Oakwood Advent Books 2019: 1st December - The Snowman

This year, at Oakwood, we will once again be having an Advent of books in the countdown to Christmas. Each day at school we will be sharing a Christmas/Winter themed book (or part of a longer book) with all of our children. On Saturday and Sunday we will also be sharing books via video here on our blog and through our Twitter feed.

As well as providing the children with an exciting opportunity to share a book everyday with their teachers and friends, they will help children reflect on a wide range of themes that affect people all over the world during the Christmas holidays.

We will let you know each day what the day's book is and hope that you join in at home to share the joy of reading.

Today's book has no words but is one every adult will be familiar with... The Snowman by Raymond Briggs.

Y6 Music Soundscapes

Year 6 have been working hard in their music lessons to compose a piece of music in groups that they think represents 'the sounds of the factory'. They were shown pictures of various pieces of machinery and had to create a journey of sound around the different machines using repetition and pattern.

They are still building their pieces, but here's a couple of them so far.

Y6 Visit Milestones

Y6 recently visited Milestones Museum to visit their 'Life during the Victorian Times' streets.

The children explored the various types of businesses that might have been found in towns and cities across the country. During a workshop they explored the geography needed for certain industries and how the railways and rivers helped Britain boom during the Industrial Revolution.

During their second workshop, children were taught by their 'Board School' teacher in a range of subjects. She also emphasised the social expectations of children.

Year's inky art!

Inspired by the Illustrations in The Green Ship, Year 4 had a go at creating their own watercolour and ink illustrations.

Y6 Victorian Day

Year 6 children stepped back in time today as they experienced a day in a Victorian school (well most of it).

The children went through the daily routine of inspections and health checks; the 3 Rs - Reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic; Drill, playground games and they even had a go at using ink and pen during a calligraphy lessons.

The children's costumes were great and certainly looked the part! But could they keep a straight face? Could they follow instructions without talking? Would they make a mistake and find out how a Victorian teacher sorted out behaviour in their classroom.

First few days of school in YR

Our new Reception children have just completed their first two weeks of school. They have enjoyed their mornings and lunch times.

They have settled in really well, adapted to our routines, made new friends and have had lots of exciting experiences exploring through play and having fun.

Have a look at what we have done so far!

Oakwood Groundforce Day

On Wednesday we were joined by volunteers from the Ordnance Survey and some willing parent helpers to dig, cut, chop, pull, push, heave, jump away from frogs, sweat and generally work every muscle they have to prepare some of our outdoor areas for the start of something new. We are so thankful to each and everyone of them, without their hard work we would not be where we are now.

Over the next few months classes will develop their areas, spend the money we raised from our Move'athon and our donation from The Barker Mills Foundation. There may even be another Groundforce day! Ask your child about their area for more information.

Showcase at Oakwood

We were lucky enough to have Alex and his team from Showcase perform live for Key Stage 2 in assembly this week. What a fun, entertaining and inspirational start to our morning! Thank you Showcase!

Year 3 Morph Inspired Animations

Science in Year R

Last week Year R had a very sciency week.

We learned about how water can change things, using skittles and felt tip pens to see how the colours change and mix.

We then used our detective skills to go under the sea and work out which colour scales would be best for the rainbow fish to have deep in the ocean, as well as investigating prisms and coloured plastic to see what happens when the light shined through them.

Outside we made predictions about capacity and recorded our results and worked out what happened when we added pressure to the water inside the containers. We may have got ourselves a little bit wet in the process!

Finally, we had a visitor at the end of our week to kick off our final 'Watery World' topic. We learned about the turtles and how to feed them. The We loved observing them throughout the day.

Transfer Day for 3LM

I am so excited to be back full time with my own class. I will miss teaching every class in the school,  but you can't beat having your own class.

This is how the new 3LM (for 2018-2019) spent their arty transfer day. Making 'Lolly Dollies' to tell their worries, hopes and dreams to; creating Positive Pants to remind us to be positive - You can do it! - These have gone home today.

We also created wonderful self-portraits in the style of Romero Britto - a Neo Pop Brazilian artist who uses vivid colour to portray, hopes, dreams and happiness.

Here is a snap shot of those that were completed.

I can't wait to see what the class and I can achieve next academic year!

Knapp House: Day 1

The journey down to Knapp House couldn’t have been better: no traffic and not too warm. Once the children had settled into their rooms and had a tour of the site, they jumped straight into the activities. Depending on their groups, the children completed either crate stack and tunnelling or tree hoist and tree traverse for their afternoon activity. After the evening meal (Pasta Bolognese, hot dogs, ratatouille, salad and chips) all of Oakwood’s groups made the short walk down to Appledore Quay for a spot of crab fishing and RIB rides.

It’s been a long day but the children have had a great start to their week. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

Y1 Litter awareness

As part of the plastic free day year 1 decided to research the causes and effects of littering. We learnt lots about sorting recycling, reducing our waste, re-using things instead of throwing them away, air pollution and garden waste care. We made videos in our groups to help promote awareness for this serious issue.

Plastic Free Day

You will see from some of our other recent blog posts, that Oakwood had a great 'Plastic Free Day' this week.

All children got involved with learning about single-use plastic and its effect on our environment. Key Stage 2 were lucky enough to have a visit from a group from King's Church who told us all about their ecobricking project, Year 6 did a local community litter pick and two of our Pupil Councillors were lucky enough to have a slot on local breakfast radio!

