as well as, a fish tank full of pictures and writing with a submarine that floated to the bottom of the tank! Come to year two to have a closer look at their homework.

After the disappointment of last weeks football match against Tanners Brook, the school football team were eager to beat Holy Family Primary School - who had turned out to be a very strong team in our match earlier this season.
Oakwood were quick to put their front foot forward, and actually had the ball in the Holy Family net before they had even touched the ball! Passing the ball around directly from kick off, Oakwood moved down the pitch and scored with their first shot of the game. It turned in to a half that Oakwood dominated and only some last minute goal line clearances stopped Team Oakwood chalking up more than the two they had by half time.
During the second half Oakwood were finally tested but they could always rely on Ollie in goal to clean up any defences errors. Oakwood scored two more goals in the second half meaning a final score of 4-0 with was thoroughly deserved.
Man of the match Ethan. Scorers Reece (3) and Ethan (1)

We have loved exploring the caterpillars, locusts and tadpoles (which, thanks to our Zoo Lab visit, we know are not minibeasts) that are visiting our classroom. We have been using magnifying glasses to look closely at them and have been chatting about what we can see. We have really enjoyed looking at non-fiction books in our book corner and are learning about some of the features they have.
The two school hockey teams took part in week two of their schools' hockey league in the miserable weather on Tuesday afternoon.
The 'B' team were on pitch first, taking on Bitterne. It was a close game; as the two evenly matched teams neutralised each others attacking threat early on. But Oakwood did finally make the breakthrough - Sam sweeping the ball into the net. It stayed 1-0 for the rest of game, but it did take a goal line clearance from Paolo in the dying seconds to ensure Oakwood 'B' made it 2 wins out of 2.
Team 'A' were on second and also took on Bitterne, however they played Bitterne's 'Blades' team. Oakwood started brightly and controlled the game throughout. Taking the early lead with a breakaway goal for Jola after good work through the middle of the pitch by Reece. Oakwood continued to improve as the game went on, scoring 7 times in total. Daniel (3), Jola (2), Rhys (1) and an own goal.
Well done to players of the week Daniel and Paolo.
Both teams still have a number of games to play so will endeavour to play them over the next two weeks.
Keep it up Team Oakwood!

All the children of Cedar Class should be very proud of themselves for performing in their class assembly this afternoon.
The children entertained their audience by acting out the story of Handa's Surprise. Some read riddles about different fruits which had been written in class, while others described the fruits they had tasted. They all describe where they lived in the world and spoke confidently and clearly.
To end the performance the children sang a song about the seven continents with actions!
Thank you to parents and friends for watching and for practising lines with your children.

Year 4 spent a chilly day at Testwood Lakes looking at the course and journey of the River Blackwater and Test, playing a game of Pooh sticks and a fun activity to demonstrate the water cycle. Finally, we used classification sheets to discover the different creatures found during pond dipping.

Year R have been busy learning all about different minibeasts and this afternoon they were really lucky to be visited by Zoolab.
All the children had the opportunity to hold some not so mini minibeasts and learned exactly what made a minibeast. (No bones, in case you weren't sure).
To prove that this was correct, the children also got to hold a snake, which can sometimes be mistaken for one.
Can you name the minibeasts in the photos?

Wednesday was Sport 4 All day in KS2 this week.
As it is currently the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament, our sports activity for all our pupils was Tag Rugby! Jim, from Milbrook rugby club, visited and gave each class a very muddy tag rugby session.
The children practised skills such as catching and throwing the rugby ball with proper form; movement games; and some small sided touch rugby games.
Every child enjoyed their session, even if they did get a little wet and muddy!!

It is an eggciting time in Year 4 today, as we were greeted this morning by the arrival of four chicks in the incubator. Currently two more eggs are pipping, so we hope to have some more arrivals by the end of the day. Keep watching the blog for a chick update.