Across the school children also completed their own pledges to reduce plastic, wrote letters and emails to local companies to ask them to reduce their plastic use, they found inventive ways to re-use plastic in school, to name but a few!

Have a look at Year 3's top tips for reducing plastic:

Top Tips for families to reduce plastic use!

These are some of the ways our class have thought of to reduce our plastic usage and help the environment.
1. When you buy an ice-cream, ask for a cone instead of a cup as you get given a plastic spoon too – too much plastic!
2. Ditch single-use plastic items
3. Always take your litter home, wherever you are!
4. Re-think your birthday bag! Ditch the rubbish plastic toys you only use once. Include just a cake or something home-made.
5. Take a cloth bag/re-usable bag to the shops.
6. Always use paper straws instead of plastic straws.
7. Use re-usable tubs in a lunchbox not food wrapped in plastic.
8. Use metal cutlery.
9. Drink from a re-usable bottle at school and when you’re out.

Please think about using these tips at home. These tips will help our planet!

Y6 Go Plastic Picking

This afternoon, Y6 (and a few parents) picked up their pickers and refuse sacks before heading out into our local community. The groups divided the Sandpiper road loop and all the closes and paths up and spent an hour and a half plastic (any other waste) picking.

In 90 minutes they collected a staggering amount of plastic, glass and metal waste. There were audible gasps on the playground at the end of the day when parents saw just how much rubbish had been collected from our local community. The biggest offenders were: plastic sweet and chocolate wrappers; alcohol bottles and cans; and drinks bottles. A shopping trolley, a tyre and a bicycle were also found!

It's great to know that the bags and bags of litter are no longer a danger to the wildlife and our local community but Y6 were sad to see the amount of litter people had left in the area they live.

BBC Radio Solent Interview

We were invited to join Julian Clegg on his breakfast radio show at BBC Radio Solent today. Oakwood were represented by two members of our Pupil Council who spoke brilliantly about the Plastic Free Day and how we can reduce our use of plastic! Have a listen!

Year 3 Groundforce Project Phase 1-Ideas and Meeting Mr Barrett.

As part of the whole school Groundforce project to get everyone involved in improving the outside environment, Year 3 have been given the responsibility of improving the walled areas outside of their classrooms. To get our project off the ground Year 3 met together to come up with some initial ideas. We talked about safety, budget and what could be achieved realistically.  We then invited Mr Barrett to meet our school councillors to discuss our ideas. Mr Barrett was very excited and extremely helpful and suggested a few ideas of his own. The next phase is to write to Mr Taylor for advice on our plans and details on safe paints and resources we can purchase.

Take a look at our initial ideas:-

Year 2 Flower Drawings

This week, Year 2 were looking closely at flowers following our topic 'The Secret Garden'. They looked at a number of different flowers and drew their own observational drawings of them.

5FL have worked very hard as a team to write, perform and film a poem all about why play matters to them. They looked at a wide variety poems to inspire them, studied how to perform poetry (thank you Michael Rosen!) and worked together to film their scenes. We think it has turned out great!

Fabulous Friday at Minstead!

We rounded off a fantastic week by using our map reading skills to find hidden clues around the Minstead site. Our little sleuths did a fantastic job of uncovering the answers to the treasure hunt. After  the brain workout, the children exercised their voices merrily singing their way way around the Minstead Maze. At the end of the morning, all the children earned their final and most important bead - gold, awarded for team work. What a fantastic couple of days the children have had!

Wet welly fun at Minstead on Thursday!

The children had a wonderfully wet day at Minstead on Thursday. They learned all about caring for Minstead's animal residents and how to create a sustainable farming future for our planet. They also explored rivers by studying maps and creating their own. The children tested how waterproof their wellies were by conducting some scientific recording in Minstead's river itself!

We finished the day off by telling stories and sharing jokes in the roundhouse by the campfire. A brilliant day!

Elm Class sharing poems with 3LD

This morning Elm Class took their dragon poems to read to 3LD. It was great to see so many children sharing their writing with pride. A huge thank you to 3LD for being fantastic partners, listening carefully and giving very positive feedback.

Writing in Y6

A small group of Y6 children have been busy after school as part of a writing group. They have produced some fantastic pieces of work which we would like to share with you!

Scooter training in Year 2

Year 2 were lucky enough to have some expert advice about keeping safe while riding a scooter.

They were given top tips about emergency stops and had the opportunity to practise them.

Thank you to Jenny Babey our Bike it Officer, the children had a fantastic time.

Elm Class Catapults

Elm class have been very busy working in teams to build catapults out of lolly sticks and elastic bands. Their next task as a team was to build a castle out of straws and plasticine. It was rally tricky but they didn't give up! The final task was to invade another team's castle using their catapult. Take a look at the video to see how we got on.... watch out for low flying counters!

Year 6 go high tech

Year 6 have gone high-tech in their revision during the last few weeks. They have used Crumble coding to create their own interactive quiz game. They have programmed a question selection system and written piles of testing questions to quiz their friends.

Elm Class Clay Coat of Arms

Year 2 have been working with clay to make their very own coat of arms. They had to think about how to decorate it, choosing things that mean a lot to them. We had lots of different ideas from football to computers, basketball to family.

Take a look at the finished coat of arms that were created.

Oakstead goes to Marwell

Yesterday, the children of Oakstead paid a visit to Marwell Zoo to meet the different animals there and learn about their different habitats.
